Tomorrow is massive now, lose it and the pressure will very much be on him and the owners.

Not overly arsed to be honest as it was an open secret that he was coming in about 2 days after Still was sacked. The Millwall game was extremely concerning. SR masterclass incoming I fear.

Hard to see how they couldn't appoint him. Lets start positive, he isn't the worst we had. 

Annoyingly if he does well, and I really hope he does, he's going to be nicked by a German or Austrian team. Guess we need Spors to stay to stop that happening.

Best of luck Tonda.

A very promising start. Huge improvement over what has gone before and already more successful than vast majority of our recent appointments.

Not sure its trying to be clever. They have seen him working at close quarters for the last month, largely achieving very good results.

Not often a club gets the chance to see how a manager fits before committing.

The way in such a short time the players have really taken to him and in some games the performances have been unrecognisable is a very promising sign IMO. And now he has extra authority.

I would have liked to have seen how the team respond after the debacle last week before taking him on. It’s a big moment to see how a team bounces back. The pressure on him would have been good to judge how he will deal with things. 
 

i think there will be more Millwall type games than Sheffield wed.

 

i wonder who else applied or was approached  feels like this was the answer for them all along

Problem is we've been here before a few times over the years with promoted coaches with little or no management experience and it's never resulted in anything good. The ones that spring to mind are Stuart Gray, Steve Wigley, Reuben Selles. All sold as being up and coming managerial superstars, popular with the players etc, all hopelessly inexperienced and unproven and spectacularly unsuccessful and shortlived in the job. 

That said, I have nothing against him and as a Saints fan, I really hope he proves to be the real deal and much better than the above 3. One more thing I would say is if you appoint a 32 year old manager, it is very unlikely they will get everything right straight away so I think we will all need to show some patience and give him a chance to learn on the job if this is going to work.

Saints have played some brilliant football and for once attacking. Let's hope Millwall was a blip and a win tomorrow. 

Wonder if there will be any budget for Jan window or is it work with what you have.

Easy game at Charlton but the players still did a very good performance that was actually real football.  Tonda needs to get the team playing solid football with or without Scienza

Err, but they were learning in the club for years under great managers like Shankley. Ours are learning under the likes of Russell Martin and Will Still!

Let’s hope this one works out! All the best of luck to him. We are obviously not a very attractive proposition to anyone with experience. 

If we do not make the playoffs he will be gone. If we go up, he will be gone, either for someone with experience or after the first few games. The best outcome for him would be making the playoffs and not going up. It would maybe give him to June 2027 and see out his contract.

How sad if true, I really hope not. I’m really sick of how shit we’ve been and the negativity around the club for what seems like years (aside from the promotion season).

I just want to enjoy being a fan again for a while, please can we give him some time, even if we lose the next few!

I agree it would be ridiculous for such a young manager to feel pressure from fans after 1 match from when they are appointed permanently!

I don't agree with this appointment but do agree with your sentiment of giving him a fair chance now he's in the job, any pressure should be directed at SR not him.

I don’t agree that we are not an attractive proposition to anyone with experience. I think that those who are available at the moment don’t fit the bill. Eckert was given the u21 job because he had the potential to eventually move up to the top job. This has happened sooner than expected because Will Still didn’t work out. He will either turn out to be a good appointment or not. Either way it doesn’t mean that the job of manager/head coach at St. Mary’s  isn’t attractive to an experienced manager.

Lawrie McMenemy was assistant manager before getting the top job. He did OK.

I'm surprised (although perhaps shouldn't be) by all the Tonda negativity here. Yes, we were shite against Millwall, but when's the last time a new manager enjoyed any sort of bounce here? And four wins on the trot considering how awful we were looking under Still has not received the amount of praise it should have done. It's a big deal.

I of course understand and share the total lack of faith in Sports Republic owing to their horrendous track record, but eventually one of their dice roles must inevitably work out. Will it be this one? Who knows...

Certainly on paper Tonda isn't what any of us would have looked for, but for me the uptick in results is just so abnormally positive for our shitty football club that I just can't look beyond it. Seemingly, neither could SR.

I desperately hope it all works out. Massive game tomorrow now. A win, and Millwall becomes a blip. A loss, and the bounce is already over and who knows what pain lays in wait.

No, as below he was brought in initially to shadow Ted Bates before taking over.  Question  whether he was put into the managers role sooner than expected as of course we were relegated at the end of that season.

Worth remembering that Lawrie had two promotions before joining us as well though, at Doncaster (although sacked the following season) and then Grimsby. He didn’t make the leap to Division One without some good experience elsewhere. 
 

(Worth remembering that perhaps the jump up the Divisions wasn’t perhaps as great as it is now, and was considered a trusted  route in those days).

One and a half year contract. Sensible but doesn’t seem an overwhelming commitment or endorsement by the club. 
 

Seems to me the club may have committed to a longer trial period.
