Nicola Cortese - Is he worth £1.576m per annum?

Up to the Liebherr's. If he was that much of a pain in the arse, he'd not still be here. He gets results doesn't he?

Oh, and I am sure we currently have players earning the same and more.

Round it up over the 4 seasons, and that's lets say £7m give or take, and I guess the Liebherr's would be happy with the developments.

If you look at the results since taking over the club I think Cortese has been a bargain for the Liebherrs.

Like him or not, it's hard to argue with the trajectory of the club under his leadership.

I seem to recall he was previously on closer to £500k p/a. Suggesting he perhaps receives bonus' for achievement. I have no problem with that. Reward success.

I have no opinion on his wage; if his employer(s) deem it fair then fine by me.

It will be interesting to see if there are a similar number of detractors to the Ceo's salary as there were to Rupert Lowe's performance based earnings when he oversaw a move to a new ground and finishes of 12th, 11th and 8th in the Premier League.

I think the maximum he earnt was £800k? for some reason that number is in my head.

I certainly wasn't one that criticised (however I could have been classed as a 'Lowe Luvvie').

Not even sure it was that much, even in the good old days. I had half a million in mind which included bonuses for turning a profit. It all seemed quite unpopular at the time. Like you say, I couldn't really care less, I thought it was a fair enough wage for a PL chairman. It was pretty unpopular at the time though.

I think it was closer to £440,000.

After Markus bought the club, a figure of £600,000 was recorded in the first set of accounts for senior directors (which was assumed to just be NC's wage), but that was only for a 6 month period, so it was assumed that the annual figure was around £1.2m.

There's just a slight difference between the two situations. Lowe was the chief executive of a PLC, owned by the shareholders. Cortese is the chief executive of a private company owned by the Liebherrs. They will have set the salary level and bonuses and are therefore presumably happy with the job he has been doing on their behalf.

Worth every penny.

Out of interest if we were relegated this season, we struggled to get promotion next season and found ourselves up against it financially due to the high wages we have taken on board, would your answer still be the same (assuming also that the wage stayed the same)?

No problem with a salary at that sort of level with the revenue the club is now pulling in. Certainly an issue when he's being paid around 10% of the club's turnover in League One though, but that's been and gone now so no point being bothered about it anymore.

Don't forget that Lowe also came with Andrew Cowan. From memory, I think that he was paid as much as Lowe.

No I would change my answer

It's not the fans' money so what does it matter to supporters? Would the gate prices go down if he was paid any less? Doubt it. If it takes that salary to keep him at the Club, and despite the sackings of Pardew and Adkins, he appears to be an effective Chairman, then as supporters we do benefit from what the team is achieving under Cortese's direction.

Ah ok, ignore my comment then. Clearly me getting confused.

The chairperson is arguably the most important figure at a (decent sized) football club, and IMO we are very lucky to have Cortese. I don't for a second agree with everything he's done (or the way he's done some things) but if you look around at the other chairmen in the PL, I see very few that I'd rather have instead.

No, but if wages in general were less, including his, then ticket prices could perhaps be less. Alternatively if his wage was £300,000 lower then the ticket tax could go.

A small price to pay with what he's delivered and what we stand to gain by staying up (assuming we do).

Still don't like how he operates though, but I'm gritting my teeth at the moment in preparation of accepting that he was absolutely spot on to bring Pochettino in.
