Saint J 77 Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Its good to here we are still in the market for new players. I laughed at this bit... "We do need a couple more, obviously we have lost Frazer which was a massive blow, and we almost lost Ant (Pulis) tonight, but his shoulder went back in - but two dislocations in pre-season isn't good." why did his shoulder go back in ok and not Frazers. Also, surely Pardew isn't thinking of using Pulis for the first team?

Saint J 77 Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Sorry I meant its good to hear... Also I noticed we had a trialist called McGlashan in the team. Anyone know who he is? I guess he is a potential young prospect, not one for the first team just yet?
Saint J 77 Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Because no two injuries are exactly the same. I understand that. I really just meant why could it not have been the other way around. I can't see Pulis being a player that will have much of an imapct on our season but Frazer hopefully will. Do you think Pardew is hinting that Pulis has a part to play now then? maybe he has seen something about his attitude he likes.

Kingsbridge Saint Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Good stuff from AP. Happy with what he has and will add players as and when in the near/medium term. This gives us great consistency and no months of 'gelling'. And the word 'baffled' appears nowhere.

If Pardew thought Pulis had a part to play in the first team, he (Pulis) would surely have been in Switzerland, not playing Saints XI friendlies with the kids. Also, notice the praise that Pardew has for other players in that team - his only mention of Pulis is his shoulder!

doggface Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Agree with Alpine on the CM comment, we have hammond, MS and errrrr Wotton! What if MS & DH are crocked? should they be assured of their place (NO) Puncheon looks ineffective in CM & Butterfield a stop gap. TBH I think AP knows this anyway and is just being cute- I would still expect 3 more players at least.

corky morris Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Sensible. We do have a great starting 11, but as he says we need to add some wingers, pace & another striking option. We look lots better when Morgan is in the side than without him, but reading between the lines I think he has a player(s) in mind & is waiting for the clubs to get replacements or get desperate for the cash. I still think its a waiting game with Antonio who will IMHO join us just before the window closes as Reading will need the cash!

Good point - yep, if AP announces from the rooftops that we desperately need a box-to-box midfielder then the price for anyone we've got earmarked or are already talking to will skyrocket. So, yep, the less it's mentioned the more likely it is to happen. In theory...
Rebel Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 I think we'll know a lot more about where we need to strengthen when the first team play against Sutton on Satyurday. We do need to step pre-season up a bit though! Although we have a great first 11 - at the moment we don't really have any strength in depth - and not that many options that can change our play off the bench. Antonio and Waigo gave us that strength in depth going forward and options off the bench. We need to replace them both if nothing else.

The only problem with it, is why then announce that we are looking for another forward ? Wont that do something to his transfer value ? The more I think about it, the more his comment about not knowing how to play the team looks the bigger concern. He is right, we have a top-notch first XI for this level, but if you dont know what to do with them..... I think you are making more of that comment than necessary. To me AP is saying that there is tactical work to be done to fine tune the team based on his comment in the paragraph below the advert and based on the fact that the pre season focus so far has been all about fitness. Also, obviously he knows how to set up the team as he did so successfully for three quarters of last season so the fundamentals are there already. I don't really think he means he doesn't know what to do with them, more just that we haven't seen that finished side yet, it's been a lot of chopping and changing as they make sure everybody gets a run out. But against Sutton we will see his first choice side.

John B Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 (edited) in a friendly...??? Well I thought Friendly matches were used to try out the way we were going to play in the coming season. I think Farnborough will do quite well this season might follow them from a far (ten miles ) but have not logged on to their Forum to see what Alpine Borough has to say By the way I think the Southampton way is a bit of Cortese Clap Trap so it was just a sarcastic post Edited 22 July, 2010 by John B

The only other option I see is maybe Wotton in the holding role as a three with Puncheon, Lallana or Chamberlain in the role Mellis played briefly to good effect before he went away with England. I can see another loan deal filling this back up CM slot. Maybe even Mellis again. if we are going to buy a CM then Sameda from Charlton for me.
