It's not like we haven't seen this coming. We just don't seem to be in a position to be proactive with too big a squad

We should be able to replace Charles and THB as we knew they would be sold. I know we will replace them before the end of August but that doesn't help us today does it. If we don't win today you can argue that the club are at least partly responsible for selling the players without replacements yet.

Sigh. Year after year it seems that people suffer from amnesia and forget that this happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

If, we could control when we sold players (even ones we didn't want to lose) we would. This has a direct impact on players we can bring in.

No clubs have no control over that. It's the way the window works and it's not going to change. Other clubs will lose players they don't want to close to the window. Do you think 'Boro wanted to lose Azaz as late as they did, for example?

We also don't see the majority of the planning the club does. We would have planned for this scenario and started previous seasons in Championship with players like JWP, Tella, Dibling and Fernandes getting minutes before being sold. We see so little of this and have to rely on rumours and bullshit, but the club are never going to show their hand - it would be terrible business strategy to do so. We also don't know the exact financial pressures, again for good reason.

If THB doesn't play today then the timing is poor, but again out of our control when a team like Villa put a serious bid in. That's what we have a squad for. I'm confident we'll get someone in to replace him, whether he's as good will be down to the quality of the recruitment.

Good, I don’t rate him.

Would complete the circle for Mings who was released by Saints as a kid before going to Chippenham i think

He's a Chippenham lad, but I think there was bad blood when he left Saints, his Dad Adie got the boot as well - think it was down to Lowe IIRC. Don't think Tyrone will be heading to Saints any time soon. It was mooted a few years back when he was at Ipswich.

Exactly! He is a Southampton player until he isn’t. Very unprofessional.

Doesn’t mean he has refused to play tho in all likelihood that is the case. Just wanted to know how the poster knew before the team was announced.

Dom Ballard scores his first goal, probably the winner, for Bristol City. It’s a backheel volley with echoes of Guimares goal for Newcastle at SMS. Tolaj has also looked very handy. Birmingham make it 2-2 straight away from a corner - but no, seems to be an offside. Oh, what a surprise, it’s a referee blooper.

The Villa fans for one on their forum! They can't believe they're signing a Championship centre back to play in the Champions League. Despite the fact he played and scored for England and was one of our better players in our Prem relegation season. He may not be the same level but he's only 24.

The fact for us is that he is our best CB and will be tough to replace but I wouldn't begrudge him a move to Villa and I suspect it'll be 25 million up front with extras up to 30 and a sell on clause. We can do business with that but it still blows that it'll come at this time of the window. I just hope it doesn't cause any unrest amongst others that might think their futures are above us.

Its all about selling high and buying bargains for most teams including Saints. No different than an antique dealers.

Actually not a bad suggestion. Would want him and another though. I think he’s a better option than Wood or Stephens next to a new THB replacement.

Have a red and blue team transfer Bargain Hunt competition.

Give the blue team the Ankerson brothers and we can call it Bargain Cunt.

Even Kevin Webster would have better than Stephens last week, if he was real, and could have shut the garage down for a day in Weatherfield.

Perhaps his wife’s sister in law was cutting THB’s hair this morning?

Do we know how much we're getting for him at least? Really hope it’s towards £30M total (i.e., with add ons).

20m plus add ins, far to cheap for a player who’s importance to us is massive

Need 1xGK (if/when both Ramsdale and Bazunu go), 2xCB (once Harwood-Bellis goes), 1xCM (x2 if Jander's off), and probably another wide attacker - Fellows has been disappointing, and Scienza may or may not be phoning it in.

A lot to do in a little time.

If he’s left out this soon after an £18m bid I think anything close to £30m with add ons is unrealistic

Yeah 20 plus 5 add ons will do it. Definitely too cheap.

Needs to be 30+ Add ins to reflect his value to us

It’s a bit more than we paid for him, which makes sense as he hasn’t really gone beyond what he was back then. When we agreed a fee of part of his loan, he was a top quality Championship player who’d just got promoted with Burnley. Now he’s a top quality Championship player who’s just reached the playoffs with Southampton.

We can’t just demand more because we want it. £25m is about the ceiling for a Championship defender, I can’t think of any off hand who’ve sold for more. It’d be our record signing if we were buying him.

It might be SR think that getting £20 million up front gives us more time in the window to bring in recent replacements. Drag it on for another week or so and we'd only have a matter of days to sign players.

I'm not sure he's worth less than Charles though.

Charles has looked like he can make the step up. THB did not when we were in the Premier League (not that any player covered themselves in glory last season). I think that THB is decent but lacking pace and physicality to be a really top Premier League player. That being said I'd rather have him in the side than Wood.

Ake went for 40 ish. The next highest is Godfrey for (from memory, i posted it last week) 23 so 25 million or similar would put him at the second highest for  Championship CB. Under what he's perhaps worth to us but as in my last post, it's possible we want the money quickly to give us room to move quickly in the window. It might be the players we want are available now and we need the fee to move for them. Strengthen now and we may have more luck holding on to Casper, Leo, Azaz etc.

We paid £20m for him ffs, and he’s improved since.

Yep agreed in reality we should of said double that or piss off. Doesn't make sense does it ?

Would he be the type of player who would become disruptive if we refuse ? Why are we so desperate to cash in ?

So now we need

Centre back

Def Mid

And possibly another Striker

Agree with some of the above, anything less than £25m plus add ons seems under valued to me. Bought by us for £20m, has since played for England and had a great season last season. Transfer fees for PL clubs are constantly on the rise too. He’s got a couple of years on his contract, I believe, so no worries there.

Even £25M plus £5M add ons seems a little generous. But I guess being a championship club puts a glass ceiling on it. But it seems we might let him go for less than we got for Shea Charles, which doesn’t seem like a brilliant deal.

I also read that Man City have a 25% clause. Saw someone suggest the fee may be low so as to offset a Dobbin payment and so keep the headline fee lower, which could be true I suppose.

As a Championship club we've sold players for £40m and £58m.

And a back up GK and possibly another winger. Then replace Jander and Scienza if they end up going. Tons of work to be done. 10 days to go.

Aston Villa are also a higher level than Fulham and have had a lot of money come into them through sales this summer. We should absolutely push for £25m+ from them.

I find it very odd that both Benfica and Villa have been linked with initial offers lower than the figure reported we initially paid for THB. Hopefully the club display again that they know what they’re doing when negotiating fees in. I really do think that anything less than the Shea Charles fee would be too low.

With O'Brien Whitmarsh gone and THB on his way out, we're rapidly running out of players with double barrelled names. Only Nathan Wood remains in the senior squad, with Dobson-Ventura and Rohart-Brown in the youth. Kayi Sanda and Sillah Dibaga don't count on account of no hyphen.

Bring JWP home then. 😝

He's played and scored for England, so that's an automatic increase to his value.

Yep, I said the same earlier. And his stock must have surely risen last term given the audience of a cup semi final and another promotion push.

Fingers crossed we’ll find that the actual fee is much higher than that reported.

I don't think too much can be taken from his solitary England cap. It was given to him by a non permanent England manager who he worked with at under 21 level. I think it was essentially a reward for being Carsley's under 21 captain. He wasn't England senior team quality.

Who is the other defender that Alfie House mentioned - Henrik Falchener? Does he know that the club are in for him? Didnt he suggest Mubama on loan before we signed him?

He doesn't claim to know, he has stated it is just a suggestion.
