Players in our 2011/12 promotion squad who were better than the equivalent players in our current squad:

Kelvin Davis

Bartosz Bialkowski

Jose Fonte

Morgan Schneiderlin

Jack Cork

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Dean Hammond

Richard Chaplow

Jason Puncheon

James Ward-Prowse

Adam Lallana

Billy Sharp

Rickie Lambert

David Connolly

Any I've missed...?

Didn't we sell Ox in that summer, so he was never part of the champ side? He was replaced by the infamous Steve De Ridder.

Puncheon I think had a strop that season, so wasn't part of the club. JWP was a squad/cup player only at that point.

Other than that I'd agree with your overall point. The spine was the most important thing there, once you get the spine right the rest can usually just slot in around it. We have a crappy spine nowadays.

A fairer compassion, IMO, is our away game at Plymouth (game 3) last time out in the Champ:

Bazunu

KWP

Bednarek

Stephens

Manning

Charles

Stu Armstrong

Adam Armstrong

Nathan Tella

Che Adams

Samuel Edozie

Subs brought on:

Sam Amo

Aribo

I think that's miles better imo.

AOC wasn’t part of that team tbf. Guly in place of Stewart, and Mr. square head himself Jos Hooiveld.

With Adam Armstrong playing in attacking midfield and doing a great job.

NOT as a lone number 9 because we haven't "got the correct wingers" 🤪😜

If we signed johansson we win that game yesterday . Amazing save from THB set up the second goal and no way bazunu should be getting beaten for that .. won’t happen obviously as we seem to have some weird fetish with bazunu but it’s such a no brainer to strengthen us massively

Seems we’re not the only ones struggling to get stuff done.

Seen quite a few premier league managers bemoaning the lack of transfer activity so far. Emery, Nuno, Marco Silva, Moyes, Potter, Perreira and Glasner I’ve seen having a whinge.

Going to be an interesting week.

Our squad was worse going into the Premier League then it was at Plymouth away the year before! Would be hilarious if I wasn’t so fucking disgraceful.

Couldn't agree more.

Creativity obviously is an issue but it's compounded by having a 4ft Gnome playing up front. I love AA on the left, he's great, but it's night and day with him playing there Vs no9

Can plan all they like but when the squad is too big in the first place, it’s difficult to adjust in the right direction especially when the decent players are leaving as well.

I was feeling a bit deflated after today’s result. Still find it difficult to comprehend how we didn’t get a positive result, we did more than enough. All the trendy people say stats are important and xG tells you a lot and that suggests we should have won 2-1. Football is made up of moments. Stoke took their chances today we had Lady Luck against us, along with poor finishing, but it happens.

All of a sudden the world is falling apart because we lost a game of football.

i just hope the Samaritans are adding extra resource in Southampton this week as there appear to be a good number of people on this forum who are teetering.

It has brightened my evening reading it all though, so thank you all.

Agreed... It always pays dividends being positive about Saints at the start of the season... You don't get to look foolish that way.... Ah....  ;)

That’s when you have to start taking a bath financially to write some wages and fees to clean the stables.

In the mid-90s, Hurlock, Dixon and other large contracts didn’t disappear by magic - they were paid up and it allowed Bally space to run things with Lawrie so Branfoot’s old faces weren’t hanging around. Plenty more were subsidised to lower divisions eg Wood. And we were skint in the 1990s adapting the Dell in its final years to Taylor Report, and saving for new stadium. So no excuses for SR.

Osvaldo had to be written off by Kat which cost a lot of money but had to be done.

SR are obsessed with turning a profit on every transaction no matter how appalling the player/transaction. To use Glen De La Cour’s analogy, when you shit your pants as badly as Rasmus and Solak did, you need to pay out both for shitting them in the first place and for new pants.

I smell club plant there. The fan blaming for 8 years of grotesque mismanagement is a constant theme from these little log-ins who pop up from time to time.

RIP my poor beautiful boy.

Krasnador wins 6-0, Eduard gets 1 goals 2 assists and a 10/10 rating and MOM and played the full 90.

Krasnador now top of the league, he's not going to sell his star asset unless he needs the cash no matter how much he cares about the player.

Am hoping he needs cash like Villa on deadline day.

I think the other piece to add is the fantastic youth system Saints had in place at that time.

maybe too many players to bin off what with PSR regulations to worry about. No idea, but it would certainly help for a faster reset to move on a number of players that at best would be loaned out.

The club could’ve been proactive in targeting players early. Looking at players going out of contract etc.

