Congrats Rickie

Saints boy in Leeds

Yep, also scored on his England debut. 2-0 against the frogs. 1992 I think. Definitely a saints player still.

Wiki says "despite making just one goalless appearance as England failed to progress past the Euro 1992 group stages that summer,[13] Shearer was soon subject to a British transfer record-breaking £3.3million[inconsistent] bid from Blackburn Rovers". No idea if it's right though

That was one of those genuinely life affirming moments, Ill never forget that moment. Congratulations Rickie, you're a Saints legend and seeing your pride at wearing the three lions was an example to the rest of the country.

Very well said mate.

My sentiments exactly. Feeling so proud and couldn't have happened to a more genuine person.

Pure quality as a man, player and goal scorer. Genuinely so chuffed for and proud of him...Congratulations!

I remember the interview as being something like 'and to Southampton Football Club, they've been fantastic for me from the moment I arrived' after dedicating it to his family...what a legend!!

DEAN HOYLE today scotched rumours of continued Town interest in Rickie Lambert and said both he and manager Lee Clark are delighted with the five signings made so far this close-season.

Despite denials by the Galpharm club and Bristol Rovers, stories of a deal for the £750,000-rated striker, who was a Town transfer target last January, refuse to go away.

However chairman Hoyle, who is cycling 70 miles a week as he prepares for his charity bike ride to the opening League I match at Southend United on Saturday, August 8 (see Page 10), insisted: “A move for Rickie Lambert is a no-no.

“No disrespect to a very good player, but it’s a simple matter of economics. Any deal would cost a minimum of £750,000 plus add-ons for a player who is 27 and who would want a three-year contract.

“Even if he scored 30 goals a season for those three years, by the time the contract is at an end, the player would be 30, and therefore there would be little or no resale value.
