The Kraken Posted Monday at 21:52 Posted Monday at 21:52 According to an old fossil, statistics don’t mean anything. Except they do. Especially when they reinforce the eye test. Bazunu is just a very poor goalkeeper for the Championship. Visual inspection picks it out, stats just back up the reasoning. 3

Surely it's time those running this football club looked at the mounting evidence and admitted City pulled their pants down and we must have a change of keeper. Bazunu is consistently bottom of every statistic going. 4

That’s what the third time that’s happened now? If Damion Downs is the worst outfield player I’ve ever seen start a game for Saints, Bazunu has to be the worst keeper. I know @Chez reckons Ian Andrews was worse but at least he only played 10 games in 5 years. Was a very promising prospect at Leicester but a big money move to Celtic when the SPL was good (Dundee United in a major European final, winning in the Nou Camp - Paul Sturrock might have scored the winner, and Aberdeen beating Real Madrid in one) failed and destroyed his confidence. Baz’s career highlight is a mixed spell in L1 for the skates. Got POTS but plenty of errors - check out their home defeat to Ipswich.
Lord Duckhunter Posted yesterday at 09:34 Posted yesterday at 09:34 Those statistics just show how unlucky Baz is. If Carl Rushworth faced the amount of unstoppable shots Baz faced, he’d be bottom of the list…. 4
AlexLaw76 Posted yesterday at 09:53 Posted yesterday at 09:53 Question of those who claim(ed) Baz is “fine” for this league… why do you say this???

He now gets plaudits for making any save - I saw people praising him on Saturday for the ones he did make all were regulation a keeper would be expected to save. Thats how far our standards are in goal have fallen. I have no faith in him - I see some are missing the point on Long - we didn’t need a 3rd keeper we needed a number 1 to replace Ramsdale not poor backups McCarthy should be 3rd choice. 4
Ex Lion Tamer Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago I kind of thought the club was quite stat driven but did that stop a few years ago? Is the fabled Black Box a thing of the past?

I’ve already openly admitted I said he was fine for the Championship. The good thing is the goalkeeper position has proven to be one of the ones that needs urgent investment. I’ve also said before how picking between Bazunu and McCarthy is like being offered the choice of stepping in cow shit or dog shit. 1

Probably the same ones who said our strikers were good enough for the Championship. And that in a previous life Archer scored …. in the Championship, Ad nauseam 1

One is a very average keeper and the other is not a keeper 1
Osvaldorama Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago I don’t understand how the club can supposedly be “data driven”, yet consistently ignore all of the data and copious evidence that we have a complete numpty in goal. So disappointing as a fan having to watch this guy fuck up week, after week, after week. 3
BarberSaint Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago But in fairness, he does have a shit defence ahead of him. Otherwise he'd probably ... nah, still be shit but we might have a few more points. If Cap'n Jack made fish fingers, they'd be cheese straws. 1

Can recall Rusty getting all uppity with someone at a fan's forum who dared to question Bazunu's competency and he more or less tried to claim the guy is and would prove to be one of the best 'keepers in the Championship. He might even have added he wouldn't swap him for any other team's 'keeper. This is the sort of arrogance we have to put up with from people like Rusty who try to tell us not to trust what we have seen with our own eyes because he knows best. 6
Holmes_and_Watson Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Seeing games with fans of other clubs recently has reminded me of something. When the ball is played back to their keeper under even the slightest hint of pressure, there's that intake of worried breathe. Likewise if they're trying to play it out from the back. Not something I worry about in the slightest with Baz. Cool as a cucumber dealing with all sorts of passes and possession.

Apart from repeatedly kicking it straight out of play the last couple of games. Even if his passing ability was to the level people try to make out, I would happily swap him for someone who can only boot it long up the middle but is an actual competent goalkeeper. 2

I'm with Saint Clark on this. Bazunu's kicking is not as brilliant as we were led to believe. For a bit of light relief, a few of us at Saint Mary's have started saying "he's only there for his kicking" after he launches another ball out of touch or straight down the middle to the centre back stood marking Arma. We've surprised ourselves how often it gets said. I'd be happier with a goalkeeper who is not just a good shot stopper but is also good with balls crossed into the box, especially as clubs know this is a weak point for us. 1

The other is great with his feet, not something I’m looking for from a GK, and makes excellent saves very rarely - normally in light of some fuck up he has done a few seconds before.

You couldn't clone even a half decent 'keeper from the best attributes of both of them. 1

His fucking job is to stop balls going in the net, not passing the fucking thing. 1
trousers Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Anyone know why our local journos never raise Bazunu's poor stats at press conferences? Either they're 'under orders' from the club not to bring it up or they're too afraid of rocking the boat and/or burning bridges with the club. Can't think of any other reason why it never crops up...

At a guess Adam Blackmore probably knows Tonda would toe the party line so thinks it's a waste of a question.

I much prefer the 'no holds barred' approach of the local Rangers journos when Martin was at the helm there. They don't beat about the bush... if there's an obvious shortfall they'll ask about it in a robust fashion. Yes, maybe they still don't the direct answers they're looking for but it gets the message across and maybe, in turn, it influences decisions in the background. More chance of that than with the nicey, nicey soft 'don't rock the boat' approach of our journos. IMHO of course :). Edited 44 minutes ago by trousers
