So, hang on. Nobody could've done any better with the players he had but he's left a legacy of squad building that Saints must maintain? What. The. Actual. Fuck? This is what happens when you let ChatGPT write your clickbait articles.

https://saintsmarching.com/russell-martin-makes-controversial-claim-which-is-partially-correct

In hindsight, Southampton's Martin appointment was a masterstroke move considering the youth focused approach the club implements. Though the end could've been much better instead of a ton of Premier League humiliations, Martin has left a legacy in terms of squad building and talent scouting which the Saints must strive to keep intact.

Having you seen the other articles by Mehdi Gokal the writer of that one?  👀🤣

The fact they've both landed decent roles tells me within the game their time here was not seen to damage them, interesting perspective,

Probably fair considering the quality of players they had to play with.

A few quotes:

on Max Johnston article

Admit it or not, but all Southampton fans have been chuckling since yesterday knowing Will Still's contacts that may help them sign keeper Matt Ryan. Or in fact, overall, for the plethora of brilliant additions Still can bring to Southampton, by using his previous ties.

On Archer article

And with the season over, the 23-year-old has every right to be angry at Southampton for getting rid of Martin. A coach and by far, the only one at St. Mary's who gradually helped the former to bridge the learning curve in the English top flight.

Latest article.

Leeds United emerge as surprise favourites to sign Southampton's keeping target Yahia Fofana.

Not to sound harsh, but Southampton has endured one of the worst starts in this summer transfer window. And surprisingly, while their efforts have by far failed to convince the fans positively, fortune hasn't been on their side either.

He only every wanted the Rangers job. He's never been first choice for any role he's ever had. His whole career has been based on proving people wrong. Good to see he's walked through the door with the victim mentality he left with.

One of the Rangers board said "there's a lot to be proud of in Southampton's Premiership season"

Martin "my teams run more than any other - we do more sprints than anyone we play against"

Martin "wherever I've been the supporters have been behind me because of the relationships I've forged"

Martin "it's about courage and intensity and being able to express themselves in the final third"

Martin "Nobody ever talked about my style of play until I got to the Premier League. I don't want to talk about style of play"

He is at a very high risk of getting stabbed if he goes out at night 😅

I wonder if precious little Flynn will be joining him north of the border. Certainly more suited to his level.

They couldn't afford him. He cost us £18m under a year ago, no need to make a big loss on him and even after relegation wage drops his wages would be big for Rangers.

Plus he is very good at the level we are playing next season.

Needless to say he's already pissed off the fans by appointing someone who isn't rated by them, has been at the heart of their problems, but who is a proper good lad!

I was impressed with the writer of that. I thought the hyperventilation was sure to make him pass out after a couple of paragraphs. But they kept going to describe the sky falling down. 🙂

Will be a must visit after his first press conference following a loss.

Brand Martin will be forever on point, as the blue half of Glasgow goes nuts around him. It's his pathway to his next job, and has worked well for him so far.

Tavernier’s been there donkey’s years and Martin actually played alongside him during his short playing stint at Rangers so they probably know each other fairly well.

Just put a post after at the same time. He's for sale for £40m as he doesn't feature in Pep's Grand Plan apparently. Rangers bound perhaps? 2 idiots together, if so.

What planet are you on that Rangers are spending £40m on any player, let alone Jack Grealish.

Rangers highest ever fee of all time is £12m. And that was 20 odd years ago.

Rangers need a few players and have a TOTAL budget of £20m if what was said in the press conference by their DOF is correct and assuming they don't sell many to free up and gain a bit more money.  As this has been bandied about a bit and it's well known finances in Scotland are lower than here and Rangers got taken over partly because they kept losing money, and, and, and ... I wonder if what an appropriately-scathing response is to someone who just hasn't a clue. Celtic are by far the richest club and what figures do they regularly spend? That thought might be a starting point.

I'm now off to see if MLG is somewhere around writing similar comments and to think if I'll give him some credit for not always just blindly shooting from the hip.

I'm not sure. I hope I don't start obsessing about the answer. 🙂

Rangers's new owners have not unveiled a warchest for purchases. There may be a bit more than they've said, and they are coyly trying to keep prices sane. However, not only do they need an expensive overhaul, but their thoughts are never far from their neighbours. Celtic have had a decent run with recruitment. Rangers tried to get Ross Wilson to help replicate it, and it didn't work. Now Celtic can shop in a slightly better store, which has it's own challenges. Rangers are playing catch up again, still needing hits from nearly everyone they bring in.

Downes would appear to well out of their range, both in fee and wages, no matter how much they get on. Smallbone is a more realistic option, as he worked very well under Russ, but one that would still make a dent in their resources.

Perhaps Russ is more interesting than the absolute nothing that is going on with us at the moment?

As far as I'm aware he's still boning Pinder so there is still a connection of sorts.

Yeah can we just lock this thread please? Anything that needs to be discussed in relation to him will fit into another thread now whether it be the transfer window thread or the defectors thread.

Better squad than Leeds? Are you fucking mental? Leeds had a far better team than anyone in the League, they just had a shit manager.

We fairly easily beat them every time we played them.

Their wingers were better than ours, but weaker everywhere else imo.

We would have challenged for the title without Martin imo. Horrendous manger.

I can see some posts regarding how he sets up at Rangers and how that works for him on a number of levels. Comparing and contrasting with what we got here. This would seem to be the place for that, considering the previous discussions.

Just my tuppence.

They sold Gray and Rutter for a combined £80m, but you'd prefer Will Smallbone and Che Adams. Fair enough.
