Summer Transfer Window 2023

I know a lot about Piroe and he will be a star signing for us.

Remember that goal Mara scored against Man City in the semi final, where he created his own space? That is the sort of player he is. Nobody else in our team can do that.
Also he can create a yard when facing a defender by getting his shot away. Adam Armstrong is awful at this.

Reminds me of Ricky Lambert and I’m hoping he is the guy coming in for Che who will clearly be off soon if a suitable offer come in.

Met a family of season ticket holders on holiday last month. Their take was that he will score you goals, but not really give you much else.

Nixon is hit and miss

Id love McCarthy to leave the building but I struggle to see anybody daft enough to sign him

Nobody would be daft enough to pay him what we're paying and he wouldn't be daft enough to take a drop in salary to warm someone else's bench. Can't see him going anywhere which is a shame.

Remember RM saying on sky after the Sheff Wed match that our signings wouldn’t be squad players — Likely starters.  (Obviously all sorts of things can happen, but a little insight into their thinking).

Thank you, it’s a definite we are getting more players in. As Martin also said our back line will be quite different by the end of the transfer window. Already Charles, Manning in without selling any players. Clearly Downes was part of the JWP deal. We are selling Lavia and probably ABK that’s a lot of spending money.
as Supersaint has said the new players coming in won’t be kids for the future. Whether Che stays or not we will definitely get a decent striker in.

Weve played two games 6 pts out of 8. A good start considering all the chatter going on I do not understand how some posters on here assume this team will not be stabilised. We even paid a small fortune on a very experienced set piece specialist, obviously that will include defending against them as well.

Controversially I reckon Bazunu will settle down as well when the team has stabilised.

Team morale appears to have improved as well. OK we had a couple of rare decent performances last season but it would have been possible we would have caved in when Wednesday equalised and yesterday we fought right to the end. I see so many positives.

Team morale is critical. Apart from the indicators that you mention do we get any feedback from ITK's as to how happy the dressing room is with the direction of the club? Has the mood shifted dramatically?

From what I know the atmosphere is relaxed, it was choppy at the end if last season and, as I said before the French speaking quartet were the most vocal (coincidentally we’ve barely seen them)

But ultimately the dressing room is comfortable with the direction and happy with strategy.. eg.. most open to stay unless good offers come in

Out of contract next summer though so might take a three year deal with someone like Palace who are more than likely going to to stay up in that time on guaranteed wages, assuming he was one of those who ha a 40% cut on relegation. Hopefully someone will take him

Didn’t he take a cut previous to relegation too due to a lack of games ?

I believe so, think he had to play a certain amount of games. So he’s likely on less than half the amount he got when he signed the contract

Just wondering if the transfer permutation is simply we keep  AA ( who RM loves ) but cash in on Che plys release Tall Paul to be replaced by Piroe. Financially that would be a surplus to saints in wages and fees - and hopefully no net loss in goals. Che is certainly “ on fire” if that can be said if a 2 in 2 spree but his value is now at the highest it’s ever going to be for saints…

I think right now Che offers more personally, especially in this instance that he is in goalscoring form

If Piroe is a goalscorer, and little else, then to me its worth holding onto Che because from the system POV he offers more

I think that's a little bit harsh on Piroe, his strength and power enables him to bring others into the game. A lot is made of him just being a penalty box finisher, but he's more than that.

Yup I’m with you SS on that but if we sell Tall Paul and get Piroe in who starts? RM has said he wants starters at this point of the window- and Piroe would be thinking same - not coming to be a squad player.
But I guess one of our issues has been no competition for the striker berth. If Piroe joins then that’s going to heat things up- or would it piss off AA and Che ?

We'd only sign Piroe if Adams went, if our strikers stay the same as they are now then we won't be adding anymore to it. So he'd be a straight replacement for Adams and should start most weeks if that move transpires.

You've got the likes of Ballard in the background as well, so we need to keep the door open for them.

I'm pretty sure Piroe or A N other only comes in if we sell Che.

