Guard of honour?

I doubt any Brighton fan could name 10 clubs out of the thousands of teams that have been promoted (or crowned Champions of a top league) in the last 120 years of world association football that have received a guard of honour. It is a relatively recent phenomenon and Saints are under no obligation to do it.

Not so recent - Bradford City gave Saints a guard of honour when we won the Third Division back in 1959. Bradford had nothing to play for though and could afford such demonstrations of pleasantness...

Just do it take the morale high ground were a massive club compared to them just look at their new stadium it just shows the level of ambition to only build 22000 seats

So as said above give them a guard of honour onto the pitch then let them drag themselves off it after 90 minutes of footballing class from the mighty saints :)

Some real hysterics here about whether or not the team will be forming a Guard of Honour for Brighton on Saturday?

http://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?199528-Southampton-to-not-form-a-guard-of-honour

Apparently Adkins posts on twitter too - lol

I'm amazed at how much they hate us. I don't get it, we are miles from Brighton and I've always thought of them as a nice little club.

It's like the Bournemouth thing all over again, they are obsessed bless em.

The cr*p coming out of Bournemouth and Brighton this season has been amazing!

Bournemouth really do have a chip on their shoulder about being the small club down the road that we used to lend players too and play friendlies against - but I think its mostly because half of the people in Bournemouth support Saints just like Adam Lallana and his family. They really don't like being a second club - which they were for a lot of our fans until this season!

Brighton I don't get at all - I think a lot of its to do with hating Alan Pardew for his Palace connections and then the rumpus over the summer about Calderon supposedly been offered a better contract by Saints. Something which was not even true according to Cortese and was spouted out by Poyet! Its Calderon they should have an issue with not us!

They also seem to forget they came to St Mary's earlier this season playing for a draw from the very first minute - not something to be proud of even if you've won the title. They left a bad taste in the mouth just like Billy Davies Derby County - but you had to admire both teams for their professionalism! If Saints had a little bit more of that street smart attitude - and maybe kept a bit of managerial stability - I think we'd still be fighting them for the title this season rather than trailing behind them in second place! Or first loser as some like to say!

Guard of honour?? Jesus Christ, they've won a few games of football, not returned from a tour of Helmand Province.

And people say the modern game is disappearing up it's own arse...

Nothing new in this, Blackpool formed a guard of honour and applauded us onto the pitch after we had reached the cupfinal in1976 (our first home game after the SF).

I'm all for it - I really think it will play right into our hands TBH - reverse psychology and all that. We can clap them out onto the pitch as Champions and then beat them.

Ditto. Personally I think Brighton deserve it given their achievement, whilst it may leave a bitter taste to accept this by Adkins or whoever. Our response seems a bit churlish to be honest.

Did we not give them a Guard of Honour at the last game at the Dell, after they had won the 1st Division Championship?

Got a feeling we did. They certainly ran out parading their trophy.

Has anyone ever? I dont think anyone cared about it back then..! I know I didnt!

Frankly I couldnt care less about a guard of honour, they just want something else to moan at us about

I think we should give them a guard of honour, individual certificates with their names on, freedom of the city of Southampton, MBEs, some book tokens, all of our Tesco Clubcard points and a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. They have achieved a mighty feat after all.

And a years subscription to Arsebandit Weekly for each member of the Brighton squad.

Personally I think we should give them a guard of honour, they have had a decent season and have deserved to win the league.

It would be nice however if afterwards we smash them 3-4 nil (probably won't happen but you never know with saints).

I have no hatred of Brighton, in fact I am quietly chuffed they have been promoted, they will be insignificant again soon enough.

Not the clubcard points surely!

They'll want my house next!

I appreciate that it was a long time ago, but I seem to remember that they did! Still can't get too worked up about whether or not we do tomorrow though.

Agree but yours is far too sensible and balaced view to gain momentum on here or amongst fans in general.

We can give them a guard of honour off the pitch at the end if we win.

Shouldn't make any difference to them, right? They want recognition for doing something a team does every year in every league in the ****ing world? Why should the team in 2nd place (3rd tonight) still fighting for promotion have to line up and kiss their arses? It makes no sense in a competitive league. It's just one more thing for their obsessed fanbase to fixate on. I really hope we beat them just to shut them the **** up.

I've learnt this season that, along with P*mpey, Bournemouth and Brighton consider us their biggest rivals. This has parallels to a survey (see below) carried a few years ago where clubs like Rotherham and Barnsley considered Sheff Wed their biggest rivals; Bolton considered Man Utd their biggest rivals etc. I see it as a compliment, so let's enjoy it.
