My concern with the academy is that they may not see a clear pathway anymore. When they see us ignoring our own academy and spending £££ on other clubs 18 and 19 year olds then I can imagine there is a bit of unrest to be honest. (Even more so when they see what we're paying their 18/19 year olds I guess)

I think many of us saw JJ's progress last season, when he also made England apps. for his age group.

but also a  certain amount of satisfaction, in that despite Morgan returning to the club that previously rejected him,

that Saints have picked up a healthy 6 million transfer fee (plus add-ons, I believe).

Not sure how he sees his future at Chelsea, but it's fairly certain that it'll be some time before he could

even become a regular on their first team bench, whereas he might well have got game time with us 

- with a little more patience. 

NOTE:  Tyler Dibling's misadventure with his aborted move to Chelsea last summer shows that the grass 

is not always greener in a rich man's garden.

to be fair "trousers" .... most of the young players we've signed this season have shown up well and

despite their age we see that they have good skills, whereas many of our own young talents who are

 "on the up " are still some way from making the first team bench at this level. 

The other factor is that the " physical demands " of the step-up from youth football to the Prem. are enormous

and we have seen in the past. Despite their excellent showings last season both Broja and Livramento were

injured by mid season, and were scarcely fit enough to contribute anything afterward the New Year.

 

This season, despite starting well ...Larios, Lavia, Edozie and Bella-Kotchap (twice) have all lost significant 

game time through injury and it's clear that young bodies, (more used to playing youth football) simply

cannot stand up to the rigours demanded of a players' physique at Prem. level. and may not recover as quickly 

as more experienced players may do.  There is a world of difference between starting well - after a good 

pre-season - than slowly recovering from a painful injury in mid-season, and beginning to kick a ball again.

 

* Historical note: comment from an Alan Shearer interview (a former Saints talent who started his career slowly).

.....There is a lot of difference between being  " fit enough to play, than being properly... " match fit ". 

Being " fit enough " may be an achievement, but the big question is .. are you now better than - the other guy?

You'd like to think so but given the contempt they sometimes show to our own supporters I doubt they'd give a second glance to some goading of our own fans. If anything, Steele and his ex-Millwall Security Rottweiller might use it as an excuse to close a few more rows of seats in the home area.

Edit - every other report puts the price at £2.5-£3m. Secretscout says £2.5m, and I'd take him as an authority on something Chelsea related.

He was 15/16 at the time, come on. 

This ‘attitude problem’ is utter bollocks by the way. He’s worked as hard as anyone to get where he is and this one move will change his life forever. He will also be far away from Nathan Jones and the train wreck we currently are, and returning to one of the biggest teams in the world where he spent many years as a kid.

It was a long time ago I was too pissed to remember, walked up to him whilst he was stood in a group at the end of the night and said “I don’t like you, you’re a cunt and if you’ve got anything to say about it I’ll see you outside” before I was dragged away.

Monday at work the regional manager was in and I had to explain myself, they very sternly said I was an idiot but he was happy to put it down to drunken stupidity. So fair play to him, was a bit of legend at work for a while though.

Just listened to The Hard Truth podcast with Peterborough owner on. He was talking about having taken Jimmy Jay Morgan on loan from Chelsea. Said they have no chance of signing him as he’s on £20k+ per week currently at Chelsea.

What if you end up like Dom Ballard, Ryan Seagar or Sam Hoskins though and never sign a 4 year deal at £20k p/w? That deal sets you up for life. You might never get into the first team and a bird in the hand and all that…

He can earn in 3 weeks what the average person earns in a year. Two or three years of that, invest the spare cash well and you are set for life. I guess it depends on whether your ambition is to be wealthy in its own right or be at the top. What he would he have gained by staying here? I don't think we've developed our young players for life beyond SFC very well at all. They've had loans which haven't developed them, and that hasn't helped them.

Since joining Chelsea, and getting over a serious injury, JJ has had half a season in league 2, this season in league 1. In all likelihood, the championship next season, if he's ready. 

He's playing, and now scoring. He's got the security of a decent contract, and it seems like his career is being well managed. 

Will he ever play for Chelsea, probably not, but they'll develop him for their gain, and that'll benefit him.

Err, JJ isn't Dibling. If we're doing daft comparisons, have you forgotten that Dom Ballard exists, as did Ryan Seager, etc etc.

Success in football is largely driven by talent and application.  My guess is that if he's good enough he'll get the sort of moves that Dibling and Livramento got but at the moment he's discovering whether he can match their success while earning (allegedly) £20K a week.  That's not a bad position to work from.

How is it daft, they're about as close and obvious a comparison as it's possible to make? They were born barely a month apart, poached by Chelsea within six months of each other. One has just made a £40m move to Everton, whilst the other is on loan in League 1, again.

None of those other players have the talent that Dibling and JJM apparently do. They might have done well for our youth team but nobody like Chelsea ever rated them enough to come in and nick them.

I'm going to flip that last question round and ask who it is you feel we've managed badly? Generally speaking, the players who've come through our academy have ended up at a level which suits them, we've not ruined their careers. Dibling was good enough for our first team, we never sent him on loan, so I don't understand the relevance anyway.
