He did indeed get us promoted, and did give us that record. 

Just letting that sentence stand by itself. As you say, it's been a disaster since. And there were plenty of counter points, even during the promotion and getting that record.

I also enjoyed his system when it worked. Against certain opposition, playing a certain way. And if he has certain players, able to play within his structure, but also pushing against it enough to make their individual talent make a difference. And those players really have to be the best in their league.

He'd been at Rangers. He knew what to expect from the fans. But you can see why he went. Their new investment would allow him to shape a squad into his system. It was a budget well above anyone else's. He could have the best players in the league. Rangers wanted his system to get progress in Europe. It's a good fit there.

What he wasn't prepared for was: that his budget was needed for a whole squad; plenty of teams set up just to counter old firm opposition, happy to give him possession; competitions underway while they were still bringing players in.

Those early European games gave a glimpse. A resetting approach to every move, allowing a team to counter better opposition. Until Brugges who, like all the PL teams we faced under him, showed that there were limits to what his squads could cope against. When it falls apart, there's no other options.

Leicester are going to the administration wall. Needing to get out of their division and getting a deluded new owner willing to pick up their debt and obligations. Martin may have some good players left. But it's disjointed, based on who they can move on. In there, he's trying to put in his plans to a squad and fanbase who want to see anything else.

We had a wretched September under him. Before that, when the likes of JWP were leaving, I thought we'd be fine. We got points, even if it wasn't the best. September was his system kicking in. October onwards was him having to adjust. Something he's going to have to learn yet again.

He's not so much vilified as he's a parody figure in charge of important parts of people's lives: their clubs. His approach of rather losing to progress his project isn't a good fit for any club.

Oxford 4 now. If there is an example of someone stealing a living it must surely be Russell Martin. He 'manages' a club almost into oblivion, gets the push and a few £m in the back pocket for his trouble then rinse and repeat.

Wouldn’t put it past SR to re-appoint him once the FA do Solak’s job for him. SR are just as dopey as Rudkin and do.

I'm disappointed we don't win,because we deserved to. It was
the best performance we've had. The only thing we're missing is 5 goals and if we scored 5 , I think everyone goes away thinking it's an amazingperformance.

Well, having Alex McCarthy in goal certainly won't have helped. But, Russell Martin is the one who took him there.

Fair play in many ways to them and their agents in many ways for being able to blag it. 

It’s as if there aren’t newspapers or internet, and club boards have never come across their reputations and injury records.

Got taken there by Russ, went straight into the team as no. 1, was shit, got dropped, got put back in for today due to an injury and shipped four at home to fucking Oxford

He dresses and speaks well, has had a modicum of success and a 'philosophy' so can impress people who are easily impressed.

Indeed. In every industry you get people whose main/only skill is their ability to bullshit convincingly in order to secure employment before being rapidly found out and sacked. Russel Martin is one such individual.

Why do some posters tell other posters they shouldn't be interested in a subject and they should move on.

There's an outside argument that this thread shouldn't be in the Saints section anymore, but I love reading about Lego Head's F-Ups, and will keep doing so until he stops providing the material.

I'd better watch one of their games while I have the chance.

The possession stat is there. But what is it that the players are letting Russ down on? Are they still at the lots of passes, but no transition stage? Is the scar tissue, preventing them from being brave enough to embrace the system?

Do they now lack the individuals capable of making the basics work - Baz keeper, Downes picking it up from defence, Smallbone as versatile link-up player, AA able to cleverly get goals from wide, or be on the end of cut backs? 

After us, and Rangers, I was thinking he'd be able to get a spine of of players with those attributes. Just as a starter. Both Rangers and Leicester have required overhauls. Perhaps that's left him without that spine, where he was fortunate to have it still there with us.

Part of his pitch is to transform a team, with automations. But he still needs other attributes in there. It's one of the disconnects from his pitch (getting the best out of what's there) to reality (getting in players who capable of building on his approach)

As they they look out at their 5 star hotel and training complex, they have to buy in to being more a hard working  Martin's MK Dons, than fallen PL super stars.

17th with a single win. The deliverable will be promotion. Let's see if the board back him. They will be there for a while at the price they've asked for the club. But when that promotion becomes impossible, experts were saying that administration, at least, is imminent. Everyone there will be well aware of that.

For three of them, got caught playing too high a line. They've not learned that racing back is a focused thing, to block and push players where Martin wants them. Instead, the full backs allow balls in for relatively easy finishes, against centre halves who are not keeping pace with the attack.

The fourth had plenty of defenders around it. None of them forced a decision, allowing Oxford to pass through them and score. 

What we've seen before. Players working on part of a system, leave massive gaps, because they can't/won't do the rest.

And that can be the coaching too. Poor Holgate was under orders on what to do, making his appearances a horror show. He'd have angered Russ, hoofing it, but wouldn't have conceded 2 goals.