But nope we’re probably haggling over an extra million or two just to get the deal over the line

I was quite surprised that we got promoted that time but we did have a top goal scorer in Rickie Lambert and Martin Chivers in 1966 and MacDougal and Boyer in 1978

Last time Armstrong and Adams must have scored over 40 cannot see the current strikers scoring loads of goals with their current performances

I expect they did that but getting players to St Mary's is not easy these days as our squad continually Deteriorates

Yes, with the caveat if we sign some good attacking midfielders that allow for a switch of formation.

From our fav armenian X account - am not sure the president knows the quality of our team (in bold)

Spertsyan's contract expires in 2029, and not next summer: the hopes of supporters to see Edo play in a club from one of the top six leagues, including the Championship , may therefore not come to fruition. To date, Krasnodar has received only two offers for Spertsyan's transfer: from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for 8.5 million euros + 2 million, and from Southampton for 16 million dollars + 2 million + 5% sell-on clause. Furthermore, the transfer of funds from the English club, mentioned by the media, poses no difficulty. These are merely false excuses to justify the player's refusal to leave. Galitsky has persuaded the protégé to wait for a club more worthy of him, and insisted that at Krasnodar, he was a star and a favorite, whereas there, he would be an ordinary player. Consequently, given his long-term contract, it seems that Spertsyan will have to wait a little longer before realizing his European dream. This means that the Bulls' chances of winning the championship will increase.

Also hilariously if we still had Charly he would be perfect for the role but is instead playing in a brand new stadium in the premier league.

We are in championship and Rangers fans going in dry on Martin.

We’ve enquired for Rak-Sakyi, but we aren’t the only ones.

He wasn’t in the Palace squad today.

Hopefully one of the other interested teams sign him rather than us.  Unwanted by Palace, Sheffield United didn’t want to buy him after his loan spell, and quite frankly we already have Sam Edozie who has a similar record and would cost us nothing. No thanks.
That would be an underwhelming signing with a capital U.

Sounds about right for us then.  Another signing that won’t improve the first team.  Keep it up Johannes.

t has been a pleasure working with my contacts and friends for several years on all these transfer rumors surrounding Spertsyan.

But from today, we are ending the agreement to no longer focus on his case, we understand that Krasnodar will never let him go.
We will focus on other players outside of Russia.

Thank you all for your trust in this endless saga over all these years.

Well the chairman sounds a little scamp….

Honestly, what do I think about this story?

Ashamed.
There are no other words.

President Galitsky has stated several times that he wants to let his players go if that's their wish, he and even the coach have already stated that Spertsyan only has 1 year left on his contract at the club so he can sign wherever he wants,

Which is false, he lied because behind everyone's back, Galitsky extended Spertsyan's contract without declaring it publicly and we don't know when the extension was made.
But even his agent doesn't seem to be aware of this extension.

This is also why the release clause was not triggered in the last SaintsFC offer.

How can a professional club, which won the championship last year, which has stated several times that they are ready to let their player leave whenever they want, even on a free, how can this club afford to extend the contract of its star player without publicly declaring it?

It may not be illegal, but it lacks a great deal of professionalism, but it proves once again that Galitsky and Krasnodar are doing everything possible to ensure that Spertsyan remains in Krasnodar for life, despite their public statements.

The question we also ask ourselves is: why did Edo agree to extend?
Too much pressure? Possible, we know, we have examples and proof that Russian clubs put pressure on their best "foreign" players to make them stay, this was the case with Tiknizyan, Lokomotiv Moscow had refused all offers from European clubs before accepting the offer from the Serbians.
The same goes for Dynamo Moscow's pressure on Arsen Zakharyan to choose Russia over Armenia and then be free to go wherever he wants if there are offers in Europe.

Surely there's a clause in his previous contract that triggers a new extension? Who knows? Now that we've seen them lie publicly on numerous occasions, we know they're capable of anything.

In short, this championship is a championship to be avoided by Armenians, never trust businessmen because they are even capable of betraying one of their compatriots.
Galitsky is Armenian, but from today on he will not be considered as such, even if many have never considered him Armenian since he married a Russian woman and changed his name but that is his personal life, everyone has their own opinion.

To return to “football”
We understand better why all of Eduard Spertsyan's transfers have failed, he is stuck in his club despite everything he has done and achieved.

Tend to agree. I think he'd be another one clogging up the squad with players who are not quite the required level. We need better if we are to progress.

As has been obvious since July really, this is another 'top target' fail by SR. A constant theme sadly. No idea if he'd have been revolutionary for us or not, but he was clearly our main target in the attacking area - as was Gakpo, Ramos, O'Riley etc in past windows. Zero of these big moves over the line. We did manage to get BBD, Archer and Onuachu though at least.

Sigh.
