Son of Bob Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 (edited) Yes, I know it's been done a hundred times but it's alway a good close season thread. The rules are simply that you pick your all-time favourite starting XI BUT they must be players you have actually been to see playing live for Saints. TV/internet/DVD's etc do not count. You must have actually been sat in the stands watching them play in a Southampton shirt! Same rule applies for the Manager. You can choose the formation to suit. I'll get the ball rolling; I'd go for a 4-3-3 as follows; GK: Antti Niemi LB: Gareth Bale CB: Michael Svensson CB: Mark Wright RB: Ivan Golac RM: Danny Wallace CM: Adam Lallana LM: David Armstrong ST: Matt LeTissier ST: Mick Channon ST: Alan Shearer Manager: Lawrie McMenemy Adam Lallana is probably my only really controversial choice as I am aware that we've had better central midfielders. I just feel he's been an outstanding player for us in the last few seasons and we'd had been truly lost without him! An SFC legend in the making... I hope. revolution saint Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 Can't argue too much with that but I'd have Jimmy Case in there instead of Lallana, who could then fight it out with Armstrong.
Wadge Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 I am only picking mine from the players I have actually seen perform regularly. GK Niemi RB Jeff Kenna CB Dean Richards CB Michael Svensson LB Gareth Bale LW Rod Wallace CM Jimmy Case RW Danny Wallace ST Le Tissier ST Pahars ST Lambert Manager - Chris Nicoll Chariman - Nicola Cortese Not the most defensice looking side, but hey ho. I know Lambert hasn't played a high level, but think he would work a dream with those other players, plus he has scored loads for us.

I had Jimmy Case there to start with but Lallana just swung it. His importance to us in the last 2 seasons was the influencing factor.
ManorHouseSaint Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 Very similar to others, as expected. As good as Lallana is, I still wouldn't have him ahead of either Rod Wallace (my favourite player when I was a kid) or Ekelund. GK - Niemi RB - Dodd CB - M. benjii Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 I had to go for Monkou, hear ages and always playing when I started going, loved him. Richards was better, but not here as long. If Fonte stays and play for us in the Premier League, he could become a big favourite. I remember Monkou being awesome in some games but a liability in others. At his best he was tremendous but he doesn't have the consistency that Svennson or Richards or Fonte (albeit in a lower division) have shown. I might be wrong though, as it was a while ago! I chose Ruddock because he scored the first Saints goal I saw live!

Colinjb Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 (edited) A team of favourites. Not necessarily the best of players but favourites that I have seen play. It'll have to be an odd formation but here we go: GK: Niemi LB: Bridge RB: Ostlund CB: Fonte CB: Svensson M: Marsden M: Prutton M: Oakley F: Le Tissier F: Pahars F: Beattie Subs: GK: Davis D: Bale D: Dodd M: Chaplow M: Oxlade-Chamberlain S: Lambert S: Crouch Manager: Alan Pardew. (When we were at our best under him it was such a joy to watch.) So tricky, there was no room for Adam Lallana, Henri Camara, Paul Jones, Djamel Belmadi or Andrei Kanchelskis.... Tartarus112 Posted 14 June, 2011 Share Posted 14 June, 2011 Davis James - hated on here but I think that warmed me to him and I've never particularly liked any of our other RB's. For keeping going even when everyone got on his back. Fonte - Best I've ever seen play for saints Davies - close second on that count Bridge - Over Bale because he never reached his potential with us and for generally hating John Terry. Something that puts him in any of my teams Lallana - best player i've ever seen play for saints. has the ability to change games. Viafara - For the writing on the shirt in the play off semi final away. Also quality player and sorely missed still Schneiderlin - More talent and class than any other proper CM who i've seen play for saints. Danced around Blackpool and to a certain extent united too this season. Walcott - Quality down to earth lad. Hard not to like Guly - for his quick feet and general incompotence at staying upright Paterson - Fellow scot and never seemed to get his chance despite hints of talent. Gutted when he was sold as part of Barnard deal. Jan poortvielt - Just liked his style of football. In the end we were always doomed due to financial difficulties but at least I liked watching us play under his guidance
