Pompey Takeover Saga

More portsmyths from Twitter. In their desperate attempt to try and "win" the attendance "debate", they're suggesting we had to close entire stands at St Mary's when we were in League 1 :mcinnes:

Not in L1 but did we not have sections closed off whilst Lowe was still Chairman when we were in the Championship before we went into administration? I seem to remember that the club kept sections of the ground shut in an attempt to save money, but that was specifically because crowds were down as they were protesting against Lowe and boycotting matches.

I can remember corners being closed and a miserable night against Preston in the early rounds of the League Cup but the average attendance belies all the skate myths, They really are desparate!

We didn't sell the seats in the corners as a cost saving measure (unlike the crooks down the road, we tried to do something about the financial situation), our relegation from the Championship season saw the only time our season-average at St Mary's ever slipped under the 20,000s. Lowe returning hit attendances hard. And they really shouldn't knock our attendances in League 1, our crowds were getting on for double what they were getting in the same division.

I thought a decent cup run was part of their financial needs this season, I am sure I read that somewhere.

It seems Cup Runs aren't all that, and getting knocked out in the 1st Round of The League Cup and FA Cup was all a part of the plan!!

As alluded to above, Factless Allen didn't do the match report, so we missed out on how their huffing was the huffiest ever, and little urchins had tears running down there grubby little faces at the magnificent heroics on display by the boys in blue and the atmosphere generated by the 7500 home fans (even though they were outsung by the 500 Wycombe Fans!!) Seems Rule No 1 was NOT to mention the booing.... no siree bob, they don't boo their own players or manager :mcinnes:

Cookie Boy did make some pretty interesting comments though .....

Some cracking quotes from their absolute Bellend of a Manager after their loss to Wycombe in Round 1 of The FA Cup. It seems to be looked upon as a blessing so that they can concentrate on The League

Last season Pompey reached the second round of the Capital One Cup and the fourth round of the FA Cup. Yet Cook is convinced the Blues’ FA Cup progress hampered their league ambitions. He added: ‘Last year I felt we got embroiled in cup competitions which had a derogatory effect on our league.

We are a League Two team, we finished sixth in League Two last year, this year we are fifth, last year we had fantastic cup runs, this year we are having none.

Er ....about these fantastic Cup Runs.....

Knocked out The JPT after just 1 game. Knocked out of The League Cup in Round 2. Out of 2 Cup Competitions by 1st Sept, and out of The FA Cup by end of January, having reached the lofty stage of 4th Round. In total 8 Cup Games , only 2 of which were away!! I guess by Skatesmuff standards these can be seen as Fantastic Cup Runs.

Think he means detrimental instead of derogatory. Unless the fans were shouting "you're sh it and you know you are..." which is more than possible.

He also changed the gate opening times from 1.30pm to 1.45pm for the same reason.

What about this from Wikipedia?

The 1890 Southampton Dock strike took place in Southampton, England, September, 1890.

The closing years of the 1880s saw a resurgence of trade unionism amongst merchant seamen, dockers and other unskilled workers. A notable victory was scored by London dockers during the famous London dock strike in 1889, in which the dockers were able to win a rate of 6d, known colloquially as the 'dockers' tanner'. Later that year, a branch of the Dockers' Union was formed in Southampton. In part this was an effort by the union to prevent Southampton men being used to break strikes in London, as had occurred on a limited basis during the 1889 strike. However, as the local branch grew, pressure mounted to improve wages in Southampton itself and to win the dockers' tanner[clarification needed] for Southampton men.

Towards the end of August, the Southampton Dock Company and the various shipping firms agreed to grant wage increases of 1d an hour. However, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, which paid lower rates than the other principal firms, refused to bring its rates into line with the other companies. All of the employers, meanwhile, refused to grant official recognition to the Dockers' Union and the National Union of Seamen. Because of these two issues, a strike was declared on 7 September. Unlike the London Dock Strike, the strike in Southampton was marked by a certain amount of public disorder. Blacklegs from Portsmouth arriving at the railway station were attacked and large crowds gathered daily in the streets around the docks and, leading to fears of rioting. In response the Mayor requested assistance from the Home Office.

Funnily enough I've seen all of that before, apart from the bits about Southampton men being used to break strikes. The original versions referred to only the Portsmouth blacklegs strikebreaking in Southampton. It's literally a re-write by a Skate to muddy the waters with a few words changed to re-apportion blame and imply some truth to the SCUM story. Ironically the best online resource for debunking this Portsmyth is a Skate fan site.

Short answer: Anyone can edit Wikipedia.

Nope. They qualified for the competition during the period when the group stage was groups of 5, only playing each team once. I remember they got battered away at Wolfsburg, drew at home with Milan and beat a not-particularly-famous Dutch side (Heerenveen, perhaps?), must have lost their other away game as well as they didn't get through.

They lost 3-2 to Wolfsburg and got stuffed 3-0 by the mighty Braga, a town slightly larger than Eastleigh. And yes, they beat Heerenveen at home. Amusingly they also scraped past Guimaraes over two legs to qualify for the group stage to begin with, which meant that in two of their three aways they went to two places under 20 miles apart. :D

I see. As opposed to closing the corners of the ground when we were heading for Admin in the Championship (and still got crowds bigger than they were getting in the Premier League), and the widespread practice of closing entire stands for early stages of poxy cup games (like the JPT, topically enough) which loads of teams do.

That's inconvenient, beating Rovers in the cup. The template must be really confused. Only a couple of days ago 'cup runs' were a distraction. How can the template now claim an historic, plucky, battling victory which will see them march defiantly on to the next round? Or is it just 'selective' cups that are a distraction?

Ahh, it's a league format. Shows how much I've been following it. [emoji5]

Meanwhile Saints U21s got through to the next round without kicking a ball, as the bottom two teams in the group drew with each other and even the bonus point for a penalty win didn't catch either of them up. It'll be a fun night tomorrow as the Saints U21s and the team on top of the group kick the ball sideways for an hour and a half in a near-empty stadium, that's for sure. I do hope missing this one doesn't impact on my chances of a Round of 32 Europa League ticket... :D

Amongst other things - it ****es me off that they are so **** we rarely get to ****ing play them anymore.

What's the ****ing point of a derby if you never play them.

Arrange an end of season nasty.

Oh dear lord no. Used to think like that but now it's far funnier to have them where they are, they are far more frustrated than they would be if they had a chance to play us in any competition. The longer this goes on, the better it gets and the more far fetched become their arguments that they are somehow better than us.

So, let's recap. Saints are currently still in 4 cup competitions, and the Skates are in ... zero.

So sad. But at least they can now concentrate on trying to finish in a 4th division playoff spot.

The good news is that they've signed a new striker from the seventh division, who will join them in January to spearhead their charge up the leagues.

The funniest thing about this is that their fans take pride in saying we haven't beaten them for 14 years. They can't see the stupidity of that boast.

Perhaps its the times we live in. The truth appears to be, for many of them, an irrelevant distraction because for them "debate is framed largely by appeals to emotion disconnected from the details of policy, and by the repeated assertion of talking points to which factual rebuttals are ignored. Post-truth differs from traditional contesting and falsifying of truth by rendering it of "secondary" importance."

We know their finances are still in trouble and won't improve while the PST contributes next to nothing and deters other investment. Perhaps breaking point is close again.
