Aaron Martin signs contract extension

Works for me. Good news after the bid from West Ham last january - we obviously want to keep him, I didn't think Adkins was that interested.

Did that definitely happen then?

Great news and I agree with the prediction of first teamer by April

haha

made me laugh...imagine johno quick playing at the back

As I was typing it I was thinking 'don't type Forte...don't type Forte' then bloody went and did type Forte. Anyhoo Good luck to the lad as he'll be a great partner for Davis in goal.

CBs mature late and are generally not at their best until late 20s or early 30s. I'm glad that NA has seen what I thought I saw when Martin played, i.e. good potential, and therefore has given him a longer term contract. (Not that my views had anything to do with it.)

Jaidi got himself a one year deal, so next summer we'll be looking at only three CBs, unless Seaborne leaves. Martin is competitive for that place in the CCC, but if we are in the PL next year (yeah I know, hope springs eternal) then there is a long step up for him unless he has actually played this coming campaign, either here or on loan elsewhere.

Still wouldn't be surprised to see us bring in a first team CB come in to instantly play alongside Fonte. I would be extremely worried if we go into that Leeds game with Jaidi as first choice or if Fonte got injured at any part of the season.

Great news though as he's a fantastic prospect, but certainly could do with popping him out on loan for 6 months or the season.

Good news and it looks from the article he'll be making some first team appearances next season. That's four centre backs, I don't really understand the obsession of bringing in a fifth.

And if Cork signs he can play there if we have any mega emergencies

Because I don't believe that Jaidi or Seaborne are good enough. Jaidi is but he does have some shockers and he won't play as much this season.

As Jaidi signed for another year, NA expects him to play. Seaborne maybe the weak link but until NA decides to sell/loan/not use him then there is no point on a fifth CB. Money is best spent elsewhere while Martin and Seaborne get some game time for their development and assessment.

WELL..thats a logical thought, but although Jaidi has a 1 year contract extension, we really need to bring in someone else regularly before May 2012. Seabourne or Martin seems a natural choice, because if we get a unlucky injury, or a longer suspension we can't start looking for short term replacements.

It wasn't so long ago ..last season in Prem.(?) ...that we had SIX defenders on the injured list at the same time.

If the squad looks big now, think about 46+ games ahead - anything could happen, better to be safe than sorry.

Crisis in the Spring in midfield with Schneiderlin, AOC, Lallana, loan-Stephens (and also Harding )..all out at the same time.

As luck would have it, Forte and Guly filled the gaps AND scored a couple of goals each. We didn't have any real alternatives if that hadn't worked.

I'm just glad that Connolly was fit again when Barnard got injured - with 5 games left.

I don't think you can have TOO big a squad, if they are all capable of performing and resigned to sitting on the bench regularly,

and getting the occasional 15/20 mins. sub app. If Cortese is happy to employ them - I'm content with that.

Still expect that we will sign a new CB for this season, 4 is definitely not enough, especially with Jaidi getting a bit long in the tooth. He may have been given a contract extension but that doesn't really mean NA expects him to play 46 games this season, will initially be first choice because of his experience, but expect him to start giving way to others by mid-season.

Pleased for Martin, he is still maturing for a CB, even more so now that I have discovered he is a Caulkhead like me (thanks to BBC, not mentioned on OS).

Still think we need another centre back. Bring Andrew Davies "home" from Stoke.

Jeez some folks are on some weird narcotics on this site!!!!

What also beggars belief is Oxo can terrorise the wing at 17 but A 21 year old CB needs to go out on loan because he is not old enough???!! I would hate to be in relying on some of you for a job if I was a nipper with the credentials for the job, but because of the date of birth on the application would be just chucked in the bin.

Whenever I have seen him play I have never questioned his "inexperience": only players with a special something get plucked from non league to play full fat football at a level above the bottom league.

Appearances last term (League, FAC, LC, JPT):

Fonte.... 43, 2, 2, 1

Jaidi...... 31, 2, 0, 1

Martin..... 4 (4), 1, 1, 0

Seaborne 14 (10), 3, 1, 0

I would expect and hope Martin to figure more next season. All part of building the experience in the squad as a squad.

Good - I think he is a very good prospect - the emphasis being prospect at the moment. He should not be rushed in as we have seen in the past - decided as not good enough (Mills senior and Monk) only to find they become successes elsewhere when they mature.

Very true, as good as a player I thought Matt Mills was and has become, it takes a while and is far more risky developing a defender than an attacker. If we are going to loan him out it should be at Championship level, he already seems to have the cut of L1. He looks a very good player who I thought should have played more L1 games, but I will not even question Adkins when he clearly sees developing the youth as a priority within other goals.

I see the UI is calling for him to be given full opportunity, something risky for a defender unless you are double sure. Adkins has to impress upon the lad he is one for the future and give him every cup game going and any further that warrants off the back of those performances, but he has to be patient. I have full faith in Adkins developing these youngsters but that does not mean them playing at every opportunity, there are other issues to be balanced here.

Happy to read the positive comments regarding Martins contract renewal. i'll freely admit I know nothing about him and have never seen him play.

that's loads of time (in football anyway) to find the right player. there's this window + the loan (with an option to buy) window, the jan window + another loan window.

I don't think you can have TOO big a squad,

Sorry, that is the one of the most mental statements I seen on the forum. Of course you can have bloated squads & you need to introduce youth to the first team at some stage (if the academy is working).

my only question is if Martin is ready to "do a job for us" in the npc. how would ye feel if he was on the bench/played against leeds?

Glad he has signed but I echo the sentiments that he should go out on loan. Certainly not ready to be in the first team and not as able currently as Seaborne who was by far the better player when they played alongside each other against Blackpool.

It's good that we giving him further time to develop.
