27th November

Who'd have thought it...Portsmouth council supporting Southampton for a World Cup bid.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nicole Cortesse said that we could only step in if Pompey pulled out as we missed the initial deadline. That time has come!

Would be nice to hear from Saints what is happening (if anything).

Finance boss Roger Ching said: 'If the stadium was not built, the FA would have to find somewhere else for matches to be played.

Any ideas ?

You mean, do we know of any new (ish) 32,000-capacity stadiums hanging about?

I'm sure if we all thought very hard we could think of somewhere. And it's a chance to help Pompey out by having them incur the bidding costs but have the games, and the profits, go elsewhere.

Winners all round.

This should be a straightforward bid for Saints / Council to make, the ground was even designed for expansion requirements, and any shortfall in accommodation requirements could be easily solved by parking a cruise liner in the docks. Proven history as a city and a football club and fits the hole in the map of grounds spread across the country. Games in the football and Rugby world cup would give huge international exposure for the city to sell itself. I noticed solent university even had advertising boards at the England v Brazil game in Qatar so they could even chip in a few quid as a sponsor.

QE2 isn't doing much these days.

Marcus to buy back the QE2 at a knock down price from the cash strapped Dubian's and turn it into a hotel.

That would make a great selling point for future events in the city and would give the wow factor this City desperately needs.

Clever idea. Could work.

Southampton v Portsmouth is an absolute no brainer really. I hope the city council makes a bid if they can.

I think it would be so so so good to come to Southampton really good. I am really looking forward to the rugby but the football word cup would be massive.

Please please.

If someone is organised they shoud get a load of signitures and give it to the council. Would be soooooo worth it.

it also says that portsmouth would have to meet the costs of moving games if they sign up and fail to build a new stadium. does that mean they would pay for the expansion of SMS?!?!?!?!

Oh good thinking was on the same track there my self, now that would be HILARIOUS. Trouble is they have to agree to go ahead with the deal, which seems unlikely from that article.

Lets hope NC has been in touch with the City Council & has some plans in place, for Southampton to take their place.

Southampton would easily get it if they got their act together, the only competitors in the southern area are portsmouth (bid floundering - like the club), Bristol (nowhere near enough demand for a 40k stadium) and Plymouth (LOL).

All Marcus has to do is get an architect draw up some imaginative plans for the SMS extension, get the council on board it would be in the bag.

Does anyone really expect the City Council to do anything proactive and beneficial to the City of Southampton. Christ they can't even maintain the City Quay.

That just about sums it up. Kuti has done more to maintain our waterside heritage than Southampton council. The city of portsmouth have made the most of their naval heritage and developed the run down docks area into a thriving shopping/nightlife/residential/tourist area. We have a delapidated pier, a Thai restuarant and a park with a Mr Whippy van. How can we expect Southampton to do anything so ambitious as staging World Cup games?

You could look at it the other way round though! With the World Cup, they may be able to get private sector/outside investors to stump up the money that they should be, thus getting all these (thus far) pie in the sky schemes under way, with little or no outlay from them.

Agreed. Now let's hope the powers-that-be feel the same way.

Something like this would be quite nice for any SMS expansion...

It has been reported that Leicester City Council have said they need to commit £15m of local taxpayers money to support their bid as world cup hosts. Similar tale in Liverpool (altho they seem awash with EC and NEDA aid)

Cant see anyone down this way underwriting that sort of expense for perhaps 1 game

Bad news is Dave Richards (Premier League Chairman) has quit. Making our bid to host in 2018 a little shaky.

That is the same man who introduced the arab to pompey.......i would suggest it is a plus he is gone. Not that i expect or neccessarily want England to host it.

On the other hand, we run an annual showcase boat show on our waterfront which is renowned and respected throughout the Yachting world. It show that we can do these things. The key to Portsmouth's waterfront developments is precisely that the run down docks area needed development, as the port is in decline as the Royal Navy declines. There are now more Admirals than ships. Gunwharf was formerly HMS Vernon and the shops are just a collection of Factory Shop outlets. Granted that the Restaurant and cinema complex is good and we ought to do something similar with Ocean Village regarding the restaurants. But our docks are thriving, with so much capacity coming into the port with the passenger liners, that it is being contemplated that we should feed Portsmouth some of the crumbs and scraps from our surplus.

But as we are talking about what the respective Councils may or not do, Portsmouth's have been good when considering the redevopment of Gunwharf, the Spinnaker Tower, etc, but rather negative when it comes to the redevopment of their delapidated old football stadium. Our Council on the other hand, were very proactive when it came to accommodating our football club when Lowe lost us Stoneham.

Just been told that we can't step in.

Its either Plymouth or Bristol for the 'South'.

Told by someone that would actually know or a random mate? Link?

Always likely that the FA would stick to the deadlines and the administration/takeover screwed us making a bid. Abit harsh as it isn't Cortese or Liebherr's fault.

Agree totally, no wonder Pompey (city as a whole, not the football club) have made inroads in recent years.

Working in Pompey and working with the council on some projects I really notice a difference.

doesn't make sense for either tbh. (well imo anyway)

all we'd have to fork out is probably about 15-20m to just add to the stadium. We've hosted internationals before and the links (airport/rail etc) are pretty much there. It could even open up the opportunity to develop the track next to the stadium.

For a start....these 2 cities need a ''stadium'' fit to host international matches....

This world cup bid will typically decend into a farce.

Nope, wrong I'm afraid. PCC have been very positive and helpful regarding a new ground for Pompey. In fact, they already have a blueprint for the redevelopment of Fratton Park.

Fact is Pompey no longer want a new ground. They do not have the money now that their sugar daddy has gone. With premiership gates of less than 20k, supporters who cannot afford premiership prices and large amounts of fan apathy it would be commercial suicide for them to build a new stadium.

Pompey are living beyond their means and have done so for a few years now.

Pompey had earmarked £20million for the project, which they felt was a reasonable level.

According to some influential people that wanted Pompey to host, the World Cup would have brought in excess of £100million into the area.

Not a bad return if true, but more of a risky investment than others at a time when Councils are being a bit more cautious with money. Thank fook ours didnt invest in Icelandic banks.

It's a guaranteed three games for any host stadium, and that's assuming the World Cup doesn't expand beyond 32 teams by 2018/2022. Also, you get to keep the stadium...
