Thats a good point. The Championship is a long hard slog for players, especially if you happen to have a bit of a cup run in either competition thrown in for good measure.

Maybe he realises his body just isn't up to it. In which case he's virtually nailed on to go back to Scotland to finish his career.

Anyone who hpoes he gets injured needs to take a look at themselves ffs.

With Robinson and Matsuki as well it seems an embarrassment of riches for the Championship. So perhaps there will be an exit for someone. 

Yep, agreed. On paper that is a decent to strong group. 

Definitely need Edozie and Robinson to be on it to help supplement the team.

Sorry to see Stewart leave, best of luck to him. Can see both sides, at his age he needs to get the best deal he can. Saints understandably hedged their bets, I assume had we been promoted we wouldn't have made an offer, hence the lateness of the offer. Hopefully he ends up in the Scottish Prem rather than another Championship club.

It's a shame he's not staying but after a decent season here his team probably wants a 2-3 year contract given his injury woes. Does seem a bit ungrateful but can also see the club's perspective not wanting to extend him.

I would guess he's hoping for Celtic? Free transfer would suit them and they have European football to offer.

I don’t think anyone is going to offer a very injury prone 30 year old a 4 year deal. I wish him all the best and hope he stays injury free and scores for Scotland. He will still be shown as a Southampton player until 1 July. However it’s a relief now not having to worry about him getting crocked during the World Cup, and not being able to start next season for Saints due to injury.

Hearts have three chances at being in a European League next season, if they fail to win the Champions League Qualifier, they go to a Europa League Qualifier, If they fail to win the Europa League Qualifier they get a UEFA Conference League Qualifier.

Even if Stewart is on a Lower monthly wage, I bet he'll get decent performance bonuses at Hearts

Their income and wage budget would still be tiny compared to ours. Our matchday income, commercial deals and most significantly huge parachute payments blow them out of the water.

Yes, see my posts before. If he goes to Hearts or Celtic he gets Champions League football, and is closer to home and family. We also should consider that we have actually, probably, not offered him anything. We tried to invoke an option but it was past its sell by date and so was rejected on a technicality. There is no evidence that we have offered him anything else and it could be that he (or his representatives) indicated he wanted to see what else was out there. He's now at the WC at least for a few days until Scotland return home (probably very soon), he is unlikely to play many minutes, because there are other preferred options ahead of him and after that he will see what to do. It still wouldn't greatly surprise me to see him back with us, but of course Saints will be planning for him not being here and looking for alternatives. Everyone seems to think that signing Larin is the answer to life the universe and everything, sadly its not Cyle (who I really like) is injury prone (not in the same was as Ross, more short term niggles) and his fitness is highly questionable. Having Cyle and Ross together was a perfect situation. Some of the comments on here about Stewart are disgraceful, he gave us a lot in the last 6 months, people seem to forget his goals in the FA Cup that enabled us to get to Wembley once at least, as well as his contributions in the League. As you say, in the end not everything is about money, when you are paid what even Championship players are paid, the difference between top whack and average is not life changing, better to be happy, fulfil some ambitions and enjoy your short time in the game.

But out extension for what? Another year

Hearts (or another club) may offer him 2-3 years

Even taking it as face value, I'm not sure we need another small, lightweight midfielder - especially with the assumption that Charles will be leaving.

With no fee to pay to a club, a nice sign on fee would make the total monetary value to Stewart the same or more.

Saints also would have no transfer fee to pay, so can inflate the deal from a base of having significantly more money than Hearts.

We wanted to trigger a 12 month extension, not some fancy new deal.

There are a few pointers here to suggest this might be true

he capitalises VERY which suggests he has a strong belief in his news

he knows the reason why Gailbraith wants the move, tired of life in Swansea, suggests his source is the player or someone very close

The fact that he says others will claim they had if first, seems confident he’s breaking this one, I’m not really sure why anyone would be boasting about a transfer between two championship club for a relatively unknown player 

seems like this one is hotting up 🔥🔥🔥🔥
