Nope early 80's...have not seen any Saints football since to match it.

Keegan, Channon, Ball, Williams, Moran, Shilton, Wright, Watson, Mills, Armstrong was superb time to watch.

isnt fair that the best Saints team in my time was the 2006 play off semi's team, and you got to see that lot. Dont know why I ****ing bother.

I have been privileged to watch Saints through the mid to late 60s, 70s and 80s, what I would give to see some of players of that time run out a SMS today, with some of them in the side it would be be the only time I would say we will walk this league.

Yes I agree if we had Terry Paine and John Sydenham from the old Third Division days we would be real promotion contenders

The seventies for me - but was that the excitement of the football or the fact every week it was your sole aim not to get a good kicking every week?

I'll never know it's all too long ago - but there were some golden moments in that era - relegation, promotion, FA Cup League Cup & who could forget the Keegan signing?

The early eighties were fantastic too - solid 1st Division side.

The nineties passed me by - like so many thinks with ayoung family...but the last few years (noughties) have had some great moments in the lower leagues - but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Anyway the football might not be as good - but the away crowds are certainly better.

70's and 80's we were a different class to the 90's. That said I enjoyed a lot about the 90's. Obviously their was Le Tiss, but I enjoyed the rest in a funny sort of way. We had players who gave their all and really cared for the club. Even the Branfoot era had some great memories, from Barry Horne's strikes against Bolton, to Le Tiss against Newcastle.

The best time of the 90's was Bally's 18 months in charge, winning at Newcastle, his first home game in the snow, and obviously Le Tiss in his prime.West Ham away last game of the season was one of the best games I've been to and then the following season we played some pretty decent stuff.

I'd agree, more consistently travel these days but the best away trips I've ever had were in the 70s/80s. The difference today is it's far easier to travel and unlike the 70s/80s it's relatively safe to do so now. As you mentioned it was very likely you would encounter trouble back then which put many of the more sensitive types off from travelling on a regular basis.

Saints could take away a great crowd one week and then, for no apparent reason, considerabley less the next. But big games, particularly in the cup, thousands could travel, many on the old football specials, we had 10k on the road on a number of occasions. When it was good it was fantastic!

taking a quick break at work, 90's were decent era for me, enjoyed my football more I think.

Few notable entries :

The Career of Le Tissier.

Winning away at Man Utd in the cup 1992 on pens

Barry Horne's screamer v Bolton

Terracing.

Last day survivals

Branfoot

Going to Wembley in the ZDS

Beating big teams regularly at the Dell, United 96, 97, 98 - we are the last team to beat them 3 years in a row on our home ground.

Pirate Paul's unofficial merchandise stand on the Milton Road

1990 FA Cup run (3-1 away spurs)

Playing 4-2-4 with Shearer, Rideout, Wallace and Le Tiss

a "Top-flight" featuring teams like Wimbledon, Luton and crowds of 4k

The early days of sky tv were quite funny, remember Man Utd at home on a monday, think Dion Dublin scored for them, dancing girls and fireworks

Rubbish PONY kits

Doesn't it annoy everyone how Sky go on about "since the start of the premier league" like football never existed before 1992. It drives me nuts.

Do you remember watching "the big match" on itv? I recall Man City away about 1991 1-0 Dowie header.

as far as sky are concerned no stats exist prior to 1992.

other general football memories from the 90s

the arsenal north bank mural, that was called racist as had no black faces.

the demise of the once great old grounds to be replaced with souless stadia

Blackburn winning the league.

Leeds winning the league with Howard Wilkinson as manager.

Eric Cantona

Italian football being the best, watching channel 4 every sunday

:lol::lol: I had forgotten about that.

Remember that game v Man City, V dull game.

Blackburn were the Man City of mid 90's, nice to see a club of that size winning the league looking back though.

Other memories

CArlton Palmer, Keith Curle, Geoff Thomas and Andy Sinton all playing for England

Half time entertainment being bands miming on the pitch, remember Curiosity Killed the Cat at the Dell once on a night game.

Horrendous kits, the blue away one c92 which looked like a bird had sh*t all over it and the yellow and blue striped away one.

Man Utd being full of brilliant young English players and built around Cantona

A sit in after the Oldham (?) home game in protest at Branfoot

Some good calls there pal, I enjoyed the 90s, plenty of good football and loads of good times watching Saints, stand outs have to be the various relegation escapes and regularly turning over bigger teams at home.

Standing in the East Archers and piling down the aisle between blocks 4 and 5 when Saints scored, good times.

The 90's

Saints constantly fighting to survive

The beginning of the regular change of manager

Small, tight shorts going

shirt numbers 1-11 at an end

The back pass rule is introduced

The end of Saint and Greavsie (Football focus never matched it)

Graham Taylors laughable reign as England boss

Alan Hansen becoming a pundit and never giving saints any praise, even if they won.

I'm with you 110% Turkish. Like the bastards invented something by simply re-naming it, and history didn't exist beforehand.

The nineties were Branfoot, cup exits to the likes of Port Vale, lowest crowds, Le Tiss and Hoddle where I think we went about 5 games in a row in the prem not conceding. Also had Shipperley, Watson, Brucies brown envelopes and great escapes, not my era as grew up watching in the 70's good times and bad but no relegation

1990s

Going to away grounds and virtually NEVER seeing a sell out.

Beating Pompey comfortably in the FA Cup 1996

Getting beaten by lower league clubs a number of times on the cup, port vale, shrewsbury, STOCKPORT in the 1/4 final of the league cup

That small away terrace at Goodison

Standing at Plough Lane

Maine Road

highbury

Crowd of under 9k at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea away 1992

What better way to start the 90s that beating Charlton away 4-2 at Selhurst Park

Highfield Road

Winning 5-4 away at Norwich.

90s was great being a saint

we had the best player in the country if not the world playing for us every week

Franny launching players into which ever stand was the closest & scoring yes I did happen

Doddsey hitting left foot screamers

Bally being on side lines

2 worst stands triangle milton bike shed archers

Maddison at cb perfecting a benali tackle on juninho

watching mancs swap shirts at half time

KK managing to loss 3-1 when 1-0 up in 90th min

I'm old enough for the 80's and 90's but the 90's wins out for me just because it was the age at which i started to get the chance to go with my mates for the **** up as well as the game.

I can remember some great games down the years too, Dellhurst, the Newcastle games, liverpool 4-1, united and the blue few (knight's testimonial anyone?). Not to mention the careers of Matty, Dodd, Benali, Shearer, Timmy, Super Ken and the rest.
