Team to tame the Shrews (Build up thread)

May be a bit early but thought it might be interesting to guess whether we'll go with a full strength team or not. If you consider that we could make 10 changes from Tuesday and still put out

-------------Bart----------------

Richardson Jaidi Martin Dickson

Puncheon Schneiderlin Wotton  Holmes

------ Guly --- Bignall ------------

Doesn't look too bad, does it?

BTW, really looking forward to their fans' rendition of "When the Shrews go marching in"

If Bignall does not get permission to play, a possible debut could be on the cards for Doble, or NA may revert back to a Lambert/Guly combo IMO....

I don't think you're far off though - could be that all the subs from Tuesday may start on Saturday...

I'd certainly keep Oxo and Lallana on the bench. The Wotton bit was tongue in cheek - probably will be Morgan and Hammond since if Chaplow is here he may not get permission. But I think Dickson, Jaidi, Martin, Bart in particular are too good to be just playing reserve, sorry "development" games and they should be able to do a job.

I dread thinking that we won't win easily. Shrewsbury is my local team and I work with far too many people waiting to gloat on Monday if we slip up.

Saints for the first round of the JPT put out the strongest side maybe bar Jaidi/Martin.

The FA Cup is a more prestigious competition, with more prize money and potential future earnings at stake. I doubt there will be wholesale changes to the team against a team flying high only one league below.

You might be right but I would still pick a team without Lallana, Fonte, Davis, Harding, Hammond, Chaplow, Lambert and Barnard for this one. It is completely pointless. We have no hope of winning the FA Cup and no need for further ticket money from getting a "glamour" draw. I would like us to win the game as winning is fun and the cup is fun but this is a valuable opportunity to give some players a run-out against a decentish team.

Pardew's theory was that we put out the strongest team in all competitions and try to get as far as possible. This certainly worked last season with a nice FA Cup run and the JPT win. This season however our priority is certainly only the league. Adkins recognises this and doesn't need a cup run to lift spirits, as we did last season.

However, regardless of who starts we should not have a problem turning Shrewsbury over. Even though they are performing well in L2, so are we in L1 and we would be comfortable in the Championship with this team.

I'm not arguing that Shrewsbury are a pushover or that we don't want to win. My point is that we really do now have a strong squad and most of the "reserve" players should be able to deliver against any League 1/2 opposition and need serious match practice. They'll also know it's a chance to impress and challenge for regular places and will maybe even encourage the others.

Exactly.

I would be surprised if the team below was not capable of beating Shrewsbury at home, if it performs properly:

------------------------Bart---------------------

Richardson--------Jaidi---Martin (is he fit?)-----Dickson

Chamberlain-----Wotton-----Schneiderlin-------Holmes

---------------------Guly------------------------

---------------Bignall / Doble----------------------

I don't see why people want wholesale changes. Carlisle is 7 days later which is plenty of time. I'd rather Saints put a strong side out and won on Saturday than rest players.

I agree we need to keep on winning and playing with a settled team

Its all about envolving the squad and getting them used to how NA wants them to play, also gives them a chance to stake a claim for a starting place.

I'd prefer one or two changes and a victory, rather than 8 or 9 changes and a defeat to a good team from the league below.

They are a good team from a league below and im sure our squad will be more than good enough for them, with players playing to prove to the gaffer they deserve to get a run in the team

I don't want to see wholesale changes but I would like to see a few players rested. As great as it is to have a run in the cup and it would be good to get to Rd 3 and pull "a big team", promotion this year is paramount.

After Saturday we have 3 tough games where no less than 7 points should be the target. We have a good squad so some changes should not disrupt things too much and indeed mau well produce a really good performance as those currently out of the team may well force Adkins hand for Carlisle.

My starting XI would be;

Bart

FR. Jaidi. Martin. Dickson

OX. Chaplow. Morgan. Holmes

Lambert. Barnard

Impact Players

Davis

Seabourne

Lallana

Doble

Wotton

Guly

Punch

With Fonte off on his hols for the weekend and possible Davis too, keeping a winning team is not going to happen. In my OP I said tongue-in-cheek that we could make 10 changes, and that's not going to happen either. I expect something like

---------- Bart -----------------

Richardson Jaidi/Martin Seabourne Harding/Dickson

Puncheon Hammond Chaplow Dickson/Holmes

---- Guly ------- Lambert/Barnard

Subs: Lallana or Wotton if we want to give AL a rest, Schneiderlin, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Barnard/Lambert, Martin/Jaidi, GK (don't know who's available), Doble

Don't Just take the 'Shrews' for granted. My nipper and I were there when they beat us 2 - 1 a few years back and we were a Prem Side! Trouble was the 'No Brain Oaf ' was in charge.Need I say more?

Nobody is taking them for granted, however a team consisting of Dickson, Holmes, Puncheon, Jaidi et. al. should beat them.

What if we field a reserve team and go 2-0 down????

I think you're way wide of the mark. Adders fancies the Cup so we will go in strength, resting only those who are knackered and maybe AC 'cos he "cramps up" whatever that means in my native Hampshire English. Richardson is only just back and needs the run, so too Seaborne and I wouldn't want to be the poor sodding coach who has to tell Dan Hard-ing that he's not included.

Fairly strong line up IMO.

Bart - Gives Davis a break, I don't have a shred of worry about Bart covering.

Frazer - Still needs match fitness

Martin - A welcome run out for him I would think, having been out for a while

Seaborne - To keep some familiarity in the back four.

Dickson - Gives Harding a break and Ryan can show what he can do.

The OC - undroppable after that performance on Tuesday. A chance to show his skills on the bigger stage. (Televisually-wise)

Chappers - if Preston let us play him, I'd keep him in.

Morgan - as he was dropped on Tuesday he should be fresh.

Puncheon - That's right, on the left, and it gives Lallana a break.

Guly - Skillz McGrillz

Lambert - Play him until he scores from open play, dammit!

subs: Davis, Harding, Jaidi, Hammond, Lallana, Barnard, Wotton.

Big win IMO, I know it's the FA cup and upsets happen but I really can't see it.

Yes, but what if our strong players pick up injuries or suspensions? I agree Saints shouldn't send out a reserve team, but a few players rested wouldn't hurt.

One thing seems unanimous though: Bart must play. :)

Difficult decisions today, sit upstairs with a broken A/C system listening to the Under Perform Group's SaintsPlayer dropping in and out.

Or sit downstairs where the A/C is fine and watch the Egg chasers in HD

hmmmmmmmmm

Move your computer downstairs! Nothings that bad that you have to watch egg chasing over listening to Saints, however bad the feed!!
