Brings back some great memories! Used to watch it on repeat, can't remember if it was on VHS or if DVDs were out by then.....

As you say we are very lucky to have been able to watch a player like him at our club! I'll definitely be giving that another watch :)

Haha no way, still have a copy of the VHS tape

Same, in a box in my garage with other boxes of stuff that I boxed up when I left home in 1997 or so - probably wouldn't work now.

Good shout on Amazon Prime, thanks though Turkish!

Likewise. Not watched it for a long long time...not having a video player hasn't helped. The number of amazing goals is just ridiculous. Unbelievable in fact. I know 93-95 were his stand out seasons, but I love watching his goals from when he was younger. That 89-90 season was bloody brilliant.

agreed. What always amazed me about his shots were the finesse. It was like watching a top golfer, never seemed to smash it, always looked so relaxed and effortless but the power he generated made a lot of shots unstoppable.

Saw the thread title and assumed it was about him spouting more bollocks theories like the moon,s made of cheese or SR and the government are doing a good job.

I think that’s his “Unbelievable 2” blu ray coming out soon.

Same as most, I have the VHS somewhere in the house. May have a compact disc version as well!

recently saw the highlights of the 3-1 win over the grey shirts and how precise MLTs finish was for his goal. How we missed that over the years.

I’ve still got the video too, plus the signed certificate from him and Chris Nichol from my 1988/89 junior saints membership

I was in Junior Saints then as well, not got the certificate anymore but I do have a box of programmes from that time with Matt signature on most of them

Down south recently, talking to my mate (for decades) and he apparently is mate of his. He was at some golf do or something, stood next to him, built up his courage to talk to him and apparently you genuinely wouldn't know he is famous or was a top level talented professional footballer. He's really ordinary and he plays golf with him occassionally, chats to him.....fair enough I say.

I used to watch the VHS as a kid at least once a week. I can still remember most of it word for word!

I don’t think the younger generation of fans appreciate just how good he was.

for 2-3 years when he was at his peak he was the best player in the country and one of the best in the world. He was scoring 20+ goals a season in a pretty shit team and a good percentage of them were goals of real quality, he didn't score many tap ins did he.

Wasn’t bad at setting others up either. Just how much would he be worth by way of transfer fee now?

Yes, nostalgia alert! I'm sure I kept mine. Bought it at a signing at, I think, Oxford St HMV where there were a fair few Saints and others fans even though in London. Well excited to meet him that day.

What a video.

I was there as a kid and a teenager for MLT. Unbelievable player.

he would be a £150m player now, comfortably.

That early hattrick against Norwich inc that ridiculous goal where he goes past 3 or 4 midfielders and fades a low shot in off the far post. Absolutely world class brilliance.

I think i said goodbye to my VHS copy when we cleared out my old Mum's house a couple of years back.

Will be watching that on Prime this weekend for sure.

As well as the goals will be nice to hear again Statto from Fantasy League doing the commentary pretending he was at the games live 😂

Same, usual spot was at the back in line with the left hand post, the third goal that he chipped over the keeper and hit the inside of the post I didn’t see the ball go on and thought it had gone wide until everyone in front jumped up

also had a brilliant view of his free kick v Swindon in extra time of the league cup. The bend he got on that was incredible

He really was unbelievable , great era for football, much more watchable than it is now with some genuine characters across the Premier League

I've watched this so many times, remember being in the junior Saints on those metal benches lower east stand , magic

Our usual spot was at the front, pretty much dead centre behind the goal. My mate always brought an inflatable banana with him. You can clearly see it in the Liverpool game when we beat them 4-1.

Still have mine on DVD. Deserves a rewatch.

Unbelievably Le Tiss is switching on the Christmas lights in my home town in Wiltshire next Saturday. No idea why.

I saw that - my mate lives in Devizes so I was thinking about heading to Calne to see it and then crash at hers but now I have other plans. Pretty random though.

It’s Xavi (I think)

That's Xavi, he's a great admirer of MLT. Matt did an'evening with' at the Mayflower a few years ago and Xavi did a short film praising him which they showed on a screen.

Never got to see him in his younger years, and invariably good highlights are hard to come by - but watching that its clear that he really was some player even as a teenager! A talent as good as that at 17 would've got Rooney levels of hype in today's world.

I think it's hard to explain to fans who weren't around at the time just how good he was. No way we would have kept hold of him for so long if he was playing today.

Just looking at the advertising hoardings in some of those clips to see the companies associated with us at the time and how successful they have been. Northern Rock, British Steel, Sega, Today Newspaper, Bonusprint, Littlewoods stores, Homebase, Cellnet...

When you look at how many goals came from proper wing play with overlapping fullbacks, strikers actually in the box, centre forward who could hold up the ball and lay it off (never really appreciated how many assists Ian Dowie had!) how I wish we would play like that again now.

Game has changed though - its all about fitness, power, systems these days (over flair and skill). And the Pep in particular has had a huge impact on football - so many managers want to be pep lite these days, which has led to keeping the ball at all costs (the opposite of attacking wing play, crosses into the box, and multiple attackers arriving in the box)...

Then ofc teams need to be in very well structured defensive shapes and pressing patterns etc. The game has basically turned into one constantly moving complex American football game, with a series of drawn up plays being instigated at all times and players knowing their jobs and operating like cogs in the machine. Its far rarer these days to see attacking players being given creative freedoms. I suspect players like Le Tissier wouldn't have got on too well with a lot of managers in modern football, and would have wound up being wasted. Looking back, it feels like the late 80s and 90s (in particular) were a bit of a golden age for football (in this country at least). Not helped by the domination of a select few clubs the longer the prem era has gone on.

The video is still in the video drawer and hasn’t been watched for ages. Good watch though of a fantastic player at his peak.

Great shame that a similar collection wasn’t available for Channon who was equally exhilarating to watch. But he was before the video fashion, or have I missed it ?

Come on Xavi, you know that after Barcelona, The Dell and therefore St Mary’s is your spiritual home. Romeu as assistant is already here.

A couple of years as manager here will set you up for life. Never have to work again.*

* and two years working with Rasmus and gang, you either won’t want to, or get another opportunity

I'd love to see that video, if it had existed. Would all of his goals have been recorded on film though? It's just before my time, so not sure what was and wasn't on MOTD etc.

Amazing to know that the best Saints player in my lifetime, my boyhood hero, was loyal to our club throughout his career and then scored the last ever goal at the Dell.

As David Baddiel would say, Matt Le Tissier is quite simply unbelievable.

No they didn’t have saturation coverage in those days, it was just MOTD with two games, and ITV stations for a local match on Sunday. I also read somewhere that both stations would often ‘wipe’ the film footage tapes sometime after, so even if shown there’s no guarantee it was retained.

I did find a collection of Channon’s goals in Youtube earlier in the year that I posted on here. There were quite a few on there that I didn’t expect to see again (hat trick v WBA in the 1976 Cup replay for example), although quality of film not great.
