Chalrton v Saints Post Match 1-1

exit2

Good result, frustrating 2nd half though. Wish we could have shown a bit more ambition from about 50mins onwards, as we juts sat back as soon as they equalized.

I'll wait for the comments from the away guys before judging too much though - but it sounds like we were reasonable, pretty even game with all considered.

For all those pessimists out there (I know, not many) but we were playing the top of the table team and a team who are probably going up this season. They have won all their games so far this season and we managed to draw 1-1.

Still lots to build on but on this performance I'm happy that we'll stay up this year in League One and may even be in the top 10 at the end of the season.

As I posted in the other thread which is closed, really hope we put our subs on earlier next game if we're in with a chance to steal it.

PS Really looking forward to next weekends game - not least because my daughter is seven on Saturday and attending her first ever game at St Mary's. COYR! :)

It's really nice to hear some sensible people posting on here for a change. Agree with everyone v good point.

Would have been happy with a point before, but after the first half we should have moved on and looked for a second instead of sitting back. Then in the last 20 we were crying out for some pace and he left Waigo on the bench and put Mellis on. 2 points dropped.

Or maybe no points gained.

If Waigo was a world beater he would not be playing for us

Seems strange to say it against such in form opposition, but it just feels with positive substitutions in the 2nd half we could have got them on the back foot again and beaten them.

Add that to the shambolic last kick of the game draw at Stockport an extra 4 points and things would have looked alot rosier (won't even mention the 2 dropped last week )

4 league games unbeaten and only 16 off the play offs onwards and upwards.

Couldn't get to the game today,at least a point, the Solent/Player commentary was very poor, could someone who went today rate the players 1-10 and should Adam be taking the corners ,from what I have seen previously he shouldn't,but goal should give him confidence, also your view on late substitutions today..sounded too late to make a difference. Thanks

I forecast (to my better half) 1-1 at 2.30 and I'm more than happy to get a point.

My Prediction League prediction was 1-1 ... pity there aren't any Ladbrokes out here :D

Hmmm .... Yeovil next week ... we all know/think we should be stuffing teams like this, especially at home... 1-1 is already sounding likely again  ... bollix to that next week we finally click ...4-0 at least.

Hmmm ... The Old Speckled Hen is going down well ;)

On the plus side, good to see Schneiderlin playing a ful 90, hopefully he can move on from this and put in a top performance next week!!! Jaidi must start, he sounded very composed when he came on, just what wee need to start attacks. Someone that has the ability to step in, control the ball and lay it off to a midfield player(like Rio does for Utd) Mills sounded lively on the left and they needed to kick him up in the air to stop him. We will win next week if PArdew makes the right selection and subs. Bringing mellis on was a crap call when Waigo was on the bench, and Holmes, and out and out winger.

A tough game against a team who are riding on the crest of a wave, we have the millstone of -10 to add to our approach which must be playing on the players minds fearing a loss is not forward movement. That was probably the hardest point we have won listening to the commentary. I have a feeling inside that we are going to meander to the zero points mark before we get a win........................... Its the kind of thing Saints would do.

From pre-match thread....

Why are we not starting with papa after the os has raved about them all week! He's what we've been crying out for! Come on you saints!

Fret ye not. Pardew will bring him on for the last 5 minutes regardless of the score.... ;-)

Well, at least I got something right....

Agree that the team needs Jaidi and Waigo and that a draw was better than I expected before the match, but in the end Pardew was too cautious. There was no point having Jaidi and Waigo on the bench if he wasn't going to use them but the 76th minute was very late to bring on Jaidi, and as for not bringing on Waigo until the 90th, that was just pointless, except to waste time for the draw, when he should have brought him on with 15 mins or 20 mins to go for the win. Despite being a good result, in the end it was disapointing because it could have been better.

Cracking game played well and really troubled the league leaders at times! Very positive play and I thought jaidi was great wheN he came on COYR's.

