No prizes for guessing that the goal they conceded was due to the keeper attempting to play out from the back in a dangerous situation. Amusing to see a spate of fan comments along the lines of "at least we're getting those kind of mistakes out of our system before the season starts".... *Chortle* Edited July 19 by trousers 1 17

But my personal view is that they may well sack RM by Xmas if he’s not started well! They are not a project or a potential team - they are RANGERS and Rangers fans are not Saints fans… The level of opposition and the quality of their squad vs the rest means he’s got a similar situation to when he took Saints up in his hands. He should do ok given enough time - but in this case though it’s certain Rangers fans will only want the title-runners up won’t do- so if they drop cheap points early doors and lose a derby his job is in jeopardy. I’d make him favourite for first sacking in Scotland myself. Edited July 19 by gio1saints 2

How many times did we hear about random fans he bumped into walking around the area telling him that they fully supported his philosophy and understood what he was doing. I’m sure it’s a coincidence that it was SAF’s first visit to their training ground, rather than it being out of huge support for Russell Martin. Pretty cool for Russ though to have some conversations with a manager that achieved it all. 1
Dusic Posted July 20 Posted July 20 Why do people get so triggered by Russell Martin? He was clearly responding to a question about Ferguson visiting and pretty much nothing he said as quoted by the BBC is remotely boastful or controversial! 7

He’s going large and getting the Glasgow PR in early this season.
washsaint Posted July 20 Posted July 20 What a bunch of miserable sods there are on here. Still analyzing every word Martin says and trying to poke holes. He gave us a memorable season in the Championship (and let's not forget the absolute mess he inherited) and was way out of his depth in the Premiership but left a long tme ago. Time to move on methinks. 10

It's posts like this that really get me excited for this season. 3rd top scorers in the league, club record unbeaten run and a 4th place finish followed by a play off win all in spite of this prick means this season can only be really special right? 1 2

Don't disagree with you on this - but, as with most things in life, look forward to what's to come as opposed to dwelling on the past. The past can't be changed, the future can
Midfield_General Posted July 22 Posted July 22 (edited) Massive first game for Martin tonight. CL qualifier, first leg, at home. Will be watching with interest to see if he's learned from his experiences and adapted anything. This comment from one of their boards made me smile: derbybear said: Haven’t a clue what to expect. Just hope we don’t hear “ We need more game time” You won't. The days of bluffing and excuses are gone. Russell Martin is a straight shooter and it's clear he wants not only to be the man at Rangers but to embrace the pressure and expectation. Come what may he's not going to waste time with junk talk. 😬 Edited July 22 by Midfield_General 6
franniesTache Posted July 22 Posted July 22 (edited) I can't wait for Martin to do a powerpoint presentation to a room full of angry Glaswegians to explain to them why what they're watching is wrong and that his style is world changing and innovative and they couldn't possibly understand it, after they lose their third game on the trot by a goal caused by them dicking about with it at the back Edited July 22 by franniesTache 2 4

Midfield_General Posted July 22 Posted July 22 They've brought some players in since he's been there but no-one of any real note. A few weeks ago they genuinely seemed to think they might come in for Ramsdale and Downes. Since then the highest-profile player they've brought in is Joe Rothwell, and they seem properly excited about him, which really does say it all about the difference between expectation and reality up there. The team they look like they're putting out tonight looks very, very average on paper. A bunch of £500k - £3m journeymen and loans brought in from the fringes of Luton Town and Peterborough. It's going to be fun watching them try to Beckenbauer their way out from the back with Champion's League qualification on the line. 4

Lee On Solent Saint Posted July 22 Posted July 22 He's getting his excuses in early. Not calling the game season defining.
beatlesaint Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Rangers started the game well in terms of keeping the ball and looking composed. But they didn't really create or fashion anything in those first eight minutes. In the last five minutes Panathinaikos have had a good few looks at Rangers' goal and look far more of a threat.

Saint NL Posted July 22 Posted July 22 I just saw the score, knew I had to rush over here to see the comments. Loads of possession and no XG. Somethings just don't change.
Midfield_General Posted July 22 Posted July 22 (edited) HT. 0-0. On another day they would be at least 2-0 down - Butland made two fantastic saves to keep them in it. They've been second to everything and overrun in midfield every time Pana come forward. They are a mess defending corners and have only had one shot on target. This is against a side most of their fans were expecting them to comfortably roll over. Fans already asking why they play it sideways when there is a forward pass on, and seem puzzled that the high-energy, aggressive, attacking football and high press they've been expecting is nowhere to be seen. Already questioning why players are being played out of position, why the full backs are so narrow and inverted, and whether this style of play will work against packed defences in the SPL. To be fair to them, 22nd July is very early in the window to be having a tough competitive fixture, and I'm sure the team they start the season with will look quite different to the side they've got out tonight. It's also somehow still 0-0, so it's not beyond the realms that they could nick something. But it's not a very good start. Edited July 22 by Midfield_General
ChrisPY Posted July 22 Posted July 22 347-145 at Half Time. Got to be pleased with that score. Up The Gers 🇬🇧
Saint NL Posted July 22 Posted July 22 "Rangers aren't doing enough in open play. I think Martin will be considering changes at half-time or early in the second half." 65th minute as always, eh Russ?
coalman Posted July 22 Posted July 22 When Martin said this game wasn't going to define his season he may have been a bit optimistic. Saying that I'm sure they'll come good in the second half.
Fabrice29 Posted July 22 Posted July 22 I see all the people who insist they don't like Martin or his football are checking in on how he's doing Perfectly normal behaviour. Not the only ex Saint out there though so maybe they are all checking in on the Panathinaikos lad. 2 1
