solentsport: #Saintsfc boss Nigel Adkins would not be drawn on whether Gaston Ramirez or Matt Phillips would be arriving soon. Will put audio up in a bit

Nigel Adkins on Ramirez signing 'It looks exciting. It shows the ambition of the club. We have come a hell of a long way.' #saintsfc

They're in the same press conference right?

Well he's 21, was apparently wanted by Inter, Tottenham and Liverpool, has been described as the "Uruguayan Kaka", has nine caps for a national team that is ranked fourth in the world and scored eight goals in 28 games for Bologna in Serie A last season.

As summaries go, that's one of the better ones we've ever had.

Turkish's point is the clincher though.

Perhaps we should start describing our whole team this way:

The Argentinian Joe Hart; The English Maicon; The Dutch Tony Adams; The Portuguese David Luiz; The Scottish(!?) Roberto Carlos... etc...

The only reason Ramirez will be travelling to Saints is for a medical and a signing. Bologna would not give the go a head to travel without things being agreed, that's how it always works. Liverpool have that agreement and could step in but that's looking doubtful until they move on Andy Carrol.

If this goes ahead it marks a very major change in direction for Saints in many areas. Cortese has been reluctant to go for the big salaried players so far, but I imagine baning your head against the wall in chasing quality has had it's toll and on agents fees as well. I get the feeling Alan Carrs accountant has arranged his tax, hence the net figure being described. Smart move by Saints if that's the case. We end up with a two tier wage structure but a lot of sense in that to get the quality for that odd player who can make all the difference.

On the playing side and with the interest still in Phillips it looks like this is the guy we want to supply the bullets. It does fit in especially when you consider the interest in the Dutch play maker. Still with further required from the defence but this is the signing that could make all the difference.

He looked pretty crap in the Olympics. Very lightweight but I guess he must have something in him for Liverpool to go after him.

Since when did Liverpool showing an interest in (or signing) someone provide any guarantee of quality.

I'm sure Poortaloo described BWP and Holmes as the English Torres and Robben.

Don't want to rain on the parade but according to some Italian Saints on the List, the owner of Bologna has just been interviewed on Italian TV and said the two clubs are some way apart in agreeing a fee. They are asking for 20m up front (Euros) and we have only offered 15m spread over 3 years. Also he is angry with Ramirez for some of his comments and is considering fining him.

Joked "seems like he'll be on a few bob" "must be good to be getting that much"

Then went into standard evasive quotes about ambition, working hard behind scenes, do it the right way etc etc.

Suggests it's NC telling Adkins he's having him, rather him going to NC and saying he wants him. Doubt Nigel is complaining though given the quality of the player involved...

My favourite bit..

"And another point while I'm at it, we were underdogs. We were extreme underdogs. Southampton on the other hand are coming back into the league with a bigger fanbase than us, a bigger stadium, a bigger club reputation, a respected academy, a better promoted squad than we had. It will be easier for them to get players in than it was for us and it beggars belief if you can't see that."

Im confused where we are with this now. Perhaps we havent totally agreed with Bologna but pretty much have with Ramirez.

Maybe some face saving going on with the Italians.

We didn't want to accept the money but Gaston made his mind up...

Sums it up really - Only time managers complain about board room signings is when they are chheap shiedt - if quality deals are done the only really insecure old school managers would be complaining - its the way its done on the continent all the time.

he could fine him €5m, that would make up the difference,

This seems to be this year's instalment of Cortese's present to the manager, Papa Waigo, Guly and now Ramirez.
