After a decent spell earlier in the half when we looked like we had more control, Lincoln were already pushing again and creating chances before that sub. The real problem is the lack of defensive qualities of both Wood and Stephens, we are always likely to concede when pressured if one of them are on the pitch. We can only hope that Abbott comes good once has has settled in and can take over as partner for Schlott. All good points. The defence was exposed more as we lost our threat up front as well, not keeping hold of the ball. All the subs were poor today IMO. 2

saint michael Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago What did Tonda learn from last year that he is applying this year? Recruitment of players that were not here last year have been awful. Last year we let the top 2 get away which left us fighting to get into the playoffs and having to play out of our skin to get there. so starting on -4 we needed to start on fire but no … we seem to still be experimenting with Shyte tactics of slow possession football and a squad not capable of it outside the starting 11. goodness knows how any action taken by FA on Tonda will effect us. Just can’t see many positives to build on at the moment 2

You don’t need to have played the game at even semi pro level to see that he is a very long way off Championship level. He’s not even a leader on the pitch. Until Stephens is dropped permanently we will struggle. He was average last season. This season he is a long way from average. 2

saintstowin Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) So frustrating when we don't turn up. From the start we were sluggish and lacking ideas. A glance at stats at half time showed a very high passing accuracy, not due to any degree of skill but because we didn't try to do anything with any ambition. Just pass, pass, pass. There was one passage around 18 minutes in on the left when up to 4 different players all failed through poor choice to put a ball into the box, instead passing it around until it went back to the goalie. I guess we assumed we'd score goals at some stage. It had the feel of expecting to rather than earning the win. And no matter how average we were, I can't believe we handed the advantage to them in the last half an hour as we did through poor management. Very disappointing. Edited 8 hours ago by saintstowin

Yep, looks like lack of quality and depth on the bench is really going to cost us this season unless we can get more of a tune out of the likes of Mubama, Dobbin, Edozie. Criminal though really that we have left ourselves relying so much on the young unproven Mubama to back Larin up. Time to look again at that free agent list?! 3

Scienza's double post shot was the defining moment in the game, but our players need a lesson in positivity. It doesn't help players nonsense football. We a game plan for winning not 500 passes.

SaintlyAnd Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Looking forward to the post match comments from Eckert about how there were good things (there weren’t) and bad things that we’ll work on. We really need to be playing the ball into the box faster and with players making runs, but its so slow and predictable, and relying on individual moments like today.
cambsaint Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I really cannot believe this. Tactically hopeless, wtf has happened to Tonda, I just hope its the disgraceful FA taking so long to come to a decision that's distracting him. However I thought JWP was excellent until he tired as was Downes. I cannot agree with the anti Edozie sentiment. (Saints supporters always seem to need a whipping boy I am old enought to remember Sydenham who was unjustly crucified by the supporters. Scienza isnt being used correctly, apart from his freak goal miss. He shouldn't be taking corners instead of JWP for two reasons, he isn't as good and possibly most importantly he would be more use waiting at the back of the box for a loose ball Peretz's distribution was absolutely shocking. He shouldn't be entrusted with free kicks anywhere near the half way line. Quite what Tonda is thinking leaving an international class goalie out in the cold is beyond me. Loyalty can only go so far, logical reasoning has got to come into it. That team properly managed should have crushed Lincoln instead we were lucky to end up with a draw Also why this season are we starting so badly. To say that I an angry is an understatement.

OldNick Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I was not a fan of signing JWP and whilst he has done Ok I wonder if his negative/safe passing will instill the same into the rest of the team. Its ok being tidy but somebody has to provide the thrust into the frontline. Signing him took the focus away from getting the powerful midfielder we really needed. I will add I didnt watch teh game to today but seeing JWP passing map and the fact we hd 60% possession but less XG shows how the game went 4

At that point we were all over them. And then inexplicably Tonda took off our best players who were making it happen. From that point it was diabolical. In over 50 years of watching Saints I rarely ever recall a worse use of substitutes. Tonda got every one wrong. With 10 to go he took off Matsuki and brought on Wood. The inevitable then happened. That last 30 today was simply horrific. 3

So typical of the cowardly way Ward-Prowse has always played. Could have taken a touch and unleashed a worldy himself, could have whipped it to the far post, could have made a slide rule pass into the box. Nahh not James 'Mr Safe' Ward -Prowse, nothing entered his brain other than there's a safe pass to my left. For all the stick Edozie is getting, he at least ran at people and tried to make something happen. Today's problem was not leaving Azaz on. Might have got away with changing Larin and Scienza, we lost some cohesion in our attack but were still in control, as soon as Azaz went off the front 4 played as if they'd never seen each other before. 2

Seems like it was pre-planned to sub him and Larin on the hour with the Swansea game in mind. But I agree, you need to respond to what's needed in the game. Given the poor 1st half team performance and that Leo was finally getting some joy, he should have left him on for at least another 10-15 mins to try and get that 2nd goal which would/should have killed the game off. Dan Johnson Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago 41 minutes ago, Patches O Houlihan said: The problem is not Downes and JWP. The problem is that the hard working effective players ahead of them being swapped for players who aren't. As I said last week if the players ahead of you are stood in the wrong place so a defender is blocking the pass then you are forced into sideways passing. This was JWPs pass map just before half time. Bearing in mind how deep Lincoln were defending during the first half this is not the crab football that you go on about - unless you think we should just aimlessly boot it into a packed box and hope for lucky breaks? Absolutely this. There will be games like today, where teams frustrate and there's no space to play, soo I'm not too critical of the fact we didn't role them over and struggled to make clear cut chances, but you absolutely have to compete physically in this league and thats where we came unstuck today. Once Edozie\Mubama came on, Mubama the main culprit, the ball just wasn't sticking up top, which it needed to do, you defend from the front and we stopped doing that as soon as these two came on. 60 minutes was way too early to make these subs, we should (and I think would) have killed the game off between 60-70 and then the games done and you make the subs around 70-75 minutes knowing the subs will get 20 mins. 3
