Thedelldays Posted 13 August, 2010 Share Posted 13 August, 2010 I think we all agree that Markus will be (rightly) remembered as a saints legend.... yeah yeah, the word legend gets thrown around too much..but in a short space of time...he has earnt it... for me...my saints legends list now reads... Ted Bates Lawrie Mac Matt Le Tissier (the greatest) and now..Markus Liebherr... who would he join in your legends list..?

Andy_Porter Posted 13 August, 2010 Share Posted 13 August, 2010 Isn't this meant to be a serious thread? Maybe not legend status but Ken Monkou and Chris Marsden are two players I remember fondly growing up. Jason Dodd, Maraian Pahars and Franny Benali for me. Mainly Benali for me, he really represented everything that was so good about Southampton at the time, shame we didn't managed to replace the Benali and Dodd's with equally with people who cared as much. I agree about Benali - not one of the most gifted (that said, I never thought he was *THAT* bad!) but whenever a relegation scrap came about, you could rely on the llikes of him, Dodd etc - every single time. SNSUN Posted 13 August, 2010 Share Posted 13 August, 2010 (edited) Not a patch on Duncan Spedding... You jest, but I got bored of one of the old CM's once, and decided to spruce up his stats with the editor. He went on to become the best right back in the world, and quite possible the greatest footballer ever to have graced the game. :-) In that he won us our only major piece of silverware, I would class Bobby Stokes as a local legend. But the OP is right, it is a term that gets banded around too much. In 100 years time, when people read through Saints history, the name Rupert Lowe will probably feature more than any others... whizzpop Posted 13 August, 2010 Share Posted 13 August, 2010 On a serious note legends for me Niemi, M Svenson Dodd Benali Le Tiss Beattie Pahars Marsden
SaintBobby Posted 14 August, 2010 Share Posted 14 August, 2010 The "legend" tag is getting devalued IMHO. It's almost as if a player of the season award is enough now. Ive been supporting Saints since 1980 and would say its only really MLT who gets legend status. Lots of other great players and lots of characters Ive loved, and historically, I'd say Bates, Paine and Channon qualify too. So they named the suites at SMS about right. Bobby Stokes obviously has a huge importance in our history, but not really legend status despite the 76 win.
Arizona Posted 14 August, 2010 Share Posted 14 August, 2010 On a serious note legends for me Niemi, M Svenson Dodd Benali Le Tiss Beattie Pahars Marsden I wouldn't have Niemi or Killer in there. They were both pretty good, but neither was really at the club that long and there weren't too many special moments. Niemi had his triple save against Arsenal, but neither really came close to the likes of Le Tiss or Pahars when it comes to special moments. For me Pahars, Benali, Le Tiss and Beattie are the only 'legends since about 1990.

benjii Posted 14 August, 2010 Share Posted 14 August, 2010 Legends since I started going to matches (89/90) are LeTiss and Liebherr. That's it. Nearly legends are Dodd and Franny. That's it.
Robsk II Posted 14 August, 2010 Share Posted 14 August, 2010 Agreed, pretty much. Franny deserves a mention, and Dodd, and I think both would be on the bench, as it were. Pahars might squeeze in there in a funy kind of way, too.
