Murty ... Fat, unfit, and off the pace?

Yes he looked a bit unfit - isn't that what these games are for? I thought his distribution was quite good and he read things quite well. I think that he needs to be given a proper chance to prove his worth. We need a right back and he would certainly be an improvement on the out of position right back that played most of last season. IMO of course.

Clearly his fitness is lacking at the moment but he did enough to suggest he'd be a worthwhil signing IMO. Given that we don't have a single other right back, it would be mad not to snap him up.

+1. Terrific signing imo, every other League 1 club would snap him up in an INSTANT, as should we.

No problem with him at all.

Just hope that knee injury isn't worse than it looked. I saw the challenge very clearly and the knee definitily flexed the wrong way. I thought it was stretcher time and was surprised when he jumped up. However, 5 minutes later and he was not moving well at all and was subbed.

He was clearly unfit but did enough both in how he played and his communication with team mates, especially with Lallana, to show he would be a good signing. I think the injury was because he's unfit but desperate to show he's worth a contract. It would have made sense to take him off at half time.

Very similar performance at the Cheltenam match on Tuesday - looked quite good in the first half, but ran out of steam after ten minutes in the second half. The only difference was in the Ajax match he took a heavy tackle early on in the second half, and asked to be substituted.

If fit, I am sure he would be a useful addition for us in League 1.

One major mixup with KD nearly caused a goal but Murty did look as though he knew what to do. Apart from his lack of fitness he did fairly well until crocked in the second half. With him, Thomas, Perry and Fish we might have a half decent back four. He won't have much life left in him but even a season would help at the moment.

I'm sure he'll be getting fitness in and hell be a good player to have in league 1. All players deserve a chance to prove themselves i hope we keep Euell, i dont think he is as bad as people make him out to be.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes Euell !! Also glad that the concensus seems to be it is not surprising Murty is unfit at present. Deserves a chance at least given all that has happened and as bpsaint said he did miss the tail end of last season. Judge him when he is fit, a very reasonable approach I'm sure most would agree.

I think he is worth hanging on to. He is clearly not fit, which is worrying, but if AP can sort that out ne could make a good leader in the back four which has been missing. But he's 32 (?), can he get the right level of fitness back at that age?

MURTY, yesterday didn't impress me, seemed too fat, too unfit, and always a yard off the pace. Dont know if that is his usual 'condition' but seemed to know where he should be and what he should be doing, just always never quite made it.

After a holiday break, like many others, he is untrained and unfit.

---so what's new ? Give him a chance.

Mid July and not match fit - disgraceful.

Though it's disappointing that a seasoned pro has allowed himself to get this out of shape. Hopefully a solid few weeks of pre-season will get him back where he should be. Potentially a good signing, especially at this level.

First half, I thought Murty was one of our best players (ok, all relative I know!)....he was actually talking to and marshalling the players around him....and had a great awareness and reading of the game (I was sitting in the second row near the player's tunnel so could see his game at close quarters.)

A classic example of him reading what was going to happen next was just before one of Ajax's goals. Murty had overlapped down the right wing but the killer pass wasn't forthcoming (surprise, surprise!)....so he turned around, looked back at the next passage of play and screamed at Lallana to track back to intercept their left winger as he sensed that was where Ajax would counter attack. Lallana was slow to react to Murty's instructions and as a result didn't get back in time to make a tackle. If he'd read the game as intelligently as Murty was reading it then he'd have had a chance of preventing the goal.

Ok, yes, fitness is an issue at the moment but once fit I can see Murty being a great asset to a League 1 team.

a defender defending, whatever next? The wheel??

Full backs need to attack, too. James did pretty well as a defender, but added something going forward. Think of Jermaine Wright - pretty competent at full back but the only time he crossed the halfway line was half-time.

Agree although many on here seem critical it was really noticable that how much Lloyd James got caught out and outpaced when he went to right back, Murty looked much more solid, and had much better postional sense and wasn't even 100% fit.

From what is saw the issue wasnt right back it was our left back position that had real problems especially in the 2nd half.

At left back we were all over the place, it improved after mills moved back there. but cant think of anyone in our squad that can feel that role if mills is going to play further up field.

but then again we wont be playing teams of the quality of alax every week.

not worried about his fitness. I'm sure Pardew will have them doing a bleep test this week so we'll know where we stand, but I'm more concerned about the lack of height in the side. A back four of Mills, Murty, Thomas and Perry is going to be a liability on set peices especialyl when they have Lallana, Gillett, James, Thomson and Saga to help them out.

I just saw on SSN that it is Murty's testimonial for Reading tonight at the Madejski.

Indeed. I did post that last week, but you are forgiven for not reading every post on here. :-)

For our irregular readers, I work on Green Park, in the shade of the Madejski. Murty is on the teamsheet so I don't think his injury is too bad. He may even have come off on Saturday to save himself.

8pm kickoff. Be here or be square!

im glad we are putting players down after being beaten by AJAX...

To be honest its nothing to do with the fact we were beaten by ajax. Murty was without doubt poor on saturday and this in the main was down to the fact he was over weight as pro's go and had little pace which meant he couldn't get back once he had made a mistake. You only had to look over to the left back slot to see how a player with a little pace could get back and make a saving tackle (step forward mr mills). Its not putting Murty down its just pure fact as seen by everyone who went to the game =] Can only get better though stick him on some hardcore WGS style trainning and he could be a useful squad player.

Although I do agree Murty looked off the pace on saturday, I also think he showed a couple of nice touches and just needs some games

tbf even if he only plays a hanful of games I think he's well worth signing up anyway. He wont ask for much and would be a leader for the younger lads and a good influence around the club in general

Murty ... Fat, unfit, and off the pace?

Definitely. But still so much better than James at rb for much of last season.

Agree totally. Only started losing his man or making obvious fluffs once his puff ran out. Surprised it took them so long to replace him after that.
