Charlton @ home 4th April, 3 points a must?

Mr X

Recommended Posts

Weve had a couple of so called must win games and not got the three points

If we are to hold on to the hope we are going to stay up

WE SIMPLY MUST WIN!

agreed?

And so we will, probably by at least 4 goals, the lads won't let me

down, seeing as it'll cost me at least £500 to be there and back at work on Sunday evening.

Worrying times it should be an easy three points in theory but I fully expect charlton to inexplicably turn on the style

And what style would that be then?

They don't have any "style" whatever they had went out of the door with Pardew when he was replaced by the boot boy.

Charlton got 13 points from their first 10 games this season, they've got 16 from the last 30.

what worries me is they are effectively down, and we all know what happens when teams have nothing to play for :(

From what I read from the match report and saw from the virginmedia highlights, the only player that is playing really well at the moment for Charlton is the China captain who is called Zheng Zhi. If we can man mark him with Wotton or Gillet, 3 points should be us. And also as they are nearly have nothing to play for, they won't go too defensive and want to hit us on counter attack or coming for 1 point. Let's play attacking football and see which team will score more after 90 minutes, that type of game should suitable for us on 4th of April.

Saw Charlton play twice this season and they have a very similar style to The Mighty Saints = Losing most games and drawing a few with the odd win.

Overall a very poor team as per Saints...I would have thought a draw or a win by 5-0 to either team...

AGREED!

Anything less than 3 points and we're going down the plughole.

Sadly I can see this being a nervy cagey match, low on quality and drama.

However, I hope to be proven wrong and for that reason, and that reason alone, I'm IN!

I am fed up with the must win games when there is a game we could and should win we have fecked it up which is why we are where we are I can see another 0.0 or 1.1 I hope I am wrong but I have lost hope then regained it so many times this season I dont know if I am coming or going and that can cause all sorts of problems I love the Saints and will be at every game and League 1 next year if we go down but right now I am thinking what will be will be GIVE ME BACK MY HOPE PLEASSSSSSSSSSE

It has always been said, that the league dosn't lie. We are where we are, because that is our current level. I agree, we have had two must win games, and didn't, I am more worried now, than I was on the last game last year........I really fear for our club

What is crazy is that we could draw or even lose and be no worse off!!!!!!

Forest are away (albeit at Barnsley), Plymouth are also away (Blackpool) and Norwich have Sheff Weds at home.

I could easily see them all only picking up a point, which would mean we would still be in with a shout (particularly with our game in hand).

Of course, if we're going to overhaul teams then we have to close the gap, and Charlton is obviously our best chance of doing that, but still think we will be in with a chance of staying up even up tp the 90th minute of the last game.

Fail to beat Charlton and it's curtains IMO, mainly because our next two games are Wolves away (little chance of a point) and Watford away (always get dicked).

We need to beat Charlton AND have the other results go our way to stand a decent chance IMO.

nail on the head

I can really see this game being tough for us. I reckon Charlton will beat us if i'm honest.

They shouldn't, and if we were playing them on the back of a couple of solid results I'd say they wouldn't, but 90% of the game is now psychological and I'm not sure the team is mentally tough enough to claim the three points with minimum fuss.

The thing is we are under massive pressure to win, wheras Charlton have no pressure - but they do have a point to prove. They won't sit back, i'm sure of that, so i expect this to be a 3-2 or 4-3 game that can go either way.

Come on now, we all really know how this one will go.

Miss a sitter after a couple of minutes and then stroll around in the sun for the rest of the half. After an hour or so and a couple of mi**** shots later some strange substitutions will take place and we'll have a flurry of corners. In the last minute Charlton break away and the ball ends up in Saints net. 0-1 written all over it.

Unfortunately that's pretty much how I see it, although we might get a lucky last minute goal to force a draw. It will not be good enough.

Most matches go to the team that wants it the most and I don't expect this one to be any different. A draw's not going to be enough so I suppose you could call it a 'must win' game. We are rapidly running out of games if we are to climb out of the bottom three. One ray of hope is the game-in-hand. Once that has gone then there won't be much light left, IMO.

This really is the 1 game we must win with Watford & Wolves both away to follow, we have to have the psychological cushion of 3-points over Charlton. If we do win & results go our way in other games, who knows what a confidence boost could give us as we go into these 2 away games. However if we fail to win against Charlton would be a crushing psychological blow then a potential 1-point from 3-games would see us all but gone IMHO.

