So good.

Yes and the club shop can finally sell some of those letter Z's that have been clogging up the stockroom.

Two out and out wingers and a creative AM. Looks great on paper. Despite still a little worried about the keeper/defence there are no excuses for us not to score goals.

I assume you'd be smashing it in your 3rd or 4th language?

If I've got one criticism of the Saints media team it is the crazy banal questions new signings get asked. Would be lovely to hear something about what makes that player special or individual or different.

But there's a difference between answering banal questions sensibly on the day you join a new club and being coached to do it.

Leo Scienza first interview for Saints delighted me. He has charisma, intelligence, poise. And talks in an heartfelt way. And most of all a big smile!

I can almost guarantee he is going to become a massive fan favourite if that approach translates onto the pitch.

A late arriver player who until recently been in lower leagues realises it’s Xmas because he joined Saints is a romantic story I’m sure not just our media will pick up on. He’s going to be a star.

Cute story, but what he does on the pitch is all that matters. Looks promising though.

In Fellows and Scienza (by the look of things), we have 2 players who are brilliant 1vs1 and can beat a man with ease out wide. You could argue the same for Robinson as well. With the German lad in CM, who appears to at his best dictating the play from deep and can play forward balls (something Downes and Charles aren't good at).

That'll create a load of space for players like Azaz in between the lines in the middle or Archer in behind.

On the face of it, we have a brilliant squad at this level. Much, much stronger than when we started.

His playing career has had an odd trajectory - there might be a Ricky Lambert-esque story to enjoy there. Lets hope he smashes it

Watching his highlights it seems that he has decent pace and agility. The main thing I noticed is how much power he gets on shots and crosses without having to lift his foot back much. Set pieces seem to be another strength. Remains to be seen if he can do it in England but he didn’t seem a fish out of water in the Bundesliga, which is very encouraging. Rickie Lambert style long journey to get to a club like Saints and his personality did come across well in the welcome interview. I’m hopeful he will be successful with us.

He's clearly in great form right now. There was that free kick in the Bundesliga (23/8/25) and then the two here and the Beckhamesque lob (admittedly this game is a cup game against lower opposition (16/8/25)

(Link won't embed but worth watching)

I was going to post something something something "never seen this much excitement over a winger's youtube highlgihts since de ridder" something something.

Then i watched that clip. The long range attempt is ridiculous, and his goals are also both quite tasty.

Boufall looked like the next Eden Hazard on YouTube

He looks superb in the clips. There is one where he is tight to the right touchline, he flicks the ball over his opponent, cuts past another player then threads a sublime pass though to a team mate near the edge of the box and, from absolutely nothing, a goal is scored.

I'm not bothered.  It's what they do on the pitch that matters.

I think this will be a proper under the radar signing, all the fans of our promotion rivals will be thinking “who?”, until he plays them. I’m really excited to watch Scienza - Azaz - Fellows, there’s a bit of everything in that trio.

But did he look like that across multiple games played the month before we signed him?

Don’t let any rays of sunshine pierce through Alex's world of gloom. He prefers it that way.

I am in the same sad group as Alex having suffered most of my long life as a Saints fan.

Nothing can reach the excitement of Kevin Keegan's signing but after last years shit show, I am currently feeling a tad optimistic but feel it all disappearing after a 2-0 home defeat in our next home game🙄

Thats a sobering thought.
Wonder what he is like against the ball?

Bet he's nowhere near Mohamed Elyounoussi.

It seems that Scienza and Fellows will provide a decent amount of chances for whoever is in the opponents penalty area.
Apart from Ross Stewart, who's fitness and sharpness has yet to be tested over a period of time, I cant see Archer, Armstrong or Downs having the aerial power to take full advantage.
The last time us older fans would have seen flying wingers feeding a decent centre forward  was in the 1960's when Messers Paine and Sydenham were providing crosses for Ron Davies, who then became the top scorer in the old First Division, mainly die to his unrivalled prowess in the air.

Someone did a search about Will Still's particular favoured style a few days back (sorry I forget who or where). Apparently besides through balls in behind he is a fan of crosses from traditional wingers - but cruicially played on the floor, not in the air - so either pull backs or played a little early and still with a little forward angle.

This is why he wanted quick front men, and our box to box midfielders might fancy that too.

Archer, Downs and Arma could all be classed as reasonably quick in this league, and Nessie is there to change up the style.

I dunno, I’d say Lallana to Lambert was a pretty good winger to striker combo.

Trying not to get too excited about him, because as mentioned above, you can never trust YouTube. But he does look the dogs bollocks, in a way that even De Ridder’s video couldn’t match.

Seems like he can really strike a ball. Plus he’s been involved in big games etc.

It’s been such a long time since I “couldn’t wait” to watch Saints play. Good feeling.

As a card carrying pessimist, I am feeling a tad enthusiastic about the signings.
However I have a noise in my head kindly placed there by fellow poster who reminded us that Boufal looked the business on You Tube as did Orsic to some extent and probably as McCann would have done before You Tube was invented.
What you never see is talented players wandering back after losing the ball or other passages of play which dont do their profiles much good.
I wonder how many transfers are made on the basis of video clips?
Apparently Ted Bates would always want to see players he was interested in play both at home and away as there was often quite a difference in performance levels. Probably not so much nowadays as pitches and stadium facilities are generally similar not like back in the 'Good Old Days'.

Isn't that somewhat one dimensional? Or two maybe, but certainly lacking a dimension.  Or two.

Downs is like 15ft

Edit he is 6ft 4in but still, are the defenders he's facing giraffes ?

Liability defensively, exciting going forward 1-on-1 creative, not the most disciplined and does not care attending a lot.

Played a lot of futsal before taking up football. played 4th division / semi-pro football at the age of 21, had a different career path.

He has a difficult personality, the annoying kid and undisciplined. Butted heads with a lot of people at previous clubs.

May find it difficult to just sit on the bench, and made it clear at his previous club. He had to be treated a certain way to get the best out of him.

He has been playing this season but will need to break into a new team.

He is a set-piece specialist along with 1-on-1/dribbilng in tight spaces

May work behind the striker, but he is a winger so interesting where Will Still will play him, he is not a wing back

Not a fan then, that German 👀

'The annoying kid in the class' butting heads with previous managers. Apparently Magdeburg coaches do not speak highly of him at all!

Basically sounds like Jamie Vardy - a proper nob.

If he ends up being as productive as Vardy then I'll happily take the nob part (not literally, obviously...)