Annoys me all these fans who weren't there getting the knifes and being pessimistic, if we play like that every week we will be in the playoffs imo.

On the one hand, good to get a point away at the league's top team.

On the other hand, we surrendered a lead, AGAIN; and we failed to score more than 1 goal, AGAIN!

A basic point: if we cannot score more than once in a game, and if we continue to give up goals after getting ahead, we will not win many matches this season, and will likely go down again.

These issues HAVE to get sorted. We MUST learn to take more chances & score more goals; we MUST learn to defend a lead more effectively.

There are positives to take from this performance, but in the end only one positive counts: points from wins, and we are still not getting those. On to Yeovil, I guess ... let's hope these issues get sorted.

Excellent result......... its a slow process but frankly 90% plus fans would have taken a draw at Charlton when the fixture list came out.......so its a good sign that things are moving in the right direction..........hopefully get a win before the end of September........and off the bottom by January

Pleased.

Like many I am trying not to consider the possibility of a relegation battle. We often talk about the team needing to break out of a losing mentality but we as fans need to think our our own psychology too!

Hopefully Mister Holmes will turn out to be the missing link on the wing, but it's a gamble. Pardew may well need to get at least one more loan signing in.

I know others disagree but 1-1 is a decent result at the Valley (especially given Charlton had won 6 out of 6 prior to this match).

Good result in the end - must stop falling apart in the 2nd half. Subs on earlier next time please AP.

(& poopy lost :) )

Agree with Minsk and a fair observation from Tractor. A very slow but, hopefully, sure improvement

Seeing Skatesmuff bottom of The Prem and watched by a massive 17500 or so adds to the feel good (or maybe feeling better) vibe I'm getting as each week passses.

Cliche ville Arizona I know, but I feel our season really is just beginning now. 4 games unbeaten, okay dropped points in games we should have won at Stockport and 10 mqn Colchester and also the mighty Brentford at home!! But today we took the game for half the game to the in form team away from home.

Hopefully despite the disappointment of letting yet another leaad slip out of our grasp the players will be feeling much more positive and hopefully Yeovil will be on the end of the proverbial "somebody is due a thrashing from us"" :p

Also a lol moment whilst scanning thru the results somebody with the name of Goodwillie scored against Celtic today. Somebody please tell me his first name is either Ivor or Roger :D

On paper, and before the game, I look at taking a point from (away at) the top of the league side (who had 6 wins from 6) as a good result; and after the game, I still see it as a good point.

Though it is slightly disappointing when considering the events of the 90 minutes, that after putting in a very good first half performance and leading at the break, to come out and do the usual, conceding so early into the second period.

Whilst I prefer to see us playing in a straight 4-4-2, I could understand Pardew's selection of the five man midfield, as JJ Shelvey plays off Burton in the 'hole', and clearly Lloyd James was asked to sit in there to stop him finding space to make things happen.

In the first half, that tactic worked well for us, though in the second, it was clear that Charlton had worked out ways to get around it; and we should then really have made our own changes as we were coming under increasing pressure as the half went on.

Jaidi's composure seemed to help us a great deal when he came on, though the introduction of Jacob Mellis was very surprising. I imagine Fish Mills must've been feeling the effects of three very hard challenges in short succession, otherwise can't see why he came off as he was playing very well for us. Even so, why Mellis on and not Papa Waigo or Lee Holmes?

Over all though, whilst disappointing to lose another lead, a point at Charlton is still a decent result.

Still happy with our progress in the sense of the team beginning to improve performance-wise and develop an understanding, though that happiness will become tempered somewhat if we fail to beat Yeovil. If we can (and we should) do that, I feel that we'll start to put some wins together and climb the table.

Mellis did well actually, finding space with his pace, and put in a couple of decent crosses.

As for Papa, impossible to tell if he will be any good from his cameo today.

Mills was having a good game though, which is why he kept getting kicked off the ball.

Harding played well and got a few kicks for his trouble as well.
