carljack Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago O`Neil now 5/4 with William Hills.Someone knows something,he has probably been interviewed. 1 1
aintforever Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago O’Neil would be nowhere near the top of my list but given the potentially batshit crazy style of appointment SR could make I would be reasonably happy. 1

But the continued issue of playing five at the back and shit substitutions makes me extremely uncomfortable. My view is they’ll give him the rest of the season , in effect writing it off as one just to “stabilise” in this league, as they’ll use the excuse that there will be more managers available in the summer and there wasn’t an outstanding candidate at this time, Absolutely ridiculous , but these owners are just that. Ridiculous. If it happens, that’ll be 2 consecutive seasons written off before Xmas, which illustrates just how bad the running and planning of the club has been if your season is done 1/3 of the way through. We could still get top 6 of course, but the club clearly aren’t thinking that way if they appoint this guy. Edited 2 hours ago by Mboto Gorge 1

My thoughts entirely - at least he has some experience and he knows the league(s) here. 1
Dusic Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Would personally rather see RM back than O'Neil. Pompey connection would always be held against him and he is really just another of those uninspiring types who has done a pretty average job at both his clubs with fairly short tenures. 4

SaintN14 Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago (edited) The team have been vulnerable (terrible) in defence for 3.5 years. Improving this has to be the priority in the short term for the next manager. I don’t think we have the right type of fullbacks to play a back 5. There must be a combination of 2 CBs who can play well together and form a partnership in a back 4, with protection from our decent CMs in front (Charles, Romeu, Jander, Downes). O’Neil’s recent record at Wolves was heavy on goals conceeeded (40 goals after 16 games last year), and I’m not convinced he’s the man to do this. I don’t think as much can be coached in the forward department. We need a number 9 that can consistently put away the chances that have been created so far this season, and for me that has to be a priority singing in January. Someone like a Sargent at Norwich (whatever the German division 2 version of that is). If I think about our more successful managers over the last 5 years (Ralph/Russel) we’ve had a playing style which the players (and fans) have been able to identify, understand and get behind. Ultimately winning games is what matters, but it gives you a plan/direction to fall back to. For me, Carrick would be the best at this from the names linked. Also there’s something around consistency in our play that’s been missing recently. I.e In games where Quarshie was playing we’d do the long throw at the beginning, then would give it up after the second/third attempt didn’t work. Not sure if laziness (or indeed if I’m missrembering) but think it comes back to having a plan/identity. UTS. Edited 2 hours ago by SaintN14 1

Probably one for @Matthew Le God to get his annoying little teeth into... 😁

Harry_SFC Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago (edited) Ignoring the Pompey connections, O'Neil would be a bit meh if it happened. Could they appoint worse? Definitely but his track record in the Premier League is pretty poor. I'm not that bothered about the fact he played for Pompey but a lot would be, which would make his job even harder. Kept Bournemouth up with a great run to finish the 22/23 season. Also led Wolves to 14th which was decent considering the team they had. We're also a struggling Championship team right now SR could definitely appoint worse, and probably will 2

If you filter down to SRs usual requirements: someone out of work, someone most of us don't know much about, tight chinos, plays 3 at the back, young enough to be a gamble, etc. what are we left with?
