NickG Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Rather than particular players, which position do you feel most needs improving on (or more back up)? To me the following are fine; gk - two strong players rb - new guy / murty /James lb -Harding / Seaborne /Mills cb jaidi/fonte perry/thomas Seaborne/Lancashire Martin/Saville lm - think Pardew likes Lallana there, can't see us getting better - Mills/Holmes/Papa/Antonio can cover Areas to improve rm -I like Papa there but reading about likes Danns running a game from there in higher league I think we could possibly improve on him or Antonio. cm Hammond/Schneiderlin/Wooton/James/Gobern forward Lambert/Papa/Connolly/Paterson Think Lambert and Connolly are plenty good enough for first choice but more injury cover would be good. Personally would go for CM - first name on team sheet player. (would be happy with any of those 3 areas)

up and away Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Not trying to put a downer on the players already signed, but our real problem area is midfield? Fonte absolutely class for this division and I would imagine the new RB should be an improvement, but this is not where we will make great leaps forwards. Just have to be patient and wait and see what else Santa belatedly brings us.

Heard Pardew raving about James in more than one interview - he rates him highly. James has been been better at RM than CM - at any rate he's a totally different kind of midfielder from Mellis - he's p*ss poor at breaking into the space or getting behind the defense- one reason why he's incapable of delivering the ball anywhere near the byline. anybody with brain wouldn't try and fit this square peg in this particular round hole. SaintDonkey Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 More cover up front. Crab Lungs Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 (edited) Cover for Lambo in the Jon Parkin/Darius Henderson/Steve Howard mould. Brussels Saint Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Danns would be a good choice as Waigo is an effective striker. This way you have Danns/LJ/Antonio competing for the RM spot and essentially Connolly/Papa competing to partner Lambert. Only big issue is should Lambert get injured we have no other classic target striker in the squad, so although people might not like it, Pericard would be a useful reserve addition. If you are getting greedy then Stock would be awesome to compete for the 2 CM spots with DH & MS. Of the people we have been linked with, I reckon in order of importance you would go for: 1, Danns 2, Pericard 3, Stock Having said that the 3 signings so far have been the least predicted ones on the grapevine, so I suspect it will be none of the above. Window Cleaner Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Not fussed myself, I'd rather see players going out of the door before any more come in. I'd like to see our new players with shirt numbers other than 40,45 or 50. Above all I want to see Saganowski and Thomas gone by the end of the month, even if we do end up paying someone to take them off our hands, they are the past, the demise and have no place here now.. Seany S Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 We need a striker. Paterson is a good prospect but lacks confidence, hence why he previously declined to goout on loan (correct me if I am wrong on that count). Waigo is an exciting pacy player who has scored a few but for me gets caught offside far too much and cannot possibly lead the line on his own. Jamie White has only just come back from loan and is young and inexperienced. Lambert and Connolly are both excellent but if either of them get injured or need a rest (and Lambo has looked tired on occasion) we are pretty weak in that department. I can't comment on Barnard or Jackson as I have never seen them play. What we need is a player like the Argentine lad at Leeds, he seems to link up well with Beckford, gets stuck in and is all-action. Not suggesting we would sign him, mind. Brett Pitman can appear lazy and a bit cumbersome at times but I reckon he has a bit extra in his locker to step up a level. And that comes from someone who has watched him a few times this year and seen him score. As for Brian Stock on the midfield front, he was always excellent for the Cherries, used to enjoy watching them when they had Stock and Fletcher in midfield, with Hayter and Big Fletch up front. Stock always looked a cut above. I hope we can sign him.
Saint_Ash Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Got to be a forward, Connolly is struggling with fitness and lambert cannot shoulder everything! Agree with this fella. Jon Otsewotsit coming in has freed James up to be a midfielder so with Lallana, James, Morgan, Hammond, Waigo, Antonio vying to be first teamers across the midfield with the younger lads coming in I would say it has to be a striker that we get in. Saint_Ash Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 It's actually pretty good that with these signings of defenders it creates more opportunities and flexibilty around the squad. Like what TDD is saying about Waigo going up front with James as right midfielder, that's also a good idea. I'd personally like to see Waigo tried more up front, instead of hanging off the shoulder of the last man though he should stand 2 foot in front of him! up and away Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Barnard or Jackson up front, Stock and Danns in midfield and I think we will be well balanced! At the start of this, I would have been more than happy with just Stocks and Danns, that is the one area we can really take this team forward. Get control of the midfield and we have a lot of decent players we can use as forwards, Lallana, Waigo, Connoley, Lambert. Even though James has problems at RB, it's a completely different issue when you have control of the midfield. We have also seen the other side of this coin, fail to gain control of the midfield and those excellent forwards we already have become neutered. Arizona Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 I would say LM. That should free up Lallana to play up front. I'd still like another striker, but the LM spot would be my priority.
Cabrone Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 For me it's got to be another striker to challenge\cover for Lambert and Connolly, preferably a bit of a bruiser. Although we have arguably the best forward line in the division all it needs is 1 injury and we look vulnerable.
SNSUN Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Aside from the fact that I'd be suprised if there was ONLY one more player brought in, if it WERE only one player brought in, then I would suggest we need a striker. Lambert and Connolly are really the only two experienced strikers we have, and even then Connolly is not guaranteed to play every game. Paterson is not experienced and seems out of favour, although I don't doubt he could do a job if we needed him to. All we have bar those three is Waigo, who tends to play more on the right, and Lallana, who tends to play on the left. We need a new striker, especially with the number of games we have to play this season, and due to the fixture congestion, I would even go so far as to say we need TWO strikers. They don't have to be expensive, we could pay for one and sign someone like Mifsud as the other.
SuperMikey Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 I agree with everyone else really, CM and CF are the priority now. I liked the sound of Mifsud when he was mentioned on another thread, he's still on a free and supposedly training with us with a view for a 6 month contract. As for CM, i'd be happy with either Danns or Stock, but if I was pushed i'd go for Stock. If we can sign any of those 3 though i'll be very happy. CB Fry Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Backup for Lambert, at the moment if he gets injured it's season over. What he said. If we are spending one and a half million on a centre back you'd hope we have a plan for a decent striker who can fire us somewhere near the playoffs. S-Clarke Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 The area of the team which isn't quite clicking for me, is midfield. We're not quite seeing the best of lambert at the moment because this area isn't as balanced as it needs to be. So i'd hope we sign up a midfielder before the window.... preferably someone with a bit of energy and a consistent passer, someone who keeps it on the floor and gets the rest of the side playing football. I want us to get away from this horrible urge of playing hoofball. We've sorted out the CB position - i thought we were crying out for a ball playing CB and we have that now in fonte....now we just need that little bit more drive and balance through midfield. Another striker would be great - but it's no point unless the service through to them is good.
