Interesting to see no number 7 yet. Dare we hope Pards has someone in mind who would be a fitting wearer of that shirt?

Or is it just that someone with a worrying command of counting did the allocations?

Is there a reason why Saga is number 4? I like an organised squad and it annoys me as number 4 should be reserved for a defender. In fact I feel so strongly that I now hope we get rid of saga ASAP so that a defender can have the number instead.

It would look more 'even' if Wotton and Saga swapped numbers.

Lallana would have been an obvious candidate for 'promotion' to No.7 IMHO.

More or less confirms he's on his way?

Promotion to No7???

No7 at this club needs to be EARNED.

Too many since MLT have been 'given' it...only to tarnish it.

Lallana with his Billy Big Balls attitude does not deserve that shirt....you think you're good enough for the Prem sunshine? Got to show you're good enough for the CCC yet....

I have to say I am really pleased that Simon has been given the number 8 shirt, I have seen him play a lot over the last few years in the reserves and always thought he was the kind of player our first team lacked, I am looking forward to seeing him progress this season.

However, the squad as a whole seems incredibly thin on numbers and talent.

Or, indeed, Div 3.

Looking through this I counted only 21 that would get anywhere near the first team squad, and three quarters of these aren't good enough for League 1. But what do I know?

Boy, have they got to prove themselves.

When we get 7 essential players in, we'll have a squad of 40.

I agree, I thought that 'back in the day' of propper numbers the number 4 was traditionally a defensive midfielder. I think Jimmy Case wore 4.

Yeah, those two should definitely swap. I thought the same 2 years ago when we signed Saga and Wright was #10.

Looking at that squad, Pulis and Molyneux are the only two I really want rid of. The rest is just about bringing players in. At least 10 of them.

For me the number 4 was always either worn by a "libero" or the teams best midfield passer.

Glen Hoddle wore 4 for years...........

Saga wears 4 cos it was the only 1-11 unallocated when he signed. As he's a striker and lots of people had his number on their shirt he didn't change it.

Didn't seem to bother us with Svensson, Baird, Skacel, Viafara, Idiakez, Bialkowski, Gillett, etc. though.

Harding 3 and Thomas 6 would have made more sense, not that it really matters.

Indeed, back in the days when numbers where first introduced the formation was 2-3-5 with the full backs having the numbers 2 (right) and 3 (left), the centre half (now a centre back) having number 5, between the other two half backs (4 and 6).

When the centre half moved back to the defensive line, his number went with him, so with a 4-4-2 it became (from right to left):

2 5 6 3

7 4 8 11

9 10

I'd like to see the squad numbers allocated alphabetically, like the Argies did in the 78 World Cup.

With the assistance of Soccerbase, Excel and me chucking in the unlisted players : Bart being number 1 instead of Ossie Ardiles isn't anything like as much fun though, though Kelvin in the number 3 shirt is quite stupid enough. Bit rubbish when we sign someone and they either amend everyone else's number or get bolted on the end though - not a problem in a fixed size World Cup squad. PS I think Holland did it too (except for Cruyff) and I thought we were avoiding all Dutchness ?

1 Bartosz Bialkowski (G)

2 Jack Boyle (M)

3 Kelvin Davis (G)

4 Ryan Doble (M)

5 Tommy Forecast (G)

I am pleased to see Simon Gillett get the number 8 shirt. At the moment he the only CM deserving of a place in the starting 11.

I am also hoping that the absence of anyone having the 6 and 7 shirts is an indication that a big lump of a CB and an attack minded midfielder are coming in.

Also, if Saga does leave that will free up the 4 for another incoming CM. Ditto with Rasiak and the 9 for a fwd.

Masinga wore number 4 for South Africa. I thought it was odd then.

6 & 7 being kept free gives me hope! Surely that means they have some decent lads who've already proved themselves in mind, that will go straight into the first team?

The fact that 6, 7, 12, and 16 are open certainly seems to hint at new signings planned to fill those numbers. Also, surely 4 and 9 will become vacant before very long: or does anyone really expect Rasiak and/or Saga to stay? So those numbers seem to me to hint at 5 or 6 more players coming in over the next few weeks, if all goes well. Here's hoping!
