Assuming Rusk has left I wish him well. He was handed a poison chalice but he didn’t cover himself in glory and at times was a bit gutless when we literally had nothing to lose

Agree. Thought he came across extremely naive and a bit of a pillock

Coaching shake up looks good. Some good pedigree and a mix of backgrounds in amongst it.

Interested to see what difference changing the goalkeeping coach has. Feel a bit for Rusky, dropped in the shitter and above his level really, but he's a nice guy with a pretty dry sense of gallows humour -  guessing he didn't want to step back down and felt it was time for something new. Anyone know any more to it than that?

They can just pop on here to find all that out. Money saved there not replacing him.

MLG will be getting a hard-on

ffs! have corrected that!

I know what you mean about the wingers and brooks - but Edozie is another year older with regular footy under his belt, and we should have one of Dibbling/fernandes to supplement the side. We do need to strengthen in the attacking mid / winger section regardless, but i think we'll be about the same with only 1 of those 2 leaving.

Difficult one to justify IMO. (and tbh not really worth the conversation until another 6 weeks has past)

2 seasons ago we had:
Aribo, Smallbone, Downes, Charles, S Armstrong, Rothwell, Fraser, Alcaraz
A Armstrong, Brooks, Sulemana, Edozie, Mara, Adams, Stewart

It's arguably better than what we had last season apart from Fernandes. Has Dibling done more than Arma, Fraser, Brooks or Edozie would have done last season?

Clearly we are after a physical and pacey no9, to lead the line which I think is absolutely necessary.  Highly likely Aribo, Armstrong, Fraser, Sulemana, Dibling, Fernandes, Onuachu, all leave, leaving us with a starting place of:

Smallbone, Downes, Charles
Robinson, Edozie, Matsuki?,
Stewart, Archer, Juan? Brereton-Diaz?

For me we need atleast 4 signings in those areas, probably 5. I'm guessing some of Matsuki, Juan, Diaz also won't be here next season.

All this sounds positive - a clear out of the football dept top to bottom was needed and that’s what’s been delivered, with only Lallana (a late addition) remaining. Whether the new team works is obviously yet to be determined, however I don’t think we could have asked for a more decisive number of changes and the Championship is the best place for a new Management team to cut its proverbial teeth. Next job - get the squad sorted. I’m starting to get mildly excited to see where we go from here….roll on pre-season.

Strange that Lallana remains, inexperienced, but a good playing record. Someone at the club clearly rates him.

I think his admirers go back a long way to before his return to Saints - even Klopp reportedly gushed that he acted more like an assistant coach than player. I think he’ll act as a very good ‘bridge’ between Still and the players, plus I reckon he’s had very good prior exposure to the style of play Still expects.

Yes it’s a problem.   I see Newcastle want to buy Trafford from Burnley

This is where I feel football has changed so much, even in the last 2-3 years.

In the past you could get promoted with the core of a good side, enjoy that team in the PL and evolve with them (Brentford, Brighton, ourselves, you guys, Leeds etc). Some good players may get sold after season 1 in the prem, but you've survived at that point and can reinvest from a stronger position.

These days it seems like an impossible cycle. As soon as teams get promoted, they're already struggling to keep their best players. Burnley lost some of their best players last time they came up, so did Sheffield United. Burnley will probably repeat the same feat here, and thus the inevitable will happen.

It would be nice for these promoted sides to get a chance to get a foot in the league. If their best players are sold before they've even started, it's an uphill battle really.

On the coaching staff and speculation about his brothers...

"I had the last word to say yes to these. I've always worked well working with different people.

"I think I need feedback and if something's not right, then I need people to tell me that something's not right. Trolls has got the experience. He knows what it takes to get out of this league and be competitive.

"Adam has got that experience of a player, he's won everything there is to win. He's incredibly eager to learn and to be in and around the place so that's brilliant. Carl's still here and he's got great skills working with the players.

"I worked with my brothers last season, which was brilliant, but their family reasons kept them in Belgium - close to their newly born children.

"That's fine. But like I said, when I took over in Reims, it was a fully new staff to me. When I took over in Belgium, it was a fully new staff then.

"I'm used to it, it takes me out of my comfort zone and sets me on the right foot so it's interesting. The first week here has confirmed that it's good."

Just a moment ago played the start of The Damned United with Clough putting the boot into Revie on air, and the reaction of the players to his arrival. 🙂

Key points

  • Right time to come home and take this job
  • Hopes to be here for a long time, but football is football
  • Being a young manager does not cause a bother at all
  • Club aim to go back up this year, we are a big club with a good history
  • but all understand that a reset is needed and there are many good teams in the league
  • Squad is big, and strong, will need to be trimmed
  • There is a Will Still style
  • we will press, be proactive, be front footed
  • we need to play forward early and not keep possession for possession sake
  • we need characters, and the key is to win...regularly
  • We will have to have a philosophy and all that, but ultimately we have to win and win regularly
  • I want the players to be normal. No weird behaviours, no massive egos
  • Staff meeting was all about just being normal
  • Championship is incredibly demanding, and all the staff are important
  • all should feel good to be in the club, and all should take opportunities to switch off

Whilst I don't want to return to the heady days of Martin's empty platitudes it's hard not to be traumatised by last season. If anything it was far more traumatising than the Hassenhutl, Jones and Selles relegation simply because we were being told every work how the process was working.

Trying to sugarcoat that we were fucking shit top to bottom also wouldn't be a good start. So he had to find a polite way of conveying that without alienating too many people.

Still don't get how someone can relegate us and then walk into the rangers job..... He did get us up in the first place so we have to be greatful for that but it was clear from the beginning Martin wasn't going to work in the premier league everyone knew it but the club it seems

Who cares, we don't have to pay him anymore and he's been exiled to Scotland.  Enjoy it!

Because as shit as we were last season, Glasgow Rangers is a step down in income, budget and squad quality from us.

The Rangers forums remain hilariously deluded about this however. Silly, uncompetitive league imo. Russ will fit right in.

I see our third kit has been leaked ahead of our Amazon Prime series, Pirates of the Solent, as we try to capture that Wrexham Hollywood buzz.
