Pochettino targets Champions League spot next season

What is to stop us doing it? In 2010/2011, Newcastle came up and finished 12th. Then in 2011/2012, second season back and after a productive summer transfer window (Santon, Cabaye, Obertan, Marveaux, Ba,) and then adding only Cisse in January, they managed to finish 5th. Nothing to say a top 8 - top 6 finish isn't possible next season going by our current form and position in the form guide under Pochettino.

Steve Keane said this last year about Blackburn

No he didn't.

He said "in next 3 or 4 years"...

Plus he also was a terrible manager working for clueless owners.

Based on track records in football ownership and resources, which would you have more trust in to achieve their ambitions?

Anyone who moans about those kind of comments is a fool IMO. He isn't saying we will be in the CL, just that the ambition is to and there is no reason why it is impossible.

All those statements are true

It would be admittedly very, very difficult, but theres nothing wrong with aiming high.

Why not - try and emulate WBA and Everton this season. Although wba have fallen away they were up there until the New Year and had they had a slightly stronger squad (and better manager?) they could have still been in with a shout. I didn't rate them at the beginning of the season, and tbh still don't, but they did well for a long period.

WBA have a good keeper and a not so dusty team. If we'd had a better keeper from day 1 we would be above them. Just the points thrown away by Gazzaniga would put us on their heels and if Davis had done a wee bit better from the start who knows where we might have been. If you believe what you hear and read this was an Adkins alone decision and since we've had Boruc on a regular basis we've not thown away "keeper points".

Agreed - very, very difficult but not impossible.

The key to a Champions League spot is to have Richardson playing as sweeper in every match.

Better to aim for the Champions League and miss out, rather than aim for safety, achieve it by Christmas and have a meaningless second half to the season like Swansea and West Brom pretty much done this year.

With a couple of decent investments we can certainly compete with the likes of Everton for Europa League places. Newcastle came 5th last season, they beat Chelsea and both Scouse clubs and were only 4 points of Spuds in the 4th CL place. I don't see any reason we can't do something similar.

Nothing wrong with ambition... I won't hold my breath for the £100m squad investment required to get us anywhere near ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Spurs...

I can already hear Lawrenson banging on about us needing European football to justify the investment should we go big this summer...

I'm less interested in hearing about the Champions League place we're targetting and more interested in hearing what the plans are to actually do it.

Probably the continued development of a very young and talented squad, with some top class signings to take us up to the next level.

Our form since that awful first 10 games has pretty much matched Liverpool's. It's unlikely we will finish above them but it's got to be the ambition.

Its the level of top class signings that will be the key. And what the club can afford to spend, of course. To achieve a Champions League spot I'd hazard a guess that we're at least 6 players short (players that could potentially get in a top 4 side are IMO Clyne, Shaw, Cork, Schneiderlin, maybe Boruc). So to bridge the gap is pretty difficult, even our £12M signing regularly can't even get in our starting line-up, let alone that of a Champions League qualifying team.

Talking about Champions League is all very well; fine to have the ambition, but if its a true ambition then its there to be judged and there will come a time when your actions have to match your words.

We will be spending big,Gastons record fee will be broken

Hello sir. So the rumours of you moving to Reading with Mr Adkins were unfounded then...? ;)

When you say 'big'....are we talking double big or evening bigger than that? :)

cheers

I'd be peed off if we're not aiming as high as possible. If you only aim for 10th other chances are you will only end up lower as expectation's are lower. If you aim for the top, you will always try to play to the best of your ability and hence a higher league position.

I do not think we will. But in fairness, it doesn't sound like Pochettino thinks so either. He was clearly asked a leading question, and he was obviously going to reply with something along the lines of we will always try to finish up as high as possible.

I think it is possible, but we'd need to spend £40-£50m each season on new players for the next few seasons.

Swansea win a trophy at Wembley in March and they've had a meaningless second half of the season.

Fu ck me.
