I suspect that they have some other offers on the table as you are right if he gets injured?

Maybe but his injury record will put many off.

cheeky fuckers really. He's had a good 6 months after being crocked for pretty much two years. On the one had you dont blame them but also wonder where's he going to get a better deal given he cant play 90 minutes or two games in a week and isnt premier league level.

I think that Ross is probably thinking Saints are not so keen on me staying that they wouldn't offer me a new contract regardless of what League they would be in next season, in other words they didn't think he was suitable for the PL. I would be a bit underwhelmed by that reaction if it was me and maybe its time to see what might be available elsewhere, probably after the WC (by the way can't see him getting much exposure in the WC, 3rd or 4th choice now). I hope he comes back, but suspect he might end up in the SPL, possibly with Hearts rather than Rangers or Celtic.

There is no way a SPL side are paying more than we would, even on reduced terms. Been reported we have been negotiating reduced terms with him for a 2 year deal (i imagine with an option) since Jan. I imagine its either brinkmanship from him thinking we will blink given spygate, or he has an offer from someone he hopes we match.

Not everything is about money, even for footballers.

If Ross is honest with himself, at his age, he's not right for the Prem League and much of that may or may not be down to his injury record. Therefore his realistic options are probably the Championship or maybe SPL.  In his shoes I'd probably be minded to negotiate another year or two with Southampton before this World Cup gets going. We've experience on how to use him and know his injury issues. Maybe a case of better the devil you know and I get that circumstances demonstrated that he'd probably not have been in our plans if we'd made it to the Prem. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet.

Nonsnese. Stewart is the best striker at the club and arguably in the leauge.

The reason he is roatated in and out is because of his injury record.

The later part to that statement is why I don't think he is in a powerful position as a free agent - He might get a decent sign on fee, but who's going to commit to a decent contract on a long term deal.

Disagree think larin was better and  offers more .. Stewart may. be slightly more clinical but larin more of a physical presence , faster and puts himself about more ..  both score goals in this league but larin makes his presence felt more

You can’t sack a player because they are injured and you can’t just stop their rehabilitation.

Not saying that but we have been super patient with him .. considering the majority of his time here was spent injured, regardless of his ability we have had plenty of fit strikers who didn’t get the chances he did  if we didn’t bring him back into the team he would be struggling to find a club right now

I think there's definitely teams at the bottom end of the Premier League who would take a punt on him. Useful squad player, not that expensive, showed he can do it against Arsenal

If he does play at the WC and gets injured, unfortunately he'll be in no position to negotiate with anyone. Bit of a risk, but hopefully he'll be fine and I wish him all the best if he goes elsewhere. We just need to make sure we bring in decent replacement and move onwards.

Will this affect his commitment at the World Cup?

Yeah, I think it will . It’s not like it’s his only opportunity to play in a World Cup, there will be another in 4 years time,  & Scotland are nailed on to qualify.

Seen a report that Boro may be interested in Ross Stewart. Can imagine any phone call from them will be cut off quicker than you can say Gibbo.

"Hey Ross, Steve Gibson, owner of Middlesbrough here. We know we took your opportunity of playing at Wembley for promotion away from you, but would you be interested in signing for us? Ross...? Ross?"

umm, dont get me wrong I absolutely love Ross Stewart but dont forget the club who paid a lot of money for you and got you through those dark days Ross.

I'm sure he's thankful to Southampton FC and its medical staff.

He's about to become a free agent, so any calls would be going straight to him/ his agent and for as long as he's without a club I doubt he'd be cutting off anyone who wanted to discuss offering him a contract

Not sure this is true as of now. Might change going forward but I think he is currently still contracted to us probably until the end of June.

Why?

Not sure they're a club we'll want to do business with any more than they'd sell any of their players to us. Just a hunch really.

He is out of contract on 30th June 2026, they do not need to do business with Saints to sign him. They just need to contact his agent.

I didn't say anything different.

That's a shame, but I am not too gutted Ross has gone. He's a good Champ striker on his day but there's just too many ?s with him. I wouldn't want to be trying to get through an entire 46-game season with him and Larin praying for no injuries...

I know he's got to look out for himself etc., but that's dick behaviour really. The club has been crazy patient with him. Gave us one semi-fit season and fucks off. £12m well spent, plus wages & fees etc.

I get that he might be aggrieved we were clearly not going to renew if we got promoted, but in light of everything we've done for him I felt he kinda owed us that. Got him to the WC and everything.

Cock.

He's a bit of a wanker really, isn't he.

Been absolutely useless for us for the best part of 4 years to then fuck us over on a technicality.

Hopefully he comes back from the US with a serious injury preventing him from signing for another club.

Shame really, think he owed us at least a year considering how little we got out of him and what he was paid. Still though, there’s every chance after spygate he feels robbed by the club and wants off.

That is a shame, Alfie House confirming it was the players decision. Thats effin poor given the use he's had of Saints medical facilites......actually its piss poor 🤬

Bit of a shame with him finally retaining some fitness and a run of games.

A little peeved to be honest, given the amount of work we've put into his recovery, but he is certainly replaceable. Think he may live to regret his decision to leave

It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Not sure many managers will want to take him on due to his injury record but as there’s no transfer fee involved the overall outlay won’t be huge.

Yep, this.

Would've liked to have kept him but there's plenty more fish in the sea who would be far less risky, injury wise.

It is what it is. I was hoping we'd try and upgrade our striker options in any case - Larin is a solid addition, but Archer and Downs are no good.

Should focus our attention now we have confirmation.

Back to Scotland I assume. He’ll be able to carve out a few more seasons in the top flight there.

I wonder if Stewart was (one of) the player(s) who wasn't happy with Tonda staying at the helm, due to 'spygate'...?

If I remember correctly, it was reported that "almost all" the players gave their backing to Tonda continuing at the 'summit meeting' they had with Dragan...

maybe, but he had pace, height and finishing ability which is a rare combination. Also, we may have to pay a transfer fee for his replacement, which restricts spending elsewhere. A new signing will itself be a gamble (they all are). At least with Ross we knew he could actually play. Big hole left in our strike force. We looked like we were well set there...
