Fish Mills

I thought Mills was comfortably our Man of Pre Season, he scored two or three goals I think, and was looking very impressive, I thought he'd feature a lot more. People seemed to have given him a fair bit of stick when he played in midfeild, but I've felt he is very good there as well.

Good news and means we have competition in every position now.

Funny that Lambert played 90 mins and Barnard went off though... I thought the idea was to give Lambo a rest?

Maybe a possibilty that his fitness standard is not quite as good as Lamberts?

Would be my thoughts considering how much fitter Lambert is now than when he joined from Bristol Rovers, I could be wrong though.

Totally agree - he was stand-out in the friendlies.

As horrible as it is for every football fan to sit and watch, Lambert gives us a target to aim at for the long ball and so is effective for seeing games out.

This is probably the reason for barnard to come off..

I must admit, i am a little worried we have not got a big brute as cover for Lambo, if he gets injured i will be worried

Fish was quality - and if anything improved in the second half. First half he was quick to get forward, but sometimes lost his positioning.

Loved the one-two with Holmes' back heel. Shame it came to nothing, but just so great to see some imaginative football.

Funny how people read a game. I didn't think Mills was great tbh. He was ok, but his distribution was average to poor and sometimes lost his positioning. Did grow into game though and didn't seem to need so much looking after by Perry in the second half as he had in the first. But to be fair to him, he's not had much of a sniff at first team football this season and I think his performance today reflected that a bit. He'll grow into a good LB and will challenge Harding for the rest of the season which gives us good competition in that area which we've needed.

From where I was stood -on the hard shoulder just outside Ilminster - he didn't do a lot wrong.

Mills was excellent today, he showed an awful lot of promise and I think Pardew has a dilemma on his hands here. One minor criticism though is his passing, he was too quick to hoof the ball up the left flank towards Holmes when there were other options available. Apart from that though, fantastic game from the lad.

amazing performance considering how few games he has got this season. Always rated him and so glad we managed to get him on a contract before Scunny stole him. Shame he is not right footed. Harding will have to keep his level high.

really pleased to hear he did well.

it was his big chance against MK Dons in midweek, he did pretty well i thought and took his chance with both hands. - pard's has been openly critical of him, saying that he's worried about his progress and may have to look to loan him.

but he's shown the right response and a great attitude to put himself right in the frame again. He's always had talent, that's why man u were looking at him 4 years ago when he was a youth player.

at left midfield he's looked uncomfortable, at left back he looks, er, comfortable.

100% agree, did n't rate him at all at left mid and was quite disparing to him but starting to wonder if we may have unearthed another potential bridgey. I thought he was great today, and was very impressed by his tackling and work. Could work out well for us this

I thought he was very impressive, the thing I like about him is that like Lloyd James when his opportunity has arrived he has grasped it with both hands and is making Pardew's decision to drop him harder ever moment that he is on the pitch.

When you compare both of them to that useless pile of skin, fluid, and bones that was BWP who had numerous chances to bed himself into the team Fish & James show the kind of attitude that we as supporters like to see from our players.

He was a bit dodgy in the first half. Most of Ipswich's chances were created from his side. I thought however he was excellent in the second half. He went forward well and was a rock in defence.

I hope he stays in the team for the Brentford game. I am an admirer of Harding and think he is the better bet at left back. But he deserves a rest and AP should keep Mills in the team for the next few matches. A bit of competition for the left back slot will do us no harm.

We were discussing this earlier on in the pub. It's so refreshing to see a player, who was harshly taken off 15 minutes after being subbed on a few games ago, come back into the side and play in such a positive manner. I thought that may have been the last time we saw Fish. After playing so well in pre-season and turning down an offer from a team in a higher division, it would have beeen very easy for the guy to spit the dummy and ask for a move this month (there would be PLENTY of clubs interested). But he didn't, and has truely grabbed his chance with both hands. How many players in last years squad would have done the same? Skacel? BWP? Saganowski? Would they ****! I hope he manages to keep his place in the first XI.

If you're reading this Fish, you have won yourself a lot of admirers over the past month. I truely hope you are a member of our squad for many years to come.

I'm thinking that we're really developing some quality in depth in the squad. Credit Fish for the fact we haven't missed Harding in his absence & Holmes for adding balance & flair (if not speed..although once he outstripped someone!) to the left side.

If we can keep everyone happy it bodes very well for the number of games that are looming ahead....It's a great feeling being a Saints fan right now - just driven 250 miles with a smile on my face (got bigger when Beckford spoiled Bagpuss's day) :-)

iirc he was also a member of our youth team that lost to (I think) Ipswich the other year in the 2 legged final.

If I'm right, then fair play to the lad for hanging around and showing loyalty and above all patience.

I know he gets put in the LB position, but isn't he a more orthodox midfielder? That could work well with Dan overlapping from behind him.

Holmes provided very little cover in front off Mills, failed to track his runners and seemed unwillingly to lay the ball back to Mills to cross it when he had nowhere to go himself and Mills was in space

Holmes also lacks the stature and pace to play at this level

Left midfield was a real weak spot yesterday

Didnt think he was upto the standard we needed, but after that performance, Harding has to be worried.

The bar has been raised, which can only be good for the team.

Well Done Joseph Mills.

Maybe he will become the third great player to play at left back with the surname Mills.
