Luton - FA Cup Build-up

Thought I might as well start a thread off. As usual this one on paper should be a sure-fire Saints win, however if there's a team that could cause an upset, I think its Luton as they have some decent players. Craddock is a forward in form and they have a decent QPR striker on loan who is doing the business too. They have nothing to lose with this, so I cannot see them coming here to shut up shop in the first half certainly.

As normal with Saints, if we can keep a clean sheet to half-time, they should start to tire earlier and we'll come away with it. If they score early it could prove to be another slog to get back into the game.

Prediction : Saints 2 - Luton 1.

COYS!

If we go into the match with expectations of an easy victory then I suspect that we will be turned over. I'd settle for any sort of win and certainly don't want a replay. On second thoughts, I've never been to Kenilworth Road.

I assure you that you don't want to!

i have, you haven't missed much, they put us in a cage and a policeperson of the gentle sex hit me with her truncheon.I knew I shouldn't have asked her what she did with it;););););) Still 8 pints of JC Mild always brings out the curiosity in me.

They dont rate the stadium.Lol and are expecting a lot of paying on the gate. Could be lively as I believe the club have misread their fan base for these one off games.

To be fair, Nick PBH has it spot on really

Plus, all Four of their fans posted, so they must be really excited:D

Guys, we have 7 games in January. We have to play the fringe players tomorrow, of all days. If we lose, so be it. FA Cup is not top priority this year. JPT and the league out-rank the FA Cup!

Davis

Argent Trotman Martin Molyneaux

Wotton (DM)

Gobern (wide right) Holmes (wide left)

McLaggon (AM)

Saganowski Paterson

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Kelvin needs gave to achieves match fitness and compete for the gloves.

Sam Argent, each time I see him the reserves, impresses me. He's a dedicated RB and we need one of those to fill in for Murty, freeing up Lloydy for midfield. Trotters may as well play for us (if allowed). Aaron Martin deserves to get a game.

Gobern and Holmes deserve to get a game, too. Wotton is right for this - a bit of steel among the young players.

Saga - last chance scenario - play to get a contract somewhere.

They have 7 days from Luton until the next league game. If professionals can't manage that then they should retire. Play the best XI.

I think its best that AP picks the team. This selection would lose, absolutely no doubt, and then we would have the disgrace of going out to a non-league team (albeit one that should never be non-league).

Saga will not play, he is leaving, Davis is not match fit, and anyway better to keep Bart in goal to keep his confidence up, Davis will be backup if anything happens to him. Trotman won't be allowed to play, if he hasn't already gone. Molyneux is not good enough.

Don't care what anyone says we should play the strongest team available, the only one I would leave out of the starting line up would be Connolly, but havehim on the bench. Anyone who thinks we should just throw away the FA Cup game against non-league opposition clearly has no udnerstanding of the meaning of the Cup to not only real supporters but also to the players and management. So there are 7 games in January - we employ professional players who are capable of playing twice a week, and anyway with the transfer window open tomorrow its not like we would be stuck if someone got injured - that would be more of a concern in February.

You're right. Furthermore it doesn't do anything for the "winning attitude" to go and lose winnable games. I hope that the time when we kept losing against substandard opposition with our management team coming up with ready made excuses have been forever consigned to history. It's only playing to win that matters.

True story: went with a friend to see Luton v Plymouth about 4 or 5 seasons ago - it ended 1-1 and their number 1 goalkeeper at the time, Larrieu (sp?), was recovering from injury and ended up sitting next to us - and on the way in I asked a female police officer if there was a bin anywhere for my pastie wrapper. She replied "take your pick mate, this whole place is a bin". "Not a fan of Luton I take it?" I replied cheekily. "Put it this way" she said, "I put in a transfer request a year ago, when the waiting time for a transfer out of this dump of a town was about 5 years. That's how much we love it!"

I recall Saints first season down in the Championship, Luton away, probably first match. I think they'd just got promoted. Saints were up at half time (I think 0-2 but not certain) and that ridiculous "Easy" chant. They came out and hammered us second half and won the match. Different time, different circumstances but nonetheless a cautionary reminder of the dangers of underestimating teams.

Another reason for playing our strongest team; it was reported there were words in the dressing room after Colchester. I suggest giving as many as possible of those that played against Colchester the opportunity to put right what went wrong in that defeat.

Bigger picture; it's the third round of the FA Cup, the best round of the competition. Is there no romance left in football? Let's not devalue it by playing a weakened side.

Anyone who thinks we should play the reserves in this game needs to read AP's article on the OS:

http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~1920178,00.html

Some "fans" may not realise the significance of the FA Cup but fortunately our manager and players, and now our owners as well have a proper perspective on the positives that come out of a good cup run and will be fielding a strong team in order to make progress in the competition.

Well done AP.

This is what I would expect:

-------------Bialkowski-------------

James---- Thomas—Perry------Harding

---------------Wotton-----------------------

Waigo---Schneiderlin---Hammond---Lallana

--------------------Lambert---------------------

Subs - Davis, Lancashire, Mills, Gobern, Paterson plus 2 others!!!

I am assuming Jaidi injured and Antonio loan period completed. If both available they will start in place of Thomas and Waigo who will be the other two subs.

I hope AP has managed to show Marcus and Nicola a DVD/video of the 1976 cup final and the reception for the Saints when they returned home with the cup!

AP said he was looking to extend Antonio's loan to the end of the season and as he has already played for us in the FA cup, there shouldn't be any problem playing him tomorrow.

His contract with Reading is up at the end of the season. If I was Reading I would be saying, you want him you pay a small transfer fee and sign him on a permanent deal.

I remember that. I hate that 'Easy' chant, and also hate the 'We're playing just like Brazil'. Invariably they inspire the opposition to our immediate cost.

We should only sing them when WE are being hammered. Will do us more good!.

lol

First year in Ch'ship was riddled with "Easy" chants that came back to haunt us by the end of the game....

The Leeds 3-4 being just about the most humiliating.

We lost that game 3-2, after being 2-1 up at halt time. Kevin Nicholls[playing saturday],

ran the show, and Dean Morgan chipped Niemi in the last minute for a deserved and brilliant winner.

I think Luton's winner was actually from Enoch Showumni. I was right behind it as it thundered into the top corner late in the game. The Oak Road away end just has to be the worst stand in English football. In fact the whole ground takes your breath away, it's so run down. I also sat amongst the home fans when we drew 1-1 there in the FA Cup in the early 90s, Shipperley scoring our goal, before humping them 6-0 in the replay. Took great delight in that as my mum's side of the family are all Hatters fans. Looking forward to another rout tomorrow although I think it will be dicey.

Play the strongest team possible, we want to continue progressing on three fronts, and it seems that AP agrees judging by his comments.

As already said, we've got a free week until the next game (which is at home, so no real travelling), and then another free week until the relatively short journey to Millwall. It's the second half of January that gets a bit more hectic.

For the moment I'd hope that some of the players may be able to gain some confidence from beating Luton and playing well.