What if we don't win and the teams around us also do badly? Does that make the "must win" null and void, so we can move it on to the next game again?

No cant "null and void" this one, not when u look at the fixture list, this is a game we have to win if you cant beat a team virtually down who can we beat?, like others have said we cant keep saying "oh well theres always the next game and it doesnt matter if the others lose as well" we still have to pick up the points to haul us out of the R zone, we are running out of games and have some tough opponents coming up

Would it be fair to say we are running out of must-win games?

I drew a line after we didn't beat Sheff Utd, we then won 3 out of 3 (false hope) and since then have reverted strictly to type.

For what it's worth I don't think we will get more than 5 points from the 3 remaining home games, that leaves us probably wanting 10 points from the 5 away games... we will do very, very well if we can take it to the last day....

It's very simple Mr Wotte, go out there and collect the three points,

no I don't want excuses or your lifestory, just the points.

No, 0-0 doesn't count, it must be all three - and remember, less chat more points - that's all we need, off you go now....

Oh good, another must win game

As I said before Blackpool, our success record this season in must win games is HOW good? ................Like about zero percent???

This should have been a nah don't give a sh*t about game, now we'll draw it or heaven forbid lose it...

grrrr

It's an overused phrase, but yes, if we can't win this one then there really is no hope. Charlton are pretty much down already - Phil Parkinson has said as much publicly now - that does however mean the pressure will all be on us, and we know what happens when that is the case.

That said, have faith - we are more than capable of thumping them. A critical game for Wotte - he has to get them fired up AND performing.

we need to win this one

that's why it'll be the first game I've been to since the Man Utd cup game - its time for all they stay aways like me to show they still care - and maybe be part of the crowd that makes the difference like in the old Dell days

I haven't been for a while as the Forest and Doncaster games sucked the heart right out of me!

And the Man Utd game just felt like a sham - a pointless exercise if you like

time for a rallying call perhaps!

a protest march against Wilde and Lowe before the game even - if it makes the difference

Forest have just signed Blackstock on loan for the rest of the season, it would be highly ironic if he kept them up and meant that Saints went down.

Rumours are they will pay £2.2m for him to make it permanent, I think forest will stay up now.

You must rate Blackstock more highly than I do then.

What difference will he make to forest at the rate of a goal every 3.5 games?

Sounds like the panic button is being pushed down at' City Ground.7 loanees of which they can put 5 on the team sheet.

well tbh, I think no matter if we win, lose or draw, we're still down and it won't be an walkover, if anything, I think charlton will nick it.

The reason I think this is I've seen charlton twice this season, and their centre-backs are 6"3 and 6"2 respectively, and what do we do under wotte?...Hoooooooooooooof- boring and ineffective unless you have a huge lump of a centre-forward, which we do not

I see him a lot more than you do, I just read that its £1.7m if they stay up which is a very good deal, even if he is QPRs top scorer despite only playing half a season.

Selling him and buying BWP cost saints ~£3m.

The problem with this game is 6 teams directly above us play each other. So that means possibly 3 teams could win. If those teams are Norwich,Plymouth then we are screwed. If we fail to win i don't think we will be coming back from 7 points behind with 6 games remaining. 2 of those being against Wolves and the current in form scoring for fun Burnley. That means we would need to win 2 and draw 1 while hoping Norwich and Plymouth both lose their next 3 games just to get on level terms.

Basically in short if we draw/lose and Plymouth/Norwich win that will probably be it. I don't think we can then expect to go to Watford and Wolves and get wins. Draws perhaps. If that happens we will be confirmed down if we lose to Wolves having lost to Watford the pervious game.

So Charlton is a must win game. No excuses. They are an awful team who have won once away all year. However they have scored 16 goals away while we have scored 18 at home. So chances are this will not be a goal fest. This is the game to either keep us in the hunt ot to take us out of it. Must win at all costs, a draw will not be good enough with the others playing each other.

to be fair we would worry if;

they were top of the league

fighting for automatic promotion

fighting for play offs

mid table and no pressure

fighting relegation

so perhaps being cr@p but nothing to play for is not the worst situation;)

(still worried tho!)
