We almost never catch teams on the break or create great chances which the strikers have to score. Our best chance in the last few games was the Jander one which was a pot shot and he followed it in. Hardly a glorious chance created…

Watching back on old Saints games, it was incredible how quickly we used to get from goalkeeper to opposition penalty area. No stopping at the halfway line and playing a sideways pass as today’s players are minded to do.

I think that's the thing, Whitey. Watching Brentford against West Ham, Brentford had so many chances and they only put a couple away. Our forwards get one maybe two chances a match and we say "how on earth did he miss that?", "should have won that game but for xxxx's miss". Sod xG or whatever the stats are called. In reality, I'm going to the games and can see we're not creating enough chances.

Or Saints players stop on edge of box look left and right the pass sideways or back. If your a professional footballer in any position including goalkeeper you should be able to hit the goal from ede edge. We don't play real football its some middle of the pitch keep ball. Strikers should never pass they are there to hit the goal.

BUT, I can’t help but feel if we had an additional forward or skid fielder racing into the box we’d be tucking more goals away.

All I think about when there’s three at the back is “there’s on additional pass across the back line every time there is the start of an attack from the back”.

That will be us in a couple of years with SR at the reigns.

Looks like a formation tomorrow of 1 GK & 10 random outfield players. And a bench 'worth' more than the whole of the Champ. Knock it around our defensive third for a bit with the odd punt forward to mix it up, rinse and repeat. Our xG will be 27000, 26999 of which will be pass-backs/scuffs/rushed shots/toe punts due to slow build up/players literally shitting themselves. The excuses of 'illness' are being thrown out for why we are so shit. Good one. 

Another bore draw or loss. Cool. 🙂

Still definitely contenders for promotion though.

I remember it being trotted out by Brighton, as a reason to not sack their manager. Their xG was high. Despite not scoring lots of goals and hovering above the relegation zone, they saw the solution in  ringing in more clinical strikers and improving that element.

Since then, every club and manager trots it out in the face of disaster and to ward off sackings. Media obsession with a single stat doesn't help.

The above fails to take into account that this wasn't the only thing Brighton looked at; they knew what they were doing; had a clear plan on where they wanted to be; could build a squad to support it; didn't employ Rasmus; led rather than followed all of it including on resale around a core for sustainability. SR are sad bandwagon jumpers by comparison.

Look at the first half hour from Tuesday night, we can clearly play good football at this level and have players of ability. The issue is the focus and tactics to make this much more consistent. Can we make that happen is the question rather than our quality.

We created three of those at BC midweek. Armstrong scored one (just) and fluffed another, and Archer just blasted his straight at the keeper.

Its was very odd watching that game. If we play well then it only lasts for chunks of the game. Why can Saints play all 97 mins the same way if its successful.  Got to change for no reason and keep reverting to slow defence football. No urgency vs sideways vs attacking.
