Its not a case of only having only the money for one anymore, so we want BOTH Today simply confirmed that Antonio is better than Papa, and it's hard to see how there is any debate about this! I don't mind Papa at all and love him for his crucial goals in the JPT run, but he isn't as quick as Antonio, can't beat a man like Antonio, and crosses probably about as well/poorly as Antonio! Yeah would be good to have them both, but if I had to choose one then there's no question!

RobM Posted 24 April, 2010 Share Posted 24 April, 2010 yeah, but once again, why do we have to choose one ? I'm with you on this one... we should be aiming to keep the core of our squad as they are now and I don't see any reason why we need to prioritise anyone over anyone else. If promotion is the ambition for next year and the 5-year plan is worth sticking to, then maximum effort should be put into keeping both Waigo and Antonio. We also need to clear out some deadwood, strengthen in some key areas (midfield general and RB) and ideally get everyone in place and ready to have a great pre-season. We have the resources to do all of this with ease.

Reading took him recently from non league Tooting and Mitcham then farmed him out to Cheltenham Town for 8 games before loaning him to us. the people who should be getting any readies is the team that he played for from the age of 12 in London who were a feeder club for Richmond Borough! Wes Tender Posted 24 April, 2010 Share Posted 24 April, 2010 I would love to see us keep both Antonio and Papa. They both add something desirable to the team. The majority of the team is in place and it only needs somebody of the quality of Harding to fill the RB slot and the box to box midfield general to complete the team. Increasingly it looks as if we have some good players coming through the youth ranks and they can be blooded gradually as and when they are thought to be ready, so we might be seeing more of them by two thirds of the way through next season, in matches where we have a good lead. Turkish Posted 24 April, 2010 Share Posted 24 April, 2010 If you saw Antonio earlier this season people will realise how much he has come, he really hasd developed since he has been with us and at his age can only continue to improve and if he is out of contract at Reading available for nowt so a steal. Papa is decent, clearly loves it here but it depends on £££, if they want £250k+ IMO there is better available. i like him think he has done well but depends on how much Fiorentina want for him, hopefully the deal will include a friendly out there as i'd love an excuse to visit Florence. Me too! A hack down the autostrada or more likely getting the cheapo trains here. A visit to the Uffizi Gallery, a quick apperitivo (or two), and then off to see the Saints. Dream on! Even better, I play for a women's football team with the same colours as Fiorentina. Time for bed as I'm on the bench for tomorrow...

He's under 24 so Reading do have some sort of say. If they go and offer him a contract and Antonio turns it down so he can accept a contract elsewhere (us hopefully!) then we have to come to some sort of agreement over a fee. I guess we'd be speaking to them to persuade them not to offer a contract, not that it matters financially to us
Window Cleaner Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 not that it matters financially to us Although I'm not sure that throwing money around without limit is NC's scene. Gordon Mockles Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 (edited) All sounds good, and today showed that Antonio would be a much wiser signing than Waigo. Antonio is fast and got in great positions and netted 2 goals, whereas waigo played poor passes and seemed to keep giving away needless free-kicks. Huh?! What is it with Waigo & his detractors?! Some love him, for many he can't do right. Whilst I'm a firm fan of both (loved Antonio's bit of twisting trickery down the left flank between 2 or 3 Carlisle players). I hate it when short sighted fans watch certain players with blinkers. Not saying you were particularly critical Nexstar & not wishing to over-react, but I had to endure 90 mins of stupid fan syndrome & wouldn't mind a small rant. We had 2 new idiots sat behind us in Chapel absolutely slaughtering Waigo from start to finish (as well as constantly swearing & shouting "c*nt" infront of kids sat around them - no need). Kept berating him, jeering him to f*ck off back to Fiorentina, consantly peddling the offside mantra despite me not noticing any offsides given against him in this particular game. Complete brainless weapons, the pair of em. They even discussed signing Antonio rather than Papa cos he had pace...& what does Papa do, moonwalk? One cross was poor & the keeper caught it & that had them frothing at the mouth. Antonio was my MOTM but he often makes mistakes but they he couldn't do wrong to them. Were they aware we wouldn't have the JPT if it not for Waigo. Countless assists. Vital goals & (like Antonio) match changing substitution appearances. Luckily, beer was more important than football & they missed the 1st goal (& assist by Papa via a clipped defensive header). Come 2nd half, they were back at it, shouting sub him (not in such polite terms) & throwing a paddy at every touch...although mute on every completed pass (& his through balls are generally pin point). I didn't think he had a bad game. A few mistakes & free kicks given away (made me laugh, weakest player on the pitch penalised for being over physical yet Lambert, the strongest, is literally laddered & man handled every game & the ref gives nothing...bar this game, first time in ages) but he's no Paul Wotton. Papa made the first goal & nice to see him play the entire match. Anyway, commented to my mate "yeah, sub him! Don't want him setting up anymore goals". What bugged me most, he knocked a few decent passes through & they went all quiet. Any mistouch, THEY'RE OFF! Annoying to hear. Antonio had a much better game, I admit. Both good talents. Both genuinely pacey (I'd say Papa being quicker). Both great determination/good on & off field attitude. Both fairly raw talent which has visibly improved over the season. Both I'd like to keep. I think they'll both be great assets next season. Rant over. Sorry, had to say my bit. I think the level of Papa Waigo's criticism is unfair by some & vastly OTT. He does seem to split opinion. I think most of us are pretty confident based on our form this season - which lets me honest, in any normal season we'd be in a top 2 place, i'm sure of it. So with more quality to come in the summer to add to this current lot, it would take a **** up of monumental proportions to miss out.

Totally agree, Gemmel - AP is an impressive Manager and his interviews are always worth listening to - insightful, genuine and without cliche. Funnily enough he reminds me a little of Nigel P. in his interview style and as a man worthy of respecting and trusting. As you say, if the form guide is anything to go by we should emulate Leicester 12 months ago and Norwich this year when the new season begins. Like others though, I worry about the Tuesday nights on bog grounds and against opposition intent only on spoiling and negating open football. Over a long season it is hard to break them down week after week, but that is what we will have to do. A lot depends on who comes in in the close season. I am sure there will be a clear out but players coming in will be crucial. There is no reason why we shouldn't be one of the favourites to go up next year but you are right, it will be tough! Simples, keep the ball on the ground so that they can't win it 50% of the time and hoof it up into our half to give themselves a breather. As Man U and Chelsea show us every week if you keep at sides all the time they will eventually crack.Once you give them a sniff of the ball by punting it up into the air they get a bit of a breather. We have to stop punting it up to Lambert because good as he is in the air he only wins it just over half of the time.I just watched a bit of the second half against Orient (bit behind in my watching-far too nice outside to stay in). They hoof, Fonte gets the ball, passes it out left to Seaborne who hoofs it up into the far left corner for Lambert to head down, it's like groundhog day, time after time after time, then we switch it on the ground out to the right, Puncheon puts in a good deep cross, headed back across goal for Lallana to score. Spot on the money with this observation. However, there is another failing tactic and that is that the team pass it around SO much that they run out of ideas, there's not enough movement off the ball and then we lose possession when someone is caught napping or the final pass is poor. It's great trying to compare us to top Prem teams, but the simple fact is that the players we have just are not skilled enough to do this all the time. League One dictates that we hoof to Lambo's head and hope for knock-downs. Not saying it's good or that it always works, it's just the way of lower league football. Let's face it, the youngsters played some lovely football under the Dutch regime, but won very few games.
