Saint86 Posted August 31 Posted August 31 (edited) Sounds like we're looking at something like this for the season: I personally prefer having Jander/Downs as a more deep lying creative playmaker in a midfield 3, with Azaz pushing up to support the attackers (he was popping up everywhere vs Watford, finding the pockets and linking the play in the final 3). This approach would give us plenty of options, with movement from the attacking 4 players, and a 2man midfield that is very capable of anchoring the side and recycling play (all 3 of Jander/Downes/Charles are very good for this). I also wouldn't be too attacking with the full backs / wing backs - we are wide open time after time with them doing that - and frankly we need to be tighter - quite happy with them supporting the wingers from behind, but don't need to see them playing in the oppo half regularly or doing mental overlaps that leave us wide open to cross field diagonals and counter attacks. Archer/AA offer mobile pacey strikers who can finish and get on the end of moves, and Downes/Stewart offer us a more physical mobile presence. All in all, the squad seems more balanced now and I am pleased with the amount of players we've shifted. But i do also think there is still too much scar tissue and hesitation from the Martin era - and it is notable that its the likes of Stephens/Manning/THB (could still not be match fit i guess) that are the ones making basic errors and letting the opposition in time after time. Too much to hope for that we sell one of them and get a top quality CB in? I accept we won't have a better keeper than Baz or Macca this year. Edited August 31 by Saint86 3

DT Posted September 1 Posted September 1 We still need someone to stop goals going in and someone to score them. And a strong CDM. Baz was hopeless for those two goals beaten across him from ridiculously tight angles, diving over the ball both times. We will lose more points because of him, just as we did when he was number one before. And up front we look weak, with Armstrong particularly looking like his running around ability is far better than scoring. I’m kind of hoping we lose Downes as his heart is clearly not in it and he is translating that into careless performances on the field and mystery illnesses. I also thought we could do with some muscle - Warford’s team had a bunch of big bullies who, well, bullied us. We are susceptible to that. So. Decent window so far but need more surgery. 1
Saint NL Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Nice to see plucky Liverpool spending at least £150m on the transfer deadline day, only breaking the transfer record twice in one window 😂 But it's Everton and Aston Villa that are the problem 🤔

They also didn't spend much at all last season, and they need to future proof for when Salah retires. And they lost Jota, though a morbid thought, I'm not sure if they get an insurance payout for him. I hate defending Liverpool but I actually think their business has been superb and they must be shoe ins for the Champions League - god help us all.

This is my concern also. Looks like we've improved chance creation but if the stats are anything to go by we were already doing pretty well on that metric -finishing chances and not making mistakes leading to goals are the two things we need to improve and neither of these are going to be solved by bolstering our wide positions. 1

gio1saints Posted September 1 Posted September 1 (edited) My challenge for Will is to put as many of the good new players we have into their known best positions - the positions in which they have done so well they they have come to Saints attention and we bought them. Id be wary of attempting to “ convert” these new players to play other positions or ways of playing. They are joining a team that fell well short last year. So, instead of asking the new ones to play like the players they are replacing I hope Will creates a structure in which the new players can flourish immediately. How? By engineering it so they play in the same way - in the same spaces - or near as damn it - as they did for Brentford, Boro, WBA, etc. THAT is his biggest job imo. Don’t try to fix the new players - play them in their best positions and focus on fixing the old ones to adapt accordingly. And if the old ones don’t or cannot adapt. Move them on. Can’t see him dropping Manning after two excellent strikes then so Jellert will probably be bench for Portsmouth IMO. 1
