Alfie House suggesting the club are targeting Ross Stewart as the striker signing. Thoughts?

I think it'll be wrapped up in the next couple of days. He'll be on the plane out to Germany IMO. If it means we can spend money in other areas of the squad, it's a no brainer. Always going to be a question mark over his fitness, but I really liked him and Larin alternating at the backend of last season.

It's not concerning is it. Had we not had spygate and not got promoted then we would have kept him for another year anyway and this wouldn't be a discussion.

Im VERY concerned, we missed out on Lankshear, we missed out on Dan Neil, Stewart couldn't wait to leave now we're begging him to come back. Our only new signing is a midtable championship striker, im VERY, VERY concerned. Going to be a long season and the management seem happy to sit back as Rome burns.

They also had Ed Sheerin working overtime with his star power to convince Delap to go there.

Our equivalent superstar, Mike Osman, did fuck all. Thanks a lot, Mike.

But Craig David did, He spoke to him on Monday, then again on tuesday, and wednesday.....

I wouldn't be averse to keeping Archer as 3rd choice as he can also play wide but at his age he will probably want more first team football so that is understandable. I still want a 3rd striker though, yes Akachukwu and Oyekunle scored against Eastleigh but I wouldn't want to rely on them all season. That said we have to get the second striker through the door yet!

I'm not sure what wages Archer was signed on, and I'd presume there was a relegation clause written into his contract, but even so I would think he is being paid too much to be a third choice, sit on the bench option. I don't think we'll put up too much of a fight if he wants to leave.

Hmmm. Stewart or someone who would also start regularly in the EPL if we get promoted this season? 🤔

How do you know Lankshear would be good enough to start for us if we get promoted? If anything, Stewart has shown himself potentially capable of stepping up if he can stay fit.

If we actually got promoted and he was brilliant this year we could just sign him anyway.

I'd be happy if Saints bring Ross Stewart back- but even if they do I fully expect them to sign another younger striker - just not at £14M.

Don't forget we still have Oyekunle, Brereton-Diza, Damian Downs and Archer on the books as well.

But I fully expect Archer and BBD to leave permanently and Downs to go on loan to the Bundesliga 2 or the US at the very least and a younger striker signed with Oyekunle being given game time as well.

I don’t and I didn’t mention Lankshear. I was talking about whether a replacement for Stewart should be Stewart or someone who possibly would be a better option longer term.

I thought missing out on Lankshear would be a blow but for 14 million I'd feel we would be leaving ourselves weaker elsewhere for that amount of cash.

100% agree

I thought the whole thing of Stewart leaving was that he had a very high salary for someone who was only available half the season and can't complete 90mins, and that ditching him, and potentially selling Archer would allow us to buy a star fit starting striker (in addition to Larin). I like Ross as a player and a person, but there'll always be a big question mark as to whether he's fit enough.

The other way to think is that we really need Downs to come good - maybe with someone like Larin around helping him, he might have a chance if he's kept around?!

I'm assuming Brereton-Diaz is off and that Oyekunle and Dipepa aren't really ready for regular first team football.

So we should all wish really, really, really hard and it will come true, just like in the fairy tales?

After watching him against Eastleigh there is no hope Downs is going to turn into a footballer.

Its not confidence with him, it is more he’s done an Ali Dia on us and mugged us off for 7m.

£6-10m on a striker or one for free who we know and is good, albeit a bit fragile....

If we can get steward it would be ideal IMO

Not ideal at all. H&S rules insist he'd have to play in Hi-Viz clothing.

I wonder if Tonda thinks one of the u21 is ready to step up . Oyekunle and Akachukwu both scored on Saturday albeit against lower league opposition.

Both only 19 years old, IIRC. Akachukwu about to turn 20. So, a bit of an ask for either of them to be a reliable option up top even off the bench occasionally. I haven’t seen much of either but Akachukwu seems to be described as an attacking midfielder rather than a striker in most outlets I’ve looked at.

With Dobbin signed and supposedly a decent central striker, chances are going to be hard to come by if we secure a Stewart / Lankshear figure. Tonda will have a good idea of them though so time will tell.

To think that Saints bought this person as our main 'striker' last year is really really irritating. Every time he stepped on the pitch, anyone could tell he is clueless, useless and a waste of space. And stop wasting a place in this season's friendlies. He is not getting any better.

As for BBD. Again, get rid of him. I'd bring Ross back. He's got good awareness, has a reasonable shot and even the way he bundled that goal in against Boro in the play offs shows he has the height and presence to be a nuisance in the penalty area. With Dobbin secured, our front men look reasonable.

Apparently the deal hit a snag when Nuno phoned him up and said, "don't leave me this way!"

I hope its for reduced wages than he was on given he and his team utilised the fact we were eliminated from the play off final meant the saints option to extend him for another year had "lapsed" as we had to do it before season was and we only found out our season was over a week after it was so they could go and flaunt their arse at other teams for better pay.

They will absolutely walk the league with that kind of budget and Nuno at the helm. Very unfortunate.

What a bellend, going to Saudi at 24. Surely could have gone to a proper league.

Why, it's his career? If he's being offered a disgusting pile of tax free cash to kick a football around for a few years, fair play to him.

He'll look back and wish he'd done something else. He can earn a pile of cash in England and be respected and then do a couple of years in Saudi later, or he can sit around in Saudi being bored shitless and disrespected by me.

He'll probably bank £30-40m in 3 years or so. I think we'll see more young players go there early when they're in demand early in their careers - there's no guarantee that they'll be in demand later in their career, or that the gravy train will still be running.

£80M is mental. He’s decent but Christ. 😂

Great finances for those selling to Saudi, knowing full well that in a year or so’s time they’ll be available on a free or for cut price.

See Jhon Duran, who is now on club five (I think) since moving to Saudi two years ago.

Depends entirely on what the fees are.

He should be lucky to get anywhere near the terms he supposedly wanted a month ago.

Quite frankly, I was hoping the club would’ve aimed higher, mainly for someone who can stay fit and step up a division.

Would 100% take us bringing Ross Stewart back for free, than spending £15m on Lankshear.

We're not really in the position to be throwing money about and still need to shift Charles and at least one other player (hopefully Ramsdale) to balance the books

Given our limited funds I'd be really pleased that we have two good Championship strikers locked down. We could really do with the roughly ten million we would have had to have spent on a replacement. It could for example allow us to keep THB, Jander or Scienza for a season or bring in a better replacement than we otherwise could have afforded if they go.

West Ham have to make money before they can think of spending, their wage bill is significantly more than ours was when we first went down - plus they owe millions in transfer fees.

Reportedly needed 150m to stay afloat, with no money for outgoings (which they roughly have done admittedly).

Look at fernandes, 85m looks a lot for us, but half of that they had already paid us! That brings it down to 40m or so which we got for dibling. Similar for sommersville who they paid 30m for - £65m becomes £35m profit or fernanded territory.

Amazing business, but it had to be by necessity of the fees they spunk on players (Fullkrug 30m, todibo 30m, Pablo 20m, tasty 20m,  kilman 40m, JWP 30m.. plus all are on over 100k weekly, of which JWP was the only near for us)
