Spades Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 All a big IF, but should we get decent investment after the end of the season, who would your first realistic signing be that could help drive us forward to the top of League 1? Was having this convo with my dad at the Palace game. We need someone with strong leadership skills, someone the younger players can look to, someone that is passionate about Southampton, someone thats been there and done it, someone that can step into the team and take the captains armband off of the (i assume) departing Kelvin Davis... Step forward Matt Oakley. If we had the funds and could make a decent offer to Leicester, somewherer in the region of 500-750k. He is a Saints boy, passionate about the club and im sure would welcome a return here. Fair enough he may want to play at the higher level of the Championship, but i think he could be persuaded. Who would you sign...realistically?
Saint_clark Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Oakley would never come back, he lost all his passion for us in that first season we were down. I would sign Campbell-Ryce from Barnsley.

saints_is_the_south Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Simon Cox of Swindon or Rickie Lambert of Bristol Rovers. Both got about 25+ goals in League 1 this season. James Hayter at Doncaster also another player who knows how to get goals in that division.
Griffo Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Why would he drop a division? From lower divisions. Ricky Lambert, maybe Grant Holt Adam Le Fondre All strikers.
sambosa75 Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Aaron McLean from Peterborough.
Griffo Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Aaron McLean from Peterborough. Or Mackail-Smith. But it looks likely that they are going up. So again, I presume they wouldn't want to drop a division. Especially when they've just been bought up from non-league football, Championship would be a massive opportunity for them. BotleySaint Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 If Carlisle go down from League 1 to League 2 then i'd go knocking for Danny Graham. Consistently scored goals at League 1 level for years!
Bailey Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Aaron McLean from Peterborough. He did say realistic. Peterborough are more than likely going to be promoted to The Championship.
Chris Larkin Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 How about Alan Bennett? He's played a full season with Brenford this year, who will likely win League Two. He's also out of contract with Reading at the end of this season, so no transfer fee. I personally think he would be excellent in League One. Nexstar Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Ricky Lambert is a pretty good shout, depending on what happens over the next couple of months he may see there being more potential here than at rovers.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 Oh dear - look at the names being put forward...this is the bit that is so, so sickening. Saints fans placing the hopes of the future in players from the likes of Peterborough and Doncaster like they were the crown jewels. Stupert Lowe really has destroyed us... what a good job he has done too... we're on our knees. I am more of a mind to think about what must be achieved with what is here. Wotte and his 'team' must go....even Killer. The players I would try very hard to keep are as follows... Davis, Saga, Perry...possibly Size. That's it. To be fair despite our rather lacklustre form this season I've been fairly ignorant of whats been happening in League One. Both good players though. Sad times that staying with Peterborough is seen as a wiser career move than signing with the once mighty Saints.

Who would you sign...realistically? Tough one this. Leo Fortune West would deffo be top on my shopping list. Then I would want a "second squad" like Man U and the Arse have for European games. This would enable us to keep our Johnstone's Paint Trophy dreams alive. Lets not put all our eggs in one basket (or stollen tesco trolley). Legod Third Coming Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 A CAPTAIN No offence to KD but we need some fecking great cojonas in the midfield. Heskey, tbf isn't that bad i don't see how het gets so much bad press if he has a goal scorer next to him it works hes good in the air and chips in with a few (not prolific) but overall a good striker to be fair... Ewell Posted 19 April, 2009 Share Posted 19 April, 2009 Lee Trundle and give him the number 7 shirt. He is a goal scorer and the nearest thing to MLT in the modern game. He would help keep our profile high with his weekly tricks on Soccer AM. He has also done it in league 1 consistently before. He plays with passion and would be someone for the younger players to look up to. If we got the likes of Trundle and Savage then I could see Saints making a fairly quick return. I agree decent shout, after a real bad start (One of the worst I've seen) I thik he got better and better in the final games for us, was surprised that since there he has been playing in League 2. Personally I would go for Rickie Lambert of Bristol Rovers, we've lacked goals this season and this guy will get a hateful again next season, however I expect some championship club to snap him up. He plays with passion and would be someone for the younger players to look up to. If we got the likes of Trundle and Savage then I could see Saints making a fairly quick return. No offence and I know we are talking a division below, but I thought Savage was complete toss against us earlier in the season, our short, young midfield played through him like he wasn't there and but for better finishing (story of our season) we'd have done them. I'd rather try really hard to keep Gillet who was playing very well until injury (and I would argue that our recent poor run has coincided with his injury) than sign someone like Savage. At least the likes of Thomson, White and Paterson all have recent league 1 experience, which will be invaluable next season. Someone like Deon Burton would be the kind of player I'd want or Windass... or promising youngsters from league 2 or lower league 1.
VectisSaint Posted 19 April, 2009 Share Posted 19 April, 2009 Errrrm....no we're not Ye of little faith. We are Southampton. Great escapes is what we do best! We DID great escapes, when we had players and management who were up for it. Our current shower of ****e know they won't be here next season and have already given up. Face it. WE have been relegated since before Christmas, our only hope then was getting shot of the Dutch crap, but we didn't. And of course if we weren't relegated we would get 10 points deducted. Reality is sometimes hard to swallow.
