Thedelldays Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 he has been getting pelters all week for some comments..and maybe rightly so... hell, one or two have claimed that the players hate him and dont respect him (still not seen any reports of this and is porbably just made up Bullshyte) but so far he is doing OK...pretty much on par with Nigel Pearson Football Genius with regards to points per game (when in charge) return.. by the sounds of it he has changed a few things and doing different stuff with the team and when was the last time we were 3-0 up at half time... I have no doubt that the minute we would have gone behind today he would have got a farking bashing..so credit where it is due IMO if he could keep a tad quieter and produce this for the club more often than not..then we may get out of this... well done FOR TODAY Mr Wotte....more of the same please

Arizona Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Credit where credit's due indeed. He did well today. The real test will be whether he can put a good run together and make us hard to beat and not put his foot in it with press conferences. A few more comments accusing the fans and saying things like "Saga hasn't contributed in recent games" and we'll probably be right back on his back again. Arizona Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Got the right response from Saga though didnt he? I wouldn't call it a response so much as an interuption. Saga had 4 in 4 games, then gets taken off when he failed to score in what, 1 1/2 games. If Saga looked lazy and complacent, then I might be inclined to agree with you, but that doesn't sound like any Saga performance I've ever seen. I can't help but feel that had Saga stayed on, we could have got something at Bristol. Saga has shown in the past he is capable of scoring when he and Saints are playing poorly. SaintRobbie Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 I totally agree. Credit where it is deservedly due, but it's only one game.... One half methinks. If he consistently produces the wins I will get behind him. But I'm afraid I can't help but think Preston didnt turn up and flattered us in the 1st half. Still.... its a good start... still think Wotte's a ***** though.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Same as most football fans, a win usually does the trick. Pathetic really but hey a win does lift spirits and hopefully the players confidence will increase? Looked liked they had won the FA Cup at final whistle today - been a long time I suppose!? Those that were at the game today will know not to get carried away - good result but not a polished performance and I wont get carried away with one result. Thought Euell was a good asset today - hopefully Wotte will continue with Euell in a more forward postion as he offered so much more........ Fingers crossed and a win is a win......just need a few more now!
VectisSaint Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Great result today, good performance by the sound of things. Deliberately didn't listen, only caught up at half-time. Credit Wotte, who made plenty of enemies this week among supporters, he does at least seem to have changed things drastically from Nice But Dim. At least I can have a happy weekend. BUT, bottom line is we are still 23rd. The proof of the pudding will be on what follows. 3 points at home is what we should be expecting, fact is only 2nd home win all season. Well done Mr Wotte, perhaps if you had kept your mouth shut before the game, things would be even better tonight.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 I cannot complain about ANY performance today. Even McGoldrick worked his socks off for the team. Outstanding performance medals go to... Saga, Size and particularly Euell who I thought not only made the ultimate difference to the front line, did everything he could to gee the players and act like a real leader. Excellent hard working display though from all of them. As far as Wotte is concerned - he will earn his credit in my eyes when he chooses the same team for next weeks game and gets another win under his belt. Then I might actually start to believe he has something to offer this club. And my hope will return.
St Marco Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 I think the guy does deserve a bit of respect for the way he approached this game. He changed things around and dropped the dutch system. Only one player in the team was not here last season. We ditched youth for experience and that balance made a huge difference. Add a bit of quality from Surman and Saga and the deserved result came. However trying to be all smug about things with 1 win in 5 is a bit premature. If we replicate that into the last 13 we are down for sure. What matters is how we go on from here. We have a week off then go into a very busy period of games, a period that will show us if we are most likely down or in with a chance. If we lose next weekend then this game will mean nothing. This whole game by game he is great then he is crap then he is great etc needs to stop. Judge the guy at the end of the season. He gets a lot of flak from people, i myself have questioned his ability/experience. But if the team can perform like this with consistency then even the hardest of critics would have to say the boy done good.
rallyboy Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Well done Mr Wotte, and the players, a great display. I like many have been critical but points are everything and today you delivered. Whether todays sudden tactical U turn was about fan pressure or you just saw the light yourself doesn't matter, the fact that it has taken until now to establish a good tactical approach also won't matter if we stay up. Let's go get more points and stay united behind a team and coach that has finally delivered!

sidthesquid Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 McGoldrick was excellent today. He was and he really looks like he has a) grown up a realised what being a pro is about & b) found his best position. He has some genuine ability, he can run at people and find space, but he is never, ever going to be a back-to-goal old-fashioned centre forward & fair play to Wotte for working that out

ItchenRob Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Saints are undoubtedly sharper and more direct under Wotte. Having been manager of the Dutch U21 side and DoF (or similar) at Feyenoord he probably has a reasonable idea of how the game should be played. Marchers holding up placards saying he hasn't got a clue frankly make me cringe !
jasonbenali Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 Fair play to the guy. I was critical of his appointment and still have my doubts, but he addressed our main failings this season. Picked experienced players, played 4-4-2 with decent width, clinical strikes and even his gamble with McGoldrick paid off. Also did his homework on Parkin by keeping a high line so he couldn't bully us in the box. Well done.

Not saying he will suceed as still early days but can you imagine similar against NP last season who certainly had no more impact at this stage, possibly less. (debateable point I concede). St Paul Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 It's too early for me to judge Wotte but the signs are a bit more promising. He seems to have basically thrown out the blueprint laid down by Jan and is doing what countless posters have been calling for all season. A mix of youth and older heads and a more direct style. Personally he comes across as a bit of a t*at, however if he keeps us up, will deserve a lot of respect. What I would like to know is if he ever advised Jan to go down this route (whilst Jan was insisting otherwise) Whether Lowe is now allowing him to play all the senior guys, whilst denying Jan that option, or whether he's worked out that this is the way to get results in this league. I guess only Jan and Lowe know the answer to that.
capitalsaint Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 i LIKE the fact that he's arrogant. Ferguson, Wenger, whoever you want, they all think they're the brilliant and a great manager has to have confidence in themselves... I know some would argue that he hasn't had any of the success that they have, but everybody starts somewhere. Plus, his comments about positive support giving the players an extra few percent is TRUE. We might not like it, because he was appointed by Lowe and so must be terrible, but I have a hell of a lot more respect for someone who calls it as they see it, even if they are having a go at me. Remember Norwich in the relegation season? That party atmosphere definitely pushed Camara and the boys to win it for us. I'm not that fussed if I get slated for thinking this, and I thought it before today's win, but I think Wotte has more to come than what we are seeing. Mole Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 "they are easy with their judgement" were Wottes words to describe Saints fans, therefore i will reserve giving him any credit until i see us out of the relegation zone.
Bailey Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 (edited) Credit to Wotte today, he got his tactics spot on. Playing Euell alongside Saga with McGoldrick behind them proved to be a shrewd move and it paid dividends in the end. Since he's taken charge, we've definitely been more direct and physical in our approach, and we look a much better side for it. Lets not get carried away with today though. It's a start, but there is still ALOT of work to be done. Edited 21 February, 2009 by Bailey
