Lallana - shock horror

Another "Let's try and rattle the Saints' applecart" article from the Echo.

When did they appoint a Skate as Editor in chief or is he still carrying sour grapes from losing his war with NC?

get over it FFS

Over-reacting much?

They are reporting on some transfer speculation surrounding one of our players. Big deal.

Seems like a reasonable article to me.

Most Saints fans will I'm sure take it with a pinch of salt and I can't see anything wrong with a local paper re-reporting news and/or speculation from a national paper.

Look at it another way......There is a train of thought that says the more speculation there is the better, because (a) it will inflate the 'bid price' and (b) it is likely to strengthen Cortese's resolve to keep hold of him (if indeed he wants to)

3m to Brum? It's laughable. They'll be Brum fans thinking it's real, some saying 'who', and others saying he's not good enough. In reality, I can't see him going there, if he leaves it'll be somewhere bigger, and a lot more money. Maybe we'd take silly money. Delph went for £8m and wasn't a goalscorer at all, and that wasn't long ago at all.

He's easily good enough for it, potential to be far better than Hleb IMO, who takes their creative role now. Still, get promoted and I'm sure he'll stay.

Why is it laughable that Brum should get him? They have absolutely shed loads of cash, so if (and its a big if) they did want him they would be able to afford him and more than make an attractive pay offer. I agree though that if we get promotion then he'll hopefully stay for the ride.

Umm not sure - he can leave for tribunal (close to nothing) at the end of the season if he does not renew his contract. We must surely have offered him a new one - so by no means certain he will sign a new one. In that case (i.e. if he refuses to sign a new contract) 3M from anyone would not be sniffed at?

Absolutely correct, if we don't offer him a big new deal and CCC football he'll be off anyway and 3m for the remaining 6 months of his contract is a very fair amount.

  • 2 weeks later...
I would rather lose him for nothing at the end of the season with a chance he will resign for us if NPC football is achieved, rather than selling him for a paultry 3mil at the mid point of our promotion charge.

We won't lose him for nothing; we will be entitled to a development fee for him, which will be decided by tribunal according to his actual worth. Take Dan Sturridge as an example, who left Man City for Chelsea when hos contract expired. Chelsea will have to pay £3.5M up front, £0.5M for every 10, 20, 30 and 40 appearances, and £1M if he makes an international appearance. So a total of £6.5M. The tribunal system these days is much fairer than it used to be. If he does go, there's every reason we'll get a very good amount for him.

Hmm - how much did we pay for Mr Lambert? 3m will buy a few players good enough to have a positive impact on the team we have now.

We tend to wear 'pound' tinted glasses when we look at our own players. Lallana can not be compared to the likes of Bale, Wilcott etc - they were premier League players albeit young.

I think we absolutely can compare him to the likes of Bale and Walcott. Lallana, with a bit of training and guidance (just like GB and TW needed) will be a quality Premier League player.

With the right manager I think he'll play for England one day, but from a selfish point of view I hope he delays that ambition until he gets into the Prem with us!

sorry Lallana is a good player, but to compare him with TW and GB is going a bit too far, both those two were considered two of the hottest youth prospects in world football when they left us and their sale prices reflected that. Bale is probably the best player in his position in the PL at the moment and is younger than adam. I suspect Lallana would not (apart from Blackpool) make any PL team at the moment, although technically gifted, he lacks the necessary pace to be a very top player. £3m or a player who has only ever proved himself at L1 seems like good business to me

We are all deluded... Who was the last player signed from a L1 team who commanded a fee anywhere near 3m? Answers on a postcard please to youmustbejoking@inyourdreams.com ... DD is right - chalk and cheese.

Fabien Delph, Leeds to Villa... 8 million

Don't have a postcard to hand, but...

2010 Jonjo Shelvey rising to £5m Charlton to Liverpool

2009 Fabian Delph rising to £8m Leeds to Aston Villa

But anyway, i really can never ever see adam playing for England, he is a top top player at this level but there is just no way that i can see him ever playing at that level.

Also to compare him to Bale and Walcott who i believe are younger than him and have already established themselves at the top level and have already graced the national game i think we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves here.

Personally i wouldn't accept a 3mil bid for him, but mainly because we are stable and promotion will yield more for us than the 3mil sale of our best player. Also as Kraken said, we will probably be better off waiting for a better fee from a tribunal and personally i would rather take a chance on him signing on at the end of the season then cashing in at January.

Bale was nowhere near being one of the hottest prospects in world football when we sold him. He was a decent young Championship left back with Man U and Spurs interested, who possibly, with the right guidance, was capable of being a consistent player for a top half Prem side. Very few people would have imagined him at the level he's got to - even knowing how good he was for us it's rare for a player to beat Champions League winning defenders the same way they beat CCC defenders. And don't forget that he was lacking in confidence and injured for Spurs for 18 months, which some young players never recover from.

And as if to prove that you can't judge a player's development, Walcott of course *was* a hotly-touted prospect with a huge future, and hasn't yet moved beyond that. Just like Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen were the "future of football" in 1994 and 1998 respectively, and never got any better than they were in their first 3 or 4 seasons.

If I remember rightly Tottenham paid five million plus potentially another five in appearances. That is highly rated for a full back

I very much disagree with your assessment of Bale. In our first team at 16, a regular and one of our most influential players (from ful back) at just 17. My memory of it is that most people had him destined for a top four club within a few years. During his intial spell with Spuds I always maintained he would come good, though seeing him playing on the wing is a surprise, and a testament to his talent.

Also, to say Walcott hasn't progressed is a bit daft. He's gone on to establish himself at club level for a top 4 side, and at international level where he has scored a hat-trick against decent opposition. He's still frustrating and a bit raw, but he's definitely moved well on from the player he was with us.

I agree Kraken, sorry the9, normally your pretty spot on, but Walcott and Bale have had their plaudits and rightly so.

That is not what he says. He loves it here, wants to play every week and feels that is best with Saints at present.

so he is going nowhere in january (personally I never doubted that), but what about in the summer? Does him staying depend on promotion?
