Villa or Wigan

Amesbury Saint

Wigan for me, 1 year too many in a relegation scrap. They have no ''sparks'' in their team this year.

If you think of previous years, they've had a real quality player who has dragged them through some games. I.e Nzogbia when he was in his pomp, or Moses last year. This year they have nothing, just a bog standard team. Play decent enough football, but weak in very important area's. Think this weekend has put 1 nail into their coffin to be honest.

I guess it's pretty likely that it will be decided by their final match against each other.

If the bookies are right, everyone else is pretty much safe now (all other teams are about 20/1 or longer to be relegated).

I hope Villa go down. My aim for next season remains (pessimistically) simply to survive rather than to win a CL spot, so I'm already looking for teams who I think will be weaker than Saints next season. Wigan would be (especially with distraction of Europa League), Villa might not be, IMHO.

No matter what Martinez says, some (if not all) of their players will have an eye on the cup final, a possible once in a life time chance for them to win that competition. I think that is why their results have gone to sh1te since they made it there, players not risking injury etc etc.

This. I have a feeling Wigan could even be down before they play villa. Tougher run in

If Villa go down we might have a decent shot at signing Benteke, who I think is one of the most realistic long term replacements for Lambert out there.

I think Wigan look the more likely at the moment, although Villa have a horrible run in. A mixture of relegation 6 pointers and Champions League contenders.

If Villa go down, Benteke will probably go to Spurs.

Even if Villa get relegated it will probbaly take £15M - £20M to prise Benteke away. I'd have thought he'd be quite in demand over the summer, and I don't see us splashing that sort of cash around.

Its always worth looking at the relegated clubs to see if there are other bargains to be had, though. I don't imagine Readin have got too much to go after. QPR, well wages will likely be a problem but the likes of Remy, Taraabt and Julio Cesar will surely be able to find another PL club if they want. Villa do have some promising youngsters, and Wigan also a few players that might be worth a punt.

Villa are the form side and Wigan have the cup so they are favourites.

Hope the stay too. Bringing through plenty of the academy, decent manager, good old fan base, Whelan is a twonk, we wont have to travel as far for the away games and the home game is more likely to sell out.

Sure Martinez has done well and Wigan deserve credit for staying up as long as they have but it might just be their time ...

Would have thought £15m would be the top end of his price tag if Villa go down. I'm trying to think of comparisons, we sold Crouch after we went down for £7m. I think Andy Johnson went for about £8m. £20m is world class players territory, you'd need to be pretty special to justify that kind of money. I don't think Benteke is quite that good, not yet anyway.

The transfer market is ridiculous, and with the injection of money from next year will only get worse. Begovic is being linked with a £15M move from Stoke over the summer, which is ludicrous. Bentele is a striker who is in his early 20s and has scored nearly 20 goals this season. Carroll was vastly overpriced at £35M but it shows the levels that some clubs will go to. And I've lost count of the number of posters on here who justify Ramirez's transfer by saying that £12M is nothing in today's prices.

It's not over yet as most relegation end of season dogfights show. 15 points to play for and the other teams 12 points. "There's many a slip between Cup and mouth"

Had Pompey not got a result at West Brom in 2005 on the last day we would have stayed up. So don't be cocky till it's 100% sure

Yeah, because Wigan are really going to make up 9 pts on us. No, really, they are capable of it, honest.

Did I quote Saints??????????????????

I mentioned "TEAMS"

Sure, Saints are unlikely to falter but there are other teams that may slip up with 4 games still left to play whereas Villa and Wigan have 5 games.

I've been following football for over 60 years and have seen some crazy things happen especially in the last games of the season.

Since Wigan populate the 3rd spot and the teams below them can't catch us you're supposing that Villa & Wigan win every game, which they can't as they are playing each other, all the teams below us don't lose a game and we fail to win another game.

Yeah, really going to happen that is.

Aroune Kone is top quality IMHO, though I'd imagine someone bigger would go for him.

Possible, although I'm starting to believe that the results this weekend make it 1 from 2.

Wigan had a decentish chance when 4 or 5 teams above were all within 2 or 3 points of themselves, now they're adrift of all bar Villa. I'll stick my neck out here and say that the table now will be the table come the end of the season, and I'd probably give Wigan 3 or 4 more points max.

wigan.how can a team do the same thing season after season,[ we used to whilst at The Dell for a few seasons when MLT was our perennial saviour ]

I too think Wigan will go down.

Hope I'm wrong as I'd rather it was Villa.

I want Villa to go down, firstly because I called it in about October, secondly because they could get good again and have far more resources than Wigan, so in the interests of improving our chances of success, we want the worst teams in the league. On the bright side, none of the teams coming from the Championship look even remotely decent this season.

Anyway. Wigan to go down.

Villa are a proper big club that I quite like.

Wigan are just a nothing club who don't belong in the division.

They are here on merit. Dont like this "belong" thing, kind of suggests a clubs history etc illustrates where they should be in the league, its that kind of thinking that keeps liverpool fans in delusional bubbles and I hope our fans can avoid such things especially considerring our recent touch with near extinction!

Can see us getting dragged back into the mire in the upcoming weeks.

Makes me cringe to see everyone saying 'we're safe' until we're mathematically safe I won't be opening the Champagne bottle.

I know what Saints are like, and it would be very Saints-like for us to lose our next 3 games and have to beat Stoke on the final day to stay up in my opinion.

Forgot Villa & Wigan play each other on the last day. I think it'll be between them going into the final day and wouldn't eb surprised if Wigan are 3 points behind with a GD advantage (i.e. needing to beat Villa to stay up).

Either way I couldn't care who goes down as long as it's not us and as they are playing each other on the final day, as long as we're at least a point above them both going into the last game!
