Oriol Romeu - Official: Signs 8 Month Contract

Hopefully he turns out to be Jimmy Case MKII  - when Lawrie Mc persuaded him to join us for what he thought would be his last hoorah on the pitch for a season - 6 years later that Clown Branfoot binned him off, despite Jimmy still being an effective midfield general.

It was McMenemy who advised Branfoot to get rid of him.

Anyone else think it’s odd that Romeu hasn’t been announced yet? Rumour was he’d be ‘in and around the squad’ for tonight.
Please not another SR f*ck up…🫣

Anyone else think it’s odd that news of Romeu signing was leaked the evening/day after the manager was sacked despite not being ready to sign and definitely not ready to play in his first game since May?

This is going to end in tears, isn't it?

It would be another unbelievable PR disaster for SR if it goes tits up. Not to mention a disaster for the team.

Makes you wonder if he’ll be with the squad for tonight (not for selection), just with the group

Unlikely I’d have thought. Medical yesterday supposedly so the earliest he could’ve trained would be today. First team squad may not even be at staple wood, if they are it would only be for a very light session then travel. So prob more value in Romeu being put through the paces where, maybe a bit of one on one to find his fitness levels and a bit of focussed ball work to get his sharpness going. He also may have to return to Spain to get him family and some belongings.

Similar story really for Saturday. Tomorrow could be a day off or light recovery session only. Friday a preparation session for the first team Saturday. So he could get in the group but any value is going to come from next week onwards IMO. Romeu seems to me be a leader by example rather than words. So as soon as he gets on the training ground proper, the better.

so wheres the announcement?

Win today, dim the negativity tomorrow with Romeu, lots of puff pieces in the media on Fri, play the team bottom of the league and in admin on Sat.

What a week for SR

I particularly enjoyed the interview from Shane Long about his return: https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/25596917.shane-long-welcomes-oriol-romeus-return-southampton-fc/

Quote

“Getting someone as experienced as Ori, if you imagine how he plays, he also trains like that every day. He does everything at 100 per cent in life.

“He will be positive for the dressing room too, to lift the boys, and get the best out of everyone. He will be a leader on and off the pitch.

“We used to have arguments in training because he could two-foot you - he is 100 per cent at everything.

“He tackles and gets himself stuck in a lot. Over his time at Southampton, he learned to keep it simple as well.

“When he won the ball back, he would give it to players like Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic to create something.

“I know the centre-backs loved having him there because if you’d gotten past Ori, you were doing really well.

“He is going to up the training standards and lead by example. On the pitch, his quality will shine through. When he left in 2022, he was a big loss for that dressing room.”

Confirms what we all believe Romeu is like off the pitch, in the dressing room and on the training pitch. Standards are slowly coming back. The club will no longer be a well paid jolly for the lads.

Insane signing for this level.

Actually, forget 'this level'. Insane signing.

Every one of the wasters in this group should look to Romeu as a model player.

I can only hope this is the turning point for our season

Oriol Romeu: "I feel lucky to be back, and motivated to push as much as I can. I've felt around the club and the city how much respect and love I'm getting. It's special. I want to give it back with good games, good performances, and with professionalism and respect."

I don’t think you will find a single saints fan who isn’t made up with this. It feels right on every level. Even if it doesn’t go perfectly he is a quality player who cares deeply for the club and will make a contribution on and off the pitch. Welcome back Ori!

Absolutely. He is a the type of pro and player that Flynn Downes could only dream of becoming, given they play in the same position.

Flynn threw his toys out of his pram when he was trash in the premier league and could not move to Ipswich. At the same time, Romeu, who was already loved at this club, just had a season at Barcelona and acts as a supreme Pro.
