  • Tommy Mulgrew changed the title to Saints v WBA 19.45pm 9.12.2025

They are only two points below us in the league which would suggest quite an even game , seems their fans are not happy with the manager Ryan Mason and a few are calling for his head which seems harsh from the outside.

Let's try to recreate the last time we played  them here

Same team but Wellington in for Manning (won't happen though).

West Brom have been pretty hit and miss this season. Started well but have tailed off a bit and seem to be letting in a fair few goals.

Will be interesting to see how they set up.

Hopefully Armstrong is ok to start again after getting a knock. If so there’s no need to change anything.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Edozie take Aribo’s place on the bench- feel like if he can get fit he may be a good sub option when Leo is knackered as he’s a bit more of a winger than Robinson.

Leave a space on the bench vacant where Aribo might otherwise be and it would be a better option than Joe.

We aren't playing a system that uses a winger role.

Just throw the actual bench on. It would probably provide more defensive cover.

Another 1st half attacking treat from Leo , Arma , Azaz & especially Fellows .. he’ll be chomping at the bit to score & assist in this one !

im going saints 3-0 .. fellows , scienza & Arma in the 1st period again !

Better game management for 2nd half from Tonda too please 🙏🏻

I do think we'll smash 6 or 7 past someone this season, the way some of our attacking play has been.

I would agree but I feel like we intentionally put the brakes on after building a cushion

For example if we went for it second half at Charlton we could've scored even more

Probably for the best to ease off in the longer term but it feels good to emphatically destroy a team 7 or 8 nil

Shocking challenge for the penalty. Sign him up

I wouldn't change too much the team is really gelling. However lots of games coming up, so need to use the squad.

Armstrong even if declared fit, will be carrying a knock, so I'd replace him with Archer. Cam looked bang up for it yesterday, and if he can rediscover some form, will be a massive asset for Saints.

Bragg will probably get a run out at some point. Tonda needs three effective midfielders available. I said effective Joe, put your hand down.

Robinson and Edozie are excellent replacements for Leo and Fellows. Different styles but they can both cause problems.

No game is a formality but we should be confident of this one.

Charles to come back in when fit - which can’t be that far away.

Can't foresee any changes unless there are injuries.
Maybe Norwich he'll tinker, Bragg for Downes, Edwards/Quarshie in for one of Wood/THB/JS, Welington for Manning etc.

That's alright, Edozie is at his best cutting in from the left to run in between the width of the 18 yard box anyway.

Key question, Is it on the box? Most Tuesday EFL games are but no mention of it on Saints website.

Trouble with him is what he does with it next that has always been the  problem

Would like to see Welington starting.

He might but personally yet to see anything to really judge him yet which is peobably quite telling for a player who has been at Saints for a year.

I get that Manning isn't interested at stopping crosses but his on the ball play has benefitted us far more this season than his off the ball work has hindered us. Clear first choice at LWB for me.

(Would be after Amass on loan in Jan and moving Welington on myself).

6 goals and 3 assists in 32 appearances last time in the championship, playing a style of football that didn't suit him. Also only 22 years old.

Should be a routine comfortable win. No need to change anything in the starting 11, just swap Aribo for Wellington on the bench and I’ll be happy.

Team picks itself. Just need Aribo to not be on the bench.

I want Archer to score 2nd half.

Let's not get to carried away, WBA have some decent players and were above us before Saturdays results, a win against them would be a very good result.

They're a funny side who don't seem to win many away from home, looked very good recently taking a two goal lead away at Coventry and then fell apart and lost it 3-2.

Did you get that sorted? It looks like website set for just general pricing and not members discount as I just tried with my kids one.

Going to be a small crowd from the look of it, WBA bringing even less fans than Leicester did and thousands unsold in the home end as well, midweek December home games a tough sell even with the improvement in form

I’m sorted now, phoned up and queried it but issue should be rectified now if booking online. Log in and it will now apply the discount.

I don’t think I’m getting carried away to be fair - we have one of the best squads in this division, finally playing to somewhere near their potential, full of confidence, at home to a well organised and competent side with players at a good but on average lesser standard than ours, who just got smacked 4-0 (at an average Sheffield United) so are presumably not full of confidence.

It should be a routine comfortable home win. Of course, with well over 40 years of saints’ very special “scar tissue” I am very aware we are capable of cocking it up. But it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be 3 points comfortably won.

WBA are going to sit back and defend in numbers. Crucial we score first, and don't get towards the end of the match needing to break the deadlock. Or this could be a very frustrating game. This will not be a cake walk.

  • Arma is good, all is fine after a knock
  • Players are fine and ready to go again
  • Quarshie was brought in against Leicester for tactical reasons, not to rest players
  • If you look at the table, we are a little far away from top 6
  • We need to take 1 game at a time, sounds boring but that is the reality
  • Still many many points to play for
  • It is important that we declare our ambition for promotion, but we need to back it up on the pitch
  • Mason as had an unbelievable journey as a manager
  • They have high outputs; it will be an intense game as we must match that
  • They are a better team than the table tells us
  • They are very physical, and it will not be easy
  • I know some of their players, they are very strong
  • Their main striker is excellent, very good holding the ball up, very strong
  • He likes to attack certain areas in the box, we must defend those areas well
  • We are on a 3-goal average now and credit to the boys
  • We must improve; we must defend and put it all on the line
  • We will need to tweak a few things still
  • The desire not to concede on Sat was very pleasing
  • I did my last coaching badges in Italy. The first thing they talk about is the result, then development and then entertaining
  • I prefer to win than be entertaining, but we want our supporters to enjoy themselves. Winning is most important
  • I would prefer to win ugly than lose beautifully
  • I talk with Spors daily, and we have a good connection between all levels of the set up
  • We have very good conversations; we are happy with the squad for the moment
  • Not being the assistant my opinion counts for more. We are looking how to improve and will continue that

Not much to disagree with there.

Watching the car crash of Celtics game yesterday with their manager (already being called R.Martin like) and the interview afterwards basically say performance trumps results, I'm feeling a bit calmer about our manager appointment.

Want to see a bit more in the second half of games (including the subs), don't know if it's the managers tactics are to sit in and hit teams on the break, he keeps on about clean sheets so maybe thats why. Millwall found us out, Birmingham didnt, so will be interesting to see what West Brom do. I'm sure they will have a plan for Fellows but they will still have to work Leo out as well. Going to be an open game again. It's been great to watch some of our play recently, long may this continue. UTS

100% agree with this - so long as we don't get people complaining when we win and it's ugly or boring we will be fine. As a side note, I've been from bored though so far.
