Guess Lawro's prediction

St Lej

Recommended Posts

Something along the lines of:

"Saints have shown they can up their game when it comes to playing the big teams at St Mary's this season, but their league position doesn't lie. They have a powerful threat up front with top English goal-scorer Lambert and an attacking midfield behind, but I cant see anything other than a win for Chelsea here - who will wanting to pull away from Spurs and cement 3rd place

1-3 to the away team"

Southampton have been hit and miss under new Manager Mauricio Pochettino and despite beating a below par Liverpool last time out they are firmly in the relegation battle. Goals are not a problem, but Liverpool could have scored four or five last week, underlining the defensive frailties. I still can't understand why they got rid of Nigel Adkins, you have to worry about the impatient foreign owners at St Mary's.

Chelsea face a tough trip to old Trafford on Monday but will want to secure third place and even if they rest their top performers like Mata and Ba they should still win this comfortably.

0-2

Southampton 0 Chelsea 2

Which by the way is a totally fair prediction. Chelsea are 3rd in the league, above us on the form table, have better players than us and are better away than we are at home. The most realistic prediction is a Chelsea win, and I can live very well with that.

Lawro rarely predicts any team to score more than 2 goals in his predictions. He very occasionally predicts the odd 3-0 win for Man Utd or City depending on their rivals, but thats it. He usually sticks with 2-0 or 2-1, 1-0 or 1-1. Percentages predictions

Yeah, even if he does predict Chelsea to win, is that really unfair?

They are challenging for Champions League places, we are fighting in a relegation battle.

To most people trying to make a prediction (that aren't Saints supporters), looking at this game, they probably are going to go for a Chelsea win.

In fairness, I would also be inclined to predict a Chelsea win. They are a good team, and even if they rest good players, it's not as if poor players are going to come in in their places. It's hardly going to be a big surprise if Chelsea were to win.

That said, I don't see why we can't get something from the game. And remain hopeful of a result (I'd take a draw if offered).

No qualms with his prediction, but I don't remember Liverpool going close 4-5 times? I do, however, remember us battering them and missing another 4-5 good chances aside of our goals.

I think it was a prediction of his prediction....!

Any neutral would probably predict a Chelsea win. I reckon 2-1 in either direction or maybe 2-2.

Bang on for me! He starts by praising us and ends up saying "but Chelsea are simply a better team." 1-3 Chelsea.

(For me, I think we'll get a point out of this - 2-2.)

Southampton we're very fortunate to play liverpool when they were below par but they have some great attacking options up front and in midfield and I believe they will trouble any team on their day. I think Chelsea will want revenge for Southampton doing a smash and grab stealing a point at Stamford bridge but seeing as they are playing Manchester united two days later they will rest some players, the players coming in though will still prove too strong for Southamptons weak defence and I can only see one winner here.

Verdict: 1-2

"Southampton had a good win against Liverpool but it just papers over the cracks. Since changing manager they have only won twice and that was against two teams well below par. This will be a reality check for them and remind them they are fighting for their lives to stay in the league. Chelsea have too much quality and should win comfortably.

Lawro prediction: 1-3"

My prediction 1-0

"Southampton had a good win last week, albeit against a Liverpool side having an off day. I feel the international break might've halted any momentum The Saints could've gained and it'll be a big ask to win against Chelsea too. The blues have an FA cup tie on Easter Monday, but have the strength in depth to gain the three points here".

Southampton 1-2 Chelsea

He'd go up massively in my opinion if he did say that.

One comment is hardly killing it. Call me insane if you like but here's an idea; You could always excercise a bit of self control and not read it or comment on it if you dont like what you see.

"Although Southampton were very lucky to beat an under-strength Liverpool side last time and the fact that their "hardest" fan has run away to Yorkshire to avoid showing himself up in a local fighting competition, I feel safe in saying that they will not win another game this season."

Lawro's prediction 2-1 Chelsea.

