Should I support Winchester City?

Someone I know, who supports Pompey, says that because I was born in Winchester and not Southampton, I'm not supporting my local team and thus am a glory hunter. He will not accept an counter-arguments that I have given so far so I was wondering whether any of you would have anything that would shut him up.

Another friend of mine, who supports Saints, kicks him in the balls everytime he says this.

Pompey supporters are not worth argueing with cos they're ignorant c**** and you don't need a reason to kick one in the balls anyway...should be a reflex action.

I was born in Hythe. Should I support Hythe and Dibden only? Or maybe AFC Totton, a bit further, but not as far as Southampton?

I didn't realise there was a rule about what club we should support. Just ignore him. Most people support their nearest *professional* club, AND sometimes their local semi-pro/other Saturday afternoon teams.

The Skate is an idiot, and unless he was born in the Fratton Park bogs, there is probably some tinpot pub team that is closer to him than Portsmouth FC. Why doesn't he support them?

I would suggest finding out which area of Pompey he is from, search for a more local team than Pompey, and tell him that he should be supporting them instead. See how he reacts when he has to turn up to the Paulsgrove FC*

I have found out that you CAN support two clubs. I support my local semi pro club AFC Totton and of course Saints. So you can support Winchester City & Saints. Its finding the time to watch both that could be the problem!

Hmmm, tough one. I was born in Winchester Road, Bassett, about ten (twenty?) minutes walk from the Dell; my father played for the Saints and so my natural priorities were to support them. I lived in Winchester for 20 years and coached one of the City teams and refereed in the Winchester and Hampshire leagues and so supported City when i could. I lived in Sholing for a while when I was young. Should I support them as well? Oh and from the age of 5 until I got married I lived in Kent with Millwall as my nearest team.

Bugger, I've forgotten my train of thought. Just kick the skate in the pods and tell him to do one.

I was born in Chandlers Ford in Eastleigh and grew up there - but have lived in Winchester for over 10 years now. I've always supported Saints and I am the third generation of my family to do so. My dad also played youth football for Saints back in the day. And I'm always bumping into my cousins in and around St Marys on matchdays so for me it's a family thing. I was born to it!

I have a soft spot for both Eastleigh and Winchester City though.

My brother-in-law is a Pompey fan but he now lives on Botley - he son was born in Southampton much to his disgust! Does that make him a Saints fan?

Saying that my nephew does have a season ticket at St Marys with me and my Dad! He also goes to games at Fratton Park with his dad. He's got both Pompey kits and Saints kits - a Pompey duvet cover and Saints pyjamas!

Your mate is a muppet and not worth arguing with. Ignore him. I have been watching Saints for 40 years now and have brought you up properly to support the Saints.

PS. I am TOM8558's dad. At least he is posting on his own login this time.

Interesting admission by this Portsmouth supporter that supporting saints is tantamount to seeking glory. Maybe some of them do know their place.

)

More likely to have been conceived in them I'd say.

Also, my skate brother is always reminding me that Pompey are more local to where I was born that Southampton. I remind him that Calais Park Rangers would be more likely to get my support than that horrible bunch.

Winchester City are crap btw.

I'm assuming as you were born in Winchester it was at the Royal County Hospital? If so i'd point out the first 2 letters of the hospitals postcode to your friend. Should be enough to shut him up. Then kick him in the balls, for choosing to be a skate.

I'm from Winchester lived in soton for 2 years so I sometimes get that from people, but we live in SO post codes so I state I support my local team as we share the same post code.

Also have a mate who plays for city so would be weird supporting them.

Either way, at least you'd be supporting a team within 20 miles of each other. Try living in the South-West where 99.9% of the population support either Liverpool or Manchester United. It makes me sick.

So your skate mate admits we're winning things and thus are worthy of glory hunting status??

i's counter that anyone who supports a club through two relegations cannot be defined as plastic... and then I'd ask him where his season ticket is and where he was born. Smart money says there's a small club near him that he should be supporting...

support ? support !

I always think of non-league teams in the area, as "little-brothers" in a manner of speaking.

I have relatives in Salisbury and always looked for their results when they were doing so well with Nick Holmes at the helm, and hope they can regain their former status.

Eastleigh have done well in the years that Doddsy and Hughes have guided them, hope they can move up next season.

Totton (though lowly) seem to have taken their league by storm and I hope the success continues.

If you live in the area, and don't travel to away games, then support your local team. They need the revenue, I'm sure.

In days bygone when there wasn't the same deadly rivalry between Saints and Pompey, fans would often go to the Dell for home games and to Fratton... when we played away.

That must have taken some courage..or maybe... they were just supporting another local side.

Just say that being born in Hampshire you wanted to support the best team in the county hence why you're a Saints fan following that it would have to be Aldershot

I think his original point was following Winchester City , who are non- league, and if I read correctly ... the guy lives In /near Winchester...so why not?

As a matter of interest, I usually get around to looking at the Aldershot results..and indeed Farnborough who were in a play-off place in their league, but I read the original thread as the "local connection, in which case Eastleigh and Totton are literally bordering on Southamptons municipal borders, whereas I've only been through Aldershot on a bus on my way to So'ton.

haha this coming from a team that will only have 8 first team players at the end of the season! If it's an iceburg coming our way then fook me the whole of the artic must be gearing up to the smell of fish!

Load of old ********. I've never lived in Southampton, was born in Ascot (I don't even know if they have a football team), although my parents lived (still do) in Windsor. So maybe I should support Windsor and Eton FC, but I was encouraged to support Southampton in 1989 and I've been loyal to them since.

Glory Supporting? Hardly. We've had more to cry about than cheer in the 22 years (17 actively) I've been supporting Saints.

Like most people from Fareham, I and my 3 sons were all born in Portsmouth (for 3 of us it was Fratton) as it's the quickest maternity unit to get to' we all support the Saints and dislike Pompey wi a passion. I think it's irrelevant where you were born as it's usually just the locality of an NHS Building. Family connections are far more important and that's why I started to go to the Dell each week from 1973 till presen t:)

i think the post code argument is the strongest argument. winchester is an SO post code and you may have to point out that stands for SOuthampton as we know there a bit slow on the uptake down there and that his is not in memory of a tellytubby

Tell him the rules are you support your closest proper team whilst harbouring a soft spot for your little local side, so just as you are Saints and Winchester fan he should be Saints and Portsmouth fan.

Born and raised in North Kent I supported Gravesend & Northfleet (Ebbsfleet now) and the Gills until I went to uni.

Moved to Winchester after uni in 1987 and started to go to The Dell with mates.

Never got near the top of the season ticket waiting list ( got to about 198 in the end) but got season tickets at St Marys

My sons were born in Winchester and although at uni have always been Saints daft.