I don’t know enough about him really, but looking at the Swansea forum and a few posts on here it seems he is just a finisher but.. like I said.. happy to be wrong, my opinion is based on that

If we are only going to get £10 million for Adams I would be inclined to keep him and risk him going for nothing next summer.

Does the Downes transfer mean we arent interested in Grimes from Swansea as well ?

Have we ever been seriously linked to grimes?

We have plenty of players who can do a lot of things but the only finisher we have who is good enough for the championship is Adams and maybe Alcaraz. If Piroe does nothing but finish then I'd be ecstatic.

If KWP goes is it worth putting in a cheeky offer for Jed Spence or maybe try for a loan? He's never fitted in at Spurs but was excellent in this division when on loan to Nottingham Forest. He's also big and powerful so would help out defending crosses and improve our physicality. Not sure if he's still injured?

This would 100% be who I would want it KWP goes, maybe get him anyway as KWP seemed off it yesterday.

Going to be some loan opportunities for Championship clubs over the coming weeks. Historically, we have really under used the loan options in recent seasons, hopefully we can look at this market and take advantage of it.

Agree to an extent, but there’s a balance to be struck, if the best happens and we go straight up, you can all of a sudden get into a position where you’re rushing around to replace 5-6 loan players, like Forest last year and Sheffield United this.

No because he has now transferred to West Ham.

My point on the “dreamworld” comment is that some people are expecting us to bring in a lot of money for a load more of our players, and expecting to spend £20-30M in the next three weeks - I don’t see it.

RM has already talked about trimming the squad down and that it’s too bloated.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we got Downes and maybe two more, but it won’t be loads.

If Che goes, he ain't going for free. If ABK goes he ain't going for free. So there is every chance that we bring in more money for those two.

Downes will cost money, be it a loan fee or transfer and so would the 'two more' (let's assume one is Piroe) you mention, which is also the number I said.

So, all in all you seem to be agreeing with me, so no idea why you posted 'dreamworld'. Unlike with JWP, we seem to be singing off the same hymn sheet.

Agreed, but if the club showed a bit of forward thinking in recruitment, hopefully it wouldn't be too much of an issue.

Agreed. Honestly I’d never heard of him. It’s a bit like the Grimes story.

Would we even be talking about them if Russell Martin has managed someone else?

I mentioned him on the hcdajfu thread last summer. Since then He again scored goals and he's only got a year left, so yes, I think we'd still be talking about him. We'll, some of us would be...

Imagine you are in charge of transfers at Southampton. I reckon buying a striker will be pretty low on the priority list. AA. Adams. And Tella can score in this league, we've seen that. Jetison Mara and Onuachu, buy a back up to develop along with Ballard. Plenty of goal scoring chances will come from Sam Amo-Ameyaw, Edozie, Sullemana S Armstrong, Alcaraz and I suspect Dibling. Job done, nobody in this league comes anywhere near it.

In contrast you'll walking the nighttime floorboards at the lack of height and physical presence in midfield and defense.. Every other team has this. It has to be the priority to get that sorted.

If they sell ABK for £20m  on top of Salisu, Lavia, JWP, and Tino, then Saints will have the sort of financial muscle in the Championship that City enjoy in the Premier league.

He took a cut because he didn't play enough games last season according to the athletic. If he took a 40% cut too, he may be on a much lower wage than before.

Edit: ah, I can see that was mentioned already.

I’d rather be in the PL with that problem than not loan them in and still be stuck in the Championship

Burnley also loaned a number of players. I went through the top ten championship sides last season and they all loan Prem players.

Slightly off-topic but find it so funny to see Liverpool fans on twitter lashing out at Fabrizio Romano because of his reporting on Moises Caicedo to Chelsea. This Sacha has done nothing but basically say the same thing in 15 different tweets and is the only one suggesting Lavia "wants" Liverpool. Yet they will sit here and praise this guy like no tomorrow.

So on the basis our central defence was trashed yesterday by a reasonably competent Norwich team who broke well, who are the defenders we should be targeting?

ABK looks like he’s on his way to Germany, and we may be getting defensive midfielder, which centre back would you bring in?

I agree with you 100% about improving the physicality and height of our team, especially as this is particularly need in the championship