Or you could actually have a exercise a bit of intelligence and ignore to post in a thread if you don't like the topic. I think most people here would prefer that.

I liked the topic and posted on it. Im also not wasting my three posts a day telling people what they are and arent allowed to post and contributing nothing of note myself, maybe you should exercise a bit of intelligence and ignore a post if you dont like what it says, practice what you preach and all that.

There's a 50% chance he'll use the phrase "I don't know why..." in his prediction for our match. He uses the phrase approximately 5 times every weekend in that column. You'd think by now he'd realise that the reason he doesn't know is because he's completely ill-informed and in no position to make judgements about anything that's happened in football since he stopped playing, but apparently this hasn't hit home yet.

Lawrenson will go with 3-0 to Chelsea. I'll go for 2-1 to Chelsea (reserves).

Interesting he thinks Sunderland will get a point at home to Man Utd because of United's heavy schedule this weekend and the fact they might rest players.

No mention of Chelsea doing the same.

Probably because United are so far clear at the top that they could probably field their reserve team for the rest of the season and still win the title while Chelsea are one point clear of Spuds and missing out on automatic qualification for the champions league.

His predictions are pretty fair to be honest, he's also spot on about us loosing momentum because of the easter (sic - International) break.

Not sure about Sunderland sneaking a draw though.

Hasn't Chelsea had an international break to deal with.... his bias is coming out again! I'm that close to writing another letter the beeb!!!!

Looks like 1-2 is a popular prediction.

Opposing Chelsea may well be popular this weekend given their schedule - the Blues face Manchester United in an FA Cup replay on Monday before a Europa League quarter-final on Thursday. However, at close to 5/4 I just feel they've hit a backable price. They can't afford to ease up in this one given their top-four slot is far from secure and the depth of their squad is great enough to get them through their hectic schedule.

Southampton have admittedly produced some strong performances against the bigger sides, their willingness to attack having paid dividends. However, after beating Man City at St Mary's last month they lost their next match 4-2 at Newcastle and were then beaten at home by QPR. Saints have only won back-to-back league matches once this term and I'm not convinced they will be able to follow up their win over Liverpool.

While both teams made changes, Chelsea were 5-1 winners in an FA Cup tie between the sides in January, successfully picking off Saints with Demba Ba causing them all sorts of problems. The attacking talents of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard et al make Chelsea a real threat if Southampton throw too many forward. For me, the price on away win is just too big; I'd expected them to be a shade of odds-on.

Verdict: Southampton 1 Chelsea 2

So according to Lawro, even with the loss of Fletcher, Sunderland will snatch a draw due to United playing three days later (resting key players). Someone needs to tell him that we're playing the team that will be opposing United three days after, and have six games in 2 weeks, a schedule much worse than that of United.

And the answer is..........Saints to lose again.......for the 9th time in a row according to The Great Expert

Do you think it's unreasonable to think we would lose against a team in 3rd whose away record is better than our home record?

Yes Davey; he has. Seven times this season. Which, conincidentally, is the exact amount of games we've actually won.

Have many of those seven predicted wins was actually correct? (honest question)

I think he had us winning at the start of the season when we were losing and have us losing in the second part of the season where we have got better results....

Probably not.

I don't know why some other people on here get so wound up by Lawro. He's clearly a goon in the first place, but this is just a little feature akin to someone popping down the bookies to put an accumulator on. Yet any time he tips us to lose there's some faux outrage from at least 2 or 3; every single time.

When I put bets on for an accy, there's not a lot of thought goes in to it. If a team in the bottom 5 or 6 is playing away from home against a higher placed team, then I'll typically pick the lower side for a defeat. Or if a side in third is playing a side in 16th, I'd probably tip the 3rd placed team. Given we've barely been out of the bottom 5 or 6 all season, that's exactly what Lawro does. All the gnashin and wailing about how he hates Saints is just so preciously humourous.
