Minsk Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 You've got Gobern and Mellis the wrong way around, and I can't believe you have missed out our secret weapon - Anthony Pulis! Seriously though, as I posted on another thread, yes that squad should be more than capable in this league. I also think they are starting to find their feet and that our performances are becoming better with each game. I also think (hope) AP may well bring in a loan player next week (RW/FWD with some pace). If I was forced into making a prediction right now I would say that we won't be far off of mid-table come Christmas, and could well push on from there in the new year, but I don't think we will quite make the play-offs. SO16_Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 it IS a good squad - but they're not clicking currently - and that's the key thing. Now the window is closed, everyone can concentrate on working together for the next 5 months and get this club climbing the league. Most teams would take our squad tbh, so lets get them working as a team!

Smirking_Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 They need to gel and lose what is a losing mentality at the moment, i think the experience will begin to kick in soon, IMO, we owe someone a damn good kicking, which will hopefully kick start a winning run. For me though i still feel we lack a bit of creation, one of the big reasons our strikers (who are probably better than this level) are not scoring shedloads. (EDIT ; yes and even McLaggon, too ) 2) unless I'm mistaken..?...we can still take loan players after next week and a few managers are going to be looking closer at their squads and wage costs so we might still get some more in ..... PLUS... 3) ANY player still " out of contract " - even after next weekend, can sign for ANY club, at ANY time. Of course you don't know which of the " golden oldies ", or " walking wounded " might still be available... but just how good do you have to be to play in L1 ? Decent squad on paper, some just need to get back on track. Or he'll go out on loan. I hate to sound like a scratched record but I'd be more than surprised if we didn't see some coming's and going's in the 'emergency loan window' so this 'post deadline day squad' is not necessarily the same one that will take us through to the January window. Have to agree. I think Saga will ask to be loaned out rather than compete in the squad. If this come true then I reckon Pards will need a winger and two strikers on loan, unless he can pick up any decent freebies who haven't got a club. Loans are always risky, as we saw last season, but I don't think there are many other choices at this stage.

West End Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 I am happy with our squad we look solid at the back with Jahdi coming in & Saga & Lambert should be a handfull for anyone in this league if we can get a pacey striker in & some width on loan we will be sorted. Kelvin Thomas Jahdi Trottman Harding James Spiderman Hammond Lallana Saga Lambert That would be my starting 11 I know James has played well centre mid but he is a good crosser of the ball & we need to supply amo for Lambert I would bring Murty back in as soon as he is fit but this team should get us up this league. I am glad the transfer window is shut we can now focus on getting points on the board & get some team ethic try to keep changes to a minimum & get some results. We also have good options on the bench Holmes Mellis Patterson we have a good squad it is time for them to deliver I think AP has done well in the transfer market lets have it UTS
brightspark Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Considering each player becomes worse when they pull on a red and white shirt, we should have a pretty average team for League One. Hopefully we'll stay up!!!
Rebel Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Still missing a proper right back as Murty at 34 will probably spend more time injured than on the pitch also a right winger as Melis is a bit too young just like last seasons squad and real pace upfront

Alanh Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Anyway - -------------Davis-------------- Thomas--Trottman--Jaidi---Harding Saga----Hammond---James---Mills ------------Lallana------------- ------------Lambert------------- subs - bart, perry, morgan, patterson, mellis, holmes, wotton good team, IMO. I pretty much agree with the idea of playing Lallana off the front man. He's going to be an enigma and like MLT I think we are only going to see the best from him if we build the team around him. The alternative is to play him in central mid alongside Hammond as he will retain the ball and always be available to take a pass while leaving the tackling to Hammond. I have no idea why you have put Saga on the right wing though given that he's an out and out striker. I'd rather see James out there as he's got a decent cross and can cover at full back if Murty or Thomas gets stranded upfield.
Toadhall Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 My front two would be Lambert and Lallana (playing slightly deeper). saintant Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Have always thought Lallana is in the mould of Peter Beardsley. He is not quick but can take his man on with trickery, has a good eye for a pass and with practice I think his shooting will improve. In my book he should only ever be used just off the front man as a lnk between midfield and attack. He is not a midfielder or a wide man and I don't believe we are getting the best out of him by not playing him in a role he is suited to. A good player being wasted. polegategavin Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 I firmly believe that 1 or 2 players that AP was attempting to sign yesterday, will still arrive in the coming weeks via a loan deal, with an option to purchase them at the end of the loan spell. One of them will be a right winger IMHO and another will be a striker, as I think Saga will leave on loan to a CCC as well.

Tom28 Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Kelvin Thomas (Murty) Jaidi Trotman Harding James Lallana Hammond Mills or Holmes Saga Lambert Lallana is too good in possession to play out wide - he needs to be playing down the middle, pulling the strings. James on the right and Milles or Holmes on the left gives natural width. Yes we lack pace still but I'd rather go for quality and strength, than pace, especially in this league. Trouble with that is Lambert........he has stated he is not a 'in the box' type of striker, and tends to score more often, from outside the box. I was not ITK however, just have felt with Pardew that he has identified what was needed and has been working hard since day one to sort it out. I still believe we will sign another striker/ winger in the loan to permanent method, and that Saga will leave on loan, but would be delighted to see Saga stay. Rebel Posted 3 September, 2009 Share Posted 3 September, 2009 (edited) I think Waigo will be played as a striker in the long run and Gradel will come in to fill the right winger position - with Saga leaving! I see there is no Saga on Saturday as he is away with the Polish squad - a good reason to get rid of him on loan to a CCC side as he will miss a number of games this season for that reason! Looks like Lallana may well play off Lambert on Saturday then - that's if Waigo doesn't get cleared to play before then!
