Liam Delap, THB, Downes were all relatively big money signings the year we went down last time albeit they were loans with options to buy. We almost bought Piroe last time out and he would have been a big money buy. Yeah I could see us going for the loan to buy kinda options, although to be honest THB and downes didn’t really workout that much better then we already had once we got promoted . my main point was signing a big money signing in the championship will not get you the same quality as it would in the premiership take ramsdale for example we could go out and spend a equal amount but a player like him wouldn’t come so it’s not as good value for money .. we have to be careful not to just buy more championship players that won’t make the step up to all those who are calling to sell off pretty much everyone, we went into the premiership with a good championship squad doesn’t really make much sense to now ditch everyone when they are back in the league they are good in ? I agree but I could see us spending say 10-15 million on a top drawer championship player. If you're in the prem you'll probably be spending that amount multiple times on most of the squad. 1

Walcott definitely featured under him though. Yeah it was Mansfield. I went to that game, and the lineup was essentially most of the U21s plus Neil McCann. It's no surprise we lost. 1

gio1saints Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago (edited) Great interview in the Daily Echo. First time I’ve ever heard one of our players quoted as saying “ I want to win every fucking tackle”. This guy is going to be the heartbeat of the Saints renaissance! Got winner DNA. Superstar material. “Quarshie Smashie” needs to be a feature on here - how many opponents can he smash this season ( or put more correctly how many tackles he wins) Depends on if he plays but I’m going overall for 1.5 players per match get Quarshie smashed. Players QS’d can be put in a special Championship smashed Hall of Fame. Spreadex are quoting 35-40 smashes for the season which is bit mingy and you should buy imo as I’d say nearer 60 cos I think he will play a lot, smash a lot. 😁🙏 Edited 16 hours ago by gio1saints 1

Pretty much what I warned RM and JS of last season but failed to monetise that knowledge. The number of shirt pulls- which has become our signature yellow card - we will be receiving this season plus JQ Smashie and Flynn “give me a yellow” Downes in the team means I shall be keeping a close eye on card spreads all season- looking to buy if priced incorrectly (imo of course). 1
gio1saints Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago “Smashie” has got a nice ring to it. Can see me giving that some airtime at SMS if he scores or indeed, smashes somebody. If Bree can get an element of grunting BREE guttural noise sounds to emit from the stands when he touches the ball I’m sure “Smashie, Smashie “ ad infinitum has got a hope. Reminds of marvel comics Hulks slogan : “ Hulk Smash” or “hulk smash puny humans!” Can’t wait. Probably going to be more fun than the actual football by miles.
goodymatt Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago You do you @gio1saints, think I’ll just stick to ‘Quarshie’ or ‘Joshua’. It is an encouraging interview, saying the right things and has the raw attributes we were missing. Will be interesting to see how many minutes he gets this season, we have A LOT of options at present. 1 1

sockeye Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago (edited) If he's got pace and power, could be a good option to bring on as a sub to inject a bit of energy into the side in the closing minutes of the game and reduce the risk of conceding due to tired legs and minds (which would probably be exacerbated in a high press system), which is something that has happened too often with Saints. It will be interesting to see whether any one refers to him as that “big black bloke”, given the descriptor doing the rounds on the Women’s Football thread. A lot depends on who stays. If THB does, then he, Edward’s, Wood and the Captain may restrict his time. You get the feeling though, that as the season goes on, he might become one of the first (CBs) picked.

That's definitely the role I see for him, at least initially. With THB gone, we will probably have the four centre backs competing for the two places unless we play five at the back or play Edwards at RB.
gio1saints Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago I’m more proactive than that. Quarshie looks the sort of player that will exhaust the opposition who just keep rebounding off him and coming goff second best in foot races tackles headers and general physicality. Given the number of physical cf ‘s we will face in the championship he’s perfect IMO to start as long as he’s got a wise head covering him and around the flanks. We should play to his strengths not hide them on the bench.

I'm not sure Woods- who has performed well in preseason- our captain or the QPR 2025 player of the season are going to be too thrilled if they are relegated to the bench for the majority of the season.
trousers Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago Anyone know if Quarshie has ever played in a defensive midfield role? With his attributes, I could see him being decent in such a position. 1

gio1saints Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago Interesting ideas on how to use his qualities. He could be a “ front sweeper” but I think best use of him is as the first contact player. Designated hard man. And let others in the team pick up the debris and distribute.

Edwards got young player of the year for QPR with Jimmy Dunne picking up player of the year. Sorry, that's a bit pedantic of me. Have to be honest, I don't see Edwards fitting in particularly well into a Still side - he's not very quick, he's not very tall and he's not that aggressive either. Seems to have made his name as a ball playing CB which is fine but I'm not sure he's all that when it comes to defending.

I haven't seen enough of him yet to make a judgement but he's certainly highly rated by people who have seen more of him than me.

I dunno, young player of the year isn't necessarily that great an achievement although QPR fans did seem to rate him. I haven't seen too much either but did make a point to watch the QPR Burnley game where they got spanked 5-0 and he got subbed off. He really wasn't impressive and seems far too passive to me. Still likes a high line and to compress the play and that doesn't appear to be his game. He looks to be one of those CBs that gets a lot of praise for being relatively composed on the ball whilst everyone ignores that he's not that good at actually defending. You can make similar arguments for Baz being very good with the ball at his feet but not so great when it comes to shot stopping. Who knows though? Hopefully he's great and I'll happily apologise. 2

We’ve got Pompey amongst others in not very long and I’m not having lack of bite in the tackle anymore. We’ve had a too-long spell where Southampton are too posh to push to paraphrase - where we believed our football was so superior we don’t need or have to revert to the working man’s stuff. Well - we were mistaken and if that carries on early doors this season all hell will break loose. Saints this season ARE allowed to lose - occasionally and rarely - but are not allowed to be outfought, or outthought, period. Not after what we endured last year. Was it MC or MLT said we need earn the right to play our football? We’ve had too many matches sending out an overentitled unfit team unprepared to do whatever is required to win and too focused on fragile tikataka forgetting the basics. Quarshie has already committed. I already know there’s some likely to duck out or who are simply mentally and physiologically not up for it because if theres full blooded challenges coming in - which I expect with a “ welcome back to the Championship” tag on it - there’s some of our players won’t like it and some will love it. I want the ones that love it get up and give it back with interest plus goals. They the ones I want to be playing all the time for us (in between suspensions 🤣) I know, I know, I should have saved this for half time at Wrexham but f&ck it I’m doing the speech now. 🤣😁
spyinthesky Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Commitment is great but it needs to be displayed in the right manner not too agressive which leads to a plethora of yellow and red cards.
